guraf··on Disabled at 22 million commits
Testing git, which was a stated goal, could have been done locally.

It's obvious that the author is lying about that part, he only wanted to push GitHub to its limit, but he did say git:

> I decided to see how many commits GitHub (and git) could take before acting kind of wonky. At ~19 million commits (and counting) to master: it’s wonky.

guraf··on Apollo is dead. Long live Apollo
Apollo had just over ONE million users. Only 540k of whom were active. And significantly less that paid the fee needed to be able to post.

And most active according to whom? People keep saying Reddit is committing suicide. Do y'all truly believe that most of Reddit useful content was created on mobile? In Apollo? The app that forced you to pay if you wanted to submit content to Reddit?

Get real.

guraf··on ThinMachine – A $25 thin client macOS Time Machine appliance
There is, it's called File History and it's built in. I think it's been available since Vista.

Like TM you need an external or network drive to use it. Unlike TM it's not very intuitive and Microsoft doesn't do much to advertise it.

guraf··on NASA’s Mars Sample Return has a new price tag–and it’s colossal
An offshore drilling platform costs about 250M to build and deploy.

It is not funded by tax payers and it starts paying for itself after a few years (they extract $250,000 worth of oil per day on average, up to double that).

I don't understand your comparison?

guraf··on Real-time messaging
> Wonder how scalable the code base really is.

Are you for real? This isn't an hypothetical codebase. This is slack, used by millions of people.

I get it, they're using boring tech, but come on.

guraf··on Russian intelligence calls for Wagner chief’s arrest
It's been posted a dozen times already today

https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=last24h&page=0&prefix=fals...

So much for being "hacker" news.

guraf··on Reddit admins are removing posts containing the phrase “F–- spez”
I could understand the outrage if someone typed a long thought out comment and just signed "sincerely, fuck spez" as a mild protest and it got removed.

But that's not what's happening. The removed comments were just a variation of "fuck spez", sometimes with a pun. Just look at the comments on this very thread, just chains of "fuck spez". It's childish and very annoying, it is literally spam and if the mods refuse to treat it as such then I'm all for admin intervention.

And yet somehow he always looks like he's slowly dying of a serious disease.
guraf··on New study suggests that lab-grown meat produces up to 25 times more CO2
You're probably right, but a closer analysis that includes externalities will likely be dismissed as being too inconvenient to the narrative.

Just look at ethanol. Several studies now show that it's actually much worse for the environment than fossil fuel. But very few people care (plants are natural!!!1) or know about it. Even the government ignores its own studies and keep pushing for more subsidies and higher ethanol content.

guraf··on Eating microwave popcorn increases the level of PFAS in body (2022)
From the other stuff in the url I'm pretty sure OP just copied the link from an ad to Amazon, not created their own affiliate link (which would be crass but par for the course in the techbro hustle we live in I guess)
guraf··on Western Digital NAS drives flash ‘warning’ after 3 years even if nothing’s wrong
The alert isn't raised by traditional SMART, it's done by WDDA [1] and my understanding is that it's not controlled by Synology.

You could still blame Synology for supporting WDDA, if you really wanted to shift blame I guess.

guraf··on Why is everyone suddenly neurodivergent?
Most of what you said is true but I think what version_five was getting at is that many people who claim to be neurodivergent nowadays do it because it's trendy.

Yes, it's incredibly offensive and people who are actually on the spectrum do suffer. But I think he might be right, that people claim to be autistic or have ADHD without formal diagnosis because it's trendy. It's the modern version of "omg I'm so ocd".

guraf··on I don't trust Signal
> The NSA thing is the only thing I didn't check out

You might want to check again because your post is full of inaccuracies. From signal being on f-droid to their backend being relevant to security, you got almost everything wrong.

guraf··on I don't trust Signal
Wikipedia also has employed developers.
guraf··on Reddit CEO says app founders who are shutting down in protest made millions
They made millions by showing their ads instead of Reddit's.

Shutting them down will bring back most users (get real, not many will quit altogether) to the official app and will be served Reddit's ads, so Reddit will get the money.

How exactly is it not going to work in Reddit's favor?

guraf··on BlackCat claims they hacked Reddit and will leak the data
Barely anyone will be affected.

Redditors are being used as pawns by the third party devs in their fight to maintain their free loading existence. Which was easy, social media is good at riling up people for made up reasons.

Reddit has several hundred million users, and even more anonymous visitors. The two biggest third party apps have 1.5M users combined.

guraf··on Update from Lemmy after the Reddit blackout
> third-party apps users (and old.reddit's[1] ones) also tend to be the most prolific users

Can you give a source for that? I see this claim repeated but upon examination it seems to be a complete lie. Happy to be proven wrong.

guraf··on Apple subreddit reopens after moderation team threatened with removal
The mods are reopening because they don't want to lose their powers.

They know that if Reddit found new mods, the users probably wouldn't notice or care.

guraf··on Ask HN: Recommendations for a New Domain Registrar?
Namecheap is known to drop "problematic" users without notice and their website is filled with dark patterns.

I was banned with no explanation around the time they banned all Russians customers. I have no ties with the country but I have a Russia first name so I have to wonder...

I have no idea why people keep recommending them around here.

guraf··on Guide to Finding Lemmy Communities (Subreddits)
> Took me less than an hour to register and get comfortable with Lemmy.

Do you really not see the problem? For Lemmy to face any hope of becoming mainstream your statement should be "less than 5 minutes".

Maybe that barrier to entry is a pro to you, and that's fair, but surely you understand the criticism that a social network should be usable without reading a guide, yes?

guraf··on Executable Examples in Go
The secret is D's existence.
guraf··on Reddit bans subreddit detailing how to move to competitor Kbin
I don't think you are wrong per se, I've seen first hand that dismissal or even censorship of FBI crime stats.

But even though the data is truthful and I wish we could discuss it, it's hard to deny that the goal of the poster is usually to legitimize hate and after a few heated discussions the mods learn to recognize it as a red flag and they act early.

I know, it sounds like a slippery slope fallacy. But we've seen how platforms turn out when it's allowed. Eg voat or gab.

guraf··on Ask HN: Is it time to resurrect a Usenet clone?
Yeah you can easily host a phpbb or vbulletin or whatever still exists these days on a single dedicated server (ovh or hetzner) and be able to serve 100k MAU for about 50-75 USD/month.

Hell, for less than 10k MAU you can still get away with shared hosting if you're really strapped for cash, 5-7 bucks per month.

People around here really lost perspective of what can be accomplished with a dedicated box and a PHP forum.

You don't need kubernetes to handle 12 AWS instances in 3 regions, with S3 storage and distributed RDS with a side dish of lambdas to run your 45 microservices.

guraf··on Clearing 500k feral cats from New York’s streets
I imagine TNR also provides convenient subjects for veterinary interns learning surgery.
guraf··on Clearing 500k feral cats from New York’s streets
> Zero cats should be allowed to exist in NA?

Zero non neutered cat should be allowed to exist in North America, correct.

guraf··on ArchiveTeam has saved over 11.2B Reddit links
I have read the linked post and they seem to be only saving links, possibly titles, but not comments or text posts?

Reddit's value is in the discussions (the links are usually shared on all social platforms, so that's the only differentiator).

So what value is there in a collection of links going back years (meaning most of them are likely already broken)?

guraf··on Vivaldi on Android bypasses restrictions to let users access Bing Chat
I know CloudFlare is an increasingly popular bogeyman but that's like blaming the Linux kernel for dropping your request to a website after its owner added a rule to block your IP...

CloudFlare does tell users of their services how their different levels of protection will impact their visitors. The site owners CHOOSE to add those barriers. CloudFlare didn't force them, they're perfectly happy being a mostly passive CDN if that's what the website owner wants.

guraf··on Reddit temporarily ban subreddit and user advertising rival platform
Discussed yesterday https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=36215914

Turns out the user was spamming. Shocking, I know.

guraf··on Apple removes $99 dev account requirement for first iOS 17 and macOS 14 betas
Serious question: why or how does a developer in a developing nation end up selecting macos as a platform? And after that deliberate choice of hardware why do we assume they couldn't afford the $99?
