guraf··on Jaw-Dropping News: Boeing and Lockheed Just Matched SpaceX's Prices
Maybe this kind of delusional thinking is why he's no longer at NASA...
guraf··on Moderna's mRNA cancer vaccine works better than thought
Ridiculing people who are worried about long term effects of something that has been in use for only a few years is such an HN thing.

There's countless precedent for things once touted as being safe to turn out incredibly damaging. We just don't know the long term effect yet. Please spare me with the "but there's no mechanism for it to do harm!!!!!" the same was said for all the other drugs that ended up causing cancer or malformed babies and were only pulled from the market after decades of "nutjobs" being dismissed for suggesting a link.

guraf··on FreeBasic
> there were no functions and subroutines, just line numbers and goto. No while, no fors. Just ifs

Your memory is a little hazy because the ZX Spectrum had both subroutines and for loops (I believe all Sinclair machines did).

guraf··on Pitivi – Free video editor with a beautiful and intuitive user interface
> "Stability" is lacking in video editors because none are written in Rust.

And yet, somehow, all the pro editors manage to be fairly stable despite being written in C++ (or maybe obj-c in the case of final cut pro and iMovie)

Maybe you should do some introspection as to why that is, instead of blaming the language used.

PS: blender's NLE is possibly the most stable of the open-source ones and it's written in C. Maybe that's a hint? Maybe the answer is good leadership and high quality contributors?

guraf··on Fairphone 5: Keeping it 10/10?
What does 4+2 GB mean? I tried googling Redmi 4+2 GB but it only returns Redmi 4 from 2017 that has only 2GB of ram. Surely that's not what you're talking about?
guraf··on Korean Smartphones Have Mandatory Shutter Sounds, 8 in 10 Want It Muted
> while unnecessarily degrading user experience across society?

Does a shutter sound really degrades the experience unless you were indeed trying to take a stealth photo?

guraf··on People with autism less likely to succumb to bystander effect, research finds
This has nothing to do with the article. He's just showing his poor lack of conversational skills, typical of the condition that makes him "superior".
guraf··on Adblock Plus and (a little) more
When wahnfrieden receives ad-free video from YouTube, it is another form of welfare "freeloading". An adblocker is indifferent from a handout except by name.
guraf··on Adblock Plus and (a little) more
What are you talking about? The vast majority of people would rather disable their adblocker on YouTube then subscribe and pay $15 a month... How is it a dark pattern for YouTube to suggest the most likely option?
guraf··on Adblock Plus and (a little) more
YouTube ruined the web by... Providing a free platform to host videos open to everybody? By allowing video creators to be paid?
guraf··on Replit permanently moves to paid hosting after 7 years of free service
Your own quote says 10GB from replit vs 1,000GB from digital ocean.

So, assuming your own quote is correct, DO is indeed way cheaper for anything that is more than a toy.

guraf··on One game, by one man, on six platforms: The good, the bad and the ugly
They've been at it for over 40 years and grew to the most valuable company in the world. In many computer fields they still are THE platform (anything design for example) so clearly the software they do have is plenty.

Can you elaborate what you mean by shooting themselves in the foot?

Do you see them as a centipede who sacrificed one foot in exchange for all the riches in the world?

Or do you mean that if they were more open to developers they'd somehow be even bigger? What's bigger than a trillion dollar company? Would they be intergalactic?

guraf··on Scrollbars are becoming a problem
> With the page up and page down keys, mostly,

There is NO way that most people used page up down rather than drag the scrollbar in the late 90s.

guraf··on Show HN: I got tired of reading "This posting has been deleted by its author"
It doesn't share your cookies, that probably stops almost any leak. Then probably rules to filter out legacy ?sessid= ?sID=.

Other than that I imagine it leaks things like /bank/account/id/75795 but the crawler will drop it when it returns a 40X.

guraf··on Tell HN: "Ad blockers are not allowed on YouTube”
You're right, YouTube ads are notorious for being JavaScript heavy and served by a third party.
guraf··on Show HN: Use an old tablet as an extra monitor
Someone asks for a webpage and not only do you propose tmux, you also acknowledge it doesn't even do anything like what's asked.

Typical Linux user.

guraf··on Microsoft might want to be making Windows 12 a subscription OS, suggests leak
I'm sure you're making a clever joke and I'm just not getting it.

All Windows branded as NT as well as 2000 (the first NT not branded as such) predate Windows 8 by over a decade, so I don't understand why you'd think one of them would be number 9.

guraf··on VeraCrypt: Free open-source disk encryption for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux
We're not taking issue with you calling it a fork, which it is. We're taking issue with you calling it an HOSTILE fork, which it isn't.
guraf··on My Lobotomy: Howard Dully's Journey (2005)
Electro convulsive therapy is still routinely performed when pharmaceutical options have been exhausted, and damaging the brain is the intent.

I went through a few rounds myself in modern day America where we pride ourselves in not being barbarians. The first time I did not even consent, my spouse did it for me (in the 80s). To this day I never fully recovered. And yet if I complain people will just point to "studies" that say it works. Guess what, such studies also existed for lobotomy.

guraf··on Some Pixel owners still can't dial 911 during an emergency
If what you said was true, we'd see the same poor quality in Samsung or Apple phones. Yet we don't.
guraf··on Some Pixel owners still can't dial 911 during an emergency
In any other field, engineers would be held responsible and after so many "mistakes" they would lose their license.

Software engineers will fight tooth and nails to keep their privilege is being called engineers whilst having none of the responsibility when it comes to the harm they're causing.

guraf··on Drinking diet sodas daily during pregnancy linked to autism in male offspring
You wrote a very long and passionate love letter to the European process and how it's almost perfect.

And yet all those chemicals are allowed in Europe.

So what happened? Were they grandfathered in?

guraf··on The Philips Hue ecosystem is collapsing
I understand not fully trusting docker, you have to trust several levels of kernel features and configuration, plus it shits all over your firewall like it owns the place.

Real virtualization is a bit more airtight, though. There have been some escape exploits but they all abused drivers that you wouldn't use heedless (shared folders, VGA, PCIe passthrough), not the virtualization layer. But that's a distinction without a different, really, so good on you for being careful!

guraf··on Workers who cut countertops are dying of silicosis
Alcohol is not only heavily taxed in Canada, but most provinces also have a monopoly on selling spirits. That's right, the gov is selling the booze, pocketing both the tax and the profits.
guraf··on Workers who cut countertops are dying of silicosis
Canada will have imported over 1M immigrants in 2023 (for their population of only 40M!). Newsflash: most aren't white.
guraf··on Gene-Engineered Mouth Bacteria
The average American probably spends about 20k in their lifetime, that's probably where they got their pricing from. They get a check-up a year and a handful of fillings with some prosthetics if they live long enough. Which totals to around 20k.

The average American also cannot afford 20k in one shot they can't even afford 2k.

guraf··on Gene-Engineered Mouth Bacteria
There's a lot more nuance to the GDPR. It's perfectly possible to use cookies and not need a banner. Our industry's use of banners is just a passive aggressive reaction to being told to respect our users.
guraf··on Google will retire Gmail’s Basic HTML view in January 2024
Proton literally never worked without JavaScript, so I'm not sure why you're getting on your high horse here...
guraf··on Google will retire Gmail’s Basic HTML view in January 2024
Android nowadays only ships with Gmail app. It can do generic IMAP but it's never been clear to me if the process is entirely on-device. I'd rather not keep Google in the loop.

That said there are some generic mail clients for Android. Not many are good, but they're out there. K-9 has recently received some love again.

guraf··on Google will retire Gmail’s Basic HTML view in January 2024
Why? All platforms (both desktop and mobile) come with IMAP clients. You just need to punch your password in and off you go...
