gumbo··on Meritocracy at Scale
Now the burden is on you to provide the many examples of such a company that has been reshaped to the image of those minorities?
gumbo··on Show HN: Side Quest – An aggregator for not full-time tech jobs
The toggles filters are driving me nuts, as it stands, it unclear what the checked state is. One would assume that when the "handle" is on the right side, however, the color coding suggest otherwise. Congrats on your launch.
gumbo··on Is revenue model more important than culture?
Just candid feedback here, I think you are being downvoted because your comment is actually quite hard to digest. And here, not event blaming it on the parentheses.
gumbo··on Tech firms face growing resentment of parent employees during Covid-19
Here is the problem of U.S. news. Journalism has turned I to a contest for attention. How is it relevant to report on one (or even few) employees posting something?
gumbo··on 5G Just Got Weird
Can we change the title. As is, it’s just click bait.
gumbo··on What It’s Like to Report on Facebook
What is misleading. I just read the article again and these 3 messages captures the gist of the conversation quite well.
gumbo··on CERN approves plans for a $23B, 62-mile long super-collider
You mean ~500 million.
gumbo··on Fed to inject $1.5T to prevent ‘unusual disruptions’ in markets
Got it thanks. Still, any data on how long a typical repo loans is?
gumbo··on Fed to inject $1.5T to prevent ‘unusual disruptions’ in markets
I suspect that it won’t be too long until the Fed starts to buy stock the same way the BoJ has been buying stock for nearly 30 years.
gumbo··on Fed to inject $1.5T to prevent ‘unusual disruptions’ in markets
Genuine question here. Any data on the typical duration of these loans? How long typically the Fed holds collateral?

I remember 2 years ago the market throwing a tantrum because of the fed unwinding it balance sheet. Doesn’t that mean that typical loans are never repaid and the Fed just let the bonds mature?

gumbo··on Every Adult in Hong Kong to Get Cash Handout of $1,284
I would be curious to know how this helicopter money policy could affect inflation assuming the Covid-19 outbreak causes a bigger than anticipated supply-side shock.
gumbo··on Jeffrey Epstein: Financier 'found dead in cell' in New York
This NYT article hints at what it looks like to be under suicide watch: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/10/nyregion/jeffrey-epstein-...
gumbo··on U.S. Designates China as Currency Manipulator
This would increase wealth inequality because it’s mostly well-off Americans that own financial assets.

Look at the wealth inequality increase since 2008. It can mostly be attributed to federal reserve QE policy.

gumbo··on World hunger not going down and obesity still growing – UN report
What would you describe as your expectation of what should and should not belong to HN?
gumbo··on World hunger not going down and obesity still growing – UN report
This... the them and us dichotomy is really telling.

There are different lenses through which to view the world: a collaborative one.

Someone could also say something similar with regard to pollution, where it’s not the poor countries that are posing today an extension threat to the world.

Senior Engineer, soon to be ex-Googler looking for a new job that offers a remote working arrangement for someone living outside the US.

I have 12 years experience under my belt:

1) Funded my own company and lead it to an exit, not a big one, but a profitable one nonetheless.

2) Worked for a couple of years for start-ups in the Bay area as an early employee and grew successful engineering teams.

3) Joined Google 3 years ago on one of the 1+ billion users product.

I am now looking to join a team either as a Senior Software Engineer or a Senior SRE/DevOps. The right fit for me would be a lean engineering team that values meaningful work and meaningful relationships.

I have worked and solved some very hard problems over the years and am very autonomous. If this sounds like something you are looking for, please reach out. I am currently in the US, but if all goes well, I'll be making a move in 2 weeks.

gumbo··on Show HN: Building computer labs in schools in Africa
It is great to see such initiative.

I have a very similar experience as your and can clearly relate . Somehow, I am also working on something similar with other folks, with a specific focus on Guinea (https://www.guineapromise.org/programs/mobile-lab).

One thing that we are realizing is that the scale of the work to be done is such that we have decided to shift our objective to be an inspirational one. We advocate, lobby and inspire schools, local governments to build science labs.

Is your focus mainly with computer labs, or are you interested in general purpose science labs?

This is very cool framework and I will certainly use it for small to medium sized apps or website. However, just going through the doc there doesn’t seems to be a way to split components since any file is assumed to be a page. Any way around that?

Lastly, it’s a shame that the doc link points to github. The doc, as layed out in github is a perfect use case for zero.

gumbo··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (February 2019)
I already have a day job but have enough free time to be able to work additional hours during the week. So basically trying to complement my income to be able to support my sister through college.

gumbo··on Tesla racing series: Electric cars get the green light – Roadshow
I almost thought for a second that it would be an all self-driving Tesla race. How cool would that be! I personally would trust way more self driving cars when they reach that level of awesomeness. Not to say that I wouldn’t happily for self-driving car immediately.

gumbo··on Afrostream is shutting down
As an african from the diaspora I couldn't agree more. I think that one reason they did not succeed is that the people really sensible to the shows they had actually live in Africa instead of in the Diaspora. I know a lot of people in my country that do not watch anymore any movies from the US or from Bollywood. While my friends that are in the diaspora enjoy mainly watching popular shows or movies. The majority of people that did not go to school or cannot read or understand english don't relate to your typical american movie. It is just too far from their reality. We are all citizen of the world, but it is very difficult for the vast majority of africans to relate to movies about american's daily life or politics. Their reality is simply very different.

IMO Afrostream targeted the wrong audience. Now, one can argue that it would be a very hard sell $12 subscription to the audience that would have consumed it. That's just too much money for a lot of people.

gumbo··on Exactly-once Semantics: How Kafka Does it
The reasons this is "currently" impossible are: - We cannot build communication infrastructures that are 100% reliable - We build apps that actually crash.

I would not venture as far as to say this is impossible. If one day we are able to leverage quantum entanglement phenomenon in telecommunications network this would certainly be very much possible.
