gubbrora··on Differences between the word2vec paper and its implementation
Yes it's common that a lot of "little details" are left out. Yes it does make things harder. No it's not a big enough problem that you need to be disheartened. You could even see it as an opportunity to raise the bar and stand out positively.
gubbrora··on The prison inside: Japan's hikikomori lack relationships, not physical spaces
One of the big incel complaints is that the least attractive women don't want the least attractive men. If that is indeed true there is none for them to settle for.
gubbrora··on The prison inside: Japan's hikikomori lack relationships, not physical spaces
What do you want them to do? Better themselves - Are they not already trying? Accept they were born unattractive - then what, suicide?
gubbrora··on Open-Source `Great Satan’ No More, Microsoft Wins over Skeptics
Microsoft hasn't gotten better. But other companies are now even worse. People used to be scared Microsoft would lock our devices down so we could only run approved software.

Guess what Apple and to a lesser extent Google did that.

Microsoft tried to move in that direction with the windows store, but they didn't go as far.

Microsoft has worsened on privacy but less so than others.

Microsoft has moved more things to the cloud where we can't see the binaries we run but less so than others.

gubbrora··on Millennials ‘Make Farming Sexy’ in Africa, Where Tilling Soil Once Meant Shame
That article is heavy on how "the other" is talking about this, but light on facts about the situation on the ground.

Here is an article about the farm attacks https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/africa/south-africa...

gubbrora··on Communal Harm-Reduction Norms
I think people are rationally not stepping in, as those who do step in don't get recognition. They do however risk getting a lot of flak for having been insensitive or whatever.
gubbrora··on More evidence that autism is linked to gut bacteria
Replying to you since this is the top response but aimed at y'all really.

At the risk of stating the obvious. Gut bacteria are bacteria... in the gut. Like if you tell me they affect the absorption of nutrients - I can see that. Maybe they make something more bioavailable or maybe they break something else down. If you tell me their involved in deficiencies and over/underweight that kinda makes sense.

Tell me they affect appetite through manipulating our signals ok. Not as obvious but not implausible either.

Tell me they cause highly complex behavioral differences... it just seems implausible. But maybe gaba can indeed explain it.

gubbrora··on More evidence that autism is linked to gut bacteria
Are we at the peak of the hype cycle for gut bacteria now?
gubbrora··on Gab will become a Mastodon fork
All the big sites face government pressure to censor. In addition anyone inside these companies that would support free speech has to walk on eggshells not to be fired for creating an unsafe environment - again the government's hand this time indirect.

Imagine the conversation: this is fake news, we should remove it. No it isn't fake. You're making me feel unsafe, ill have the government put you in a cage.

gubbrora··on Gab will become a Mastodon fork
You understated 2. Its more correctly described as hatred.

You inverted 3. I said majority of white people support Trump, not majority of Trump supporters are white.

Finally you are overstating my conclusion. Here I refer to to the majority rather then all.

gubbrora··on Gab will become a Mastodon fork
I agree. But it means the majority of Y are bad and should be punished. Things don't look too bright for Y on average.
gubbrora··on Switch from Chrome to Firefox
Firefox leaves a lot to be desired, but is still miles better than Chrome.
gubbrora··on Gab will become a Mastodon fork
I see two propositions

1. Trump supporters are fascist.

2. Fascists should be sabotaged at every turn.

If we link this up with the fact that the majority of white Americans are Trump supporters, it's hard to escape the conclusion that people are basically calling for persecution of white people.

gubbrora··on Terry Pratchett warns Bill Gates about fake news (1995)
I think they were both kinda right. What Gates didn't foresee was the extent to which trust became centralized and how that created a need to keep the authorities in check and how keeping them in check enabled fake news.
gubbrora··on Half of US stock fund assets are now invested in index funds
You can save that same amount by buying stock yourself (subject to availability in your account, I guess some retirement accounts offer only funds)
gubbrora··on Can law firms be liable for fake reviews? Pennsylvania firm says no
That sounds like such a strange situation to be in. Did you find your self holding back to compensate for the incompetence?
gubbrora··on H.264 is magic (2016)
Is it possible to (ab)use that hardware support to do other tasks by mapping them to a decoding task?
gubbrora··on These may be the first images of dogs, and they’re wearing leashes (2017)
Could it be an artistic liberty to emphasise how manly he is or something?
gubbrora··on Maker of US border's license-plate scanning tech ransacked by hacker
It all depends on the goal right? In this case it seems the goal was to harm the company because they didn't pay ransom. Not to perform long term espionage.
gubbrora··on Millennials and Gen Z Increasingly Pessimistic About Their Lives, Survey Finds
I'm pessimistic about my life because it seems increasingly likely I'll never marry.
gubbrora··on “It’s hard to take risks if you don’t have a safety net”
Here is a crazy thought I had. If you're poor and save a bit money you get less aid. So saving is meaningless. You are stuck in a feedback loop. But if you buy lottery tickets as a way of "savings", you either lose and get full aid, or you win big to achieve poverty escape velocity.

I'm not saying this is true for all poor people, but I wonder if it could be true for some.

gubbrora··on U.S. put nuclear waste under a dome on a Pacific island. Now it’s cracking open
People trust centralized power because there is no viable alternative to trusting the centralized power and hoping for the best.
gubbrora··on U.S. Judge Orders “Immediate Removal” of Website Critical of Voice Lie Detector
> This is just like an engineer saying "I could replicate this product in in a weekend"

It takes a year to prepare for doing something in a weekend. But if you already have the right experience for free because you did adjacent tasks, some seemingly complicated tasks can be done real quick.

gubbrora··on Using Rust to Scale Elixir for 11M Concurrent Users
> large sorted sets

Surprised to see no mention of trees which are basically the standard datastructure for this.

gubbrora··on New Game: Minecraft Earth
Wordmarked i could see this happen
gubbrora··on An old artifact kept in a vault outside Paris is no longer the standard kilogram
The real wtf is that we had a unitless unit, ie a number whose value changes over time with some reference object.
gubbrora··on Black – Uncompromising Python code formatter
I initially used autopep8 and had set vscode to autoformat region on paste. When I changed to black I started getting error messages about region format not supported everytime I pasted.

As I mainly use other languages, with formatters with working region support, I went back to autopep8 so I could leave it format region enabled.

gubbrora··on Dave had “fuck you, pay me” programming skills
I think you all are missing a key element of the story. Dave was a cool dude. People liked him. He didn't take shit, but he didn't abuse his leverage or go on power trips.

And that's part of why he got away with things.

Also according to the story he did spread his knowledge rather than jealously guarding it

gubbrora··on Don Norman on how design fails older consumers
A lot of things that are actually used are used rarely. Maybe I will use that phone eventually. Optimization should take rare/casual usage into account.
gubbrora··on Sweden reopens Assange rape investigation, to seek extradition
Maybe he did it maybe he didn't. I'm leaning towards he did it. But it's worth keeping in mind that his punishment would have been less severe than the time he has spent in that embassy.

I think that proves that he was scared shitless.
