gschizas··on Show HN: VS Code extension to edit the filesystem like a text buffer
I have high 2 digits of extensions in my VS Code, and yours is the only one that wouldn't have a verified publisher. And I certainly have more than one from solo developers.

Qt organization (because you mentioned it) also has verification. It displays a different message (because I haven't installed anything from them):

> The extension Qt Core is published by Qt Group. This is the first extension you're installing from this publisher.

> Qt Group has verified ownership of qt.io.

> Visual Studio Code has no control over the behavior of third-party extensions, including how they manage your personal data. Proceed only if you trust the publisher.

EDIT: I'm sure there are other extensions that are also by unverified publishers. It was the first time I was hit with that message though.

There's a syntax error in line 10 (t0 instead of to).

Also, what's the source for this program? I tried it on VICE and failed miserably. Maybe something (else) was copied wrong? Or is it supposed to fail on emulators?

This looks cool, but I'm a bit wary of publishers that aren't verified.

> Do you trust the publisher "Ali Mostafavi"?

> The extension voil is published by Ali Mostafavi. This is the first extension > you're installing from this publisher.

> Ali Mostafavi is not verified.

> Visual Studio Code has no control over the behavior of third-party extensions, including how they manage your personal data. Proceed only if you trust the publisher.

rye is also written in Rust and it's being replaced by uv.

From its homepage: https://rye.astral.sh/

> If you're getting started with Rye, consider uv, the successor project from the same maintainers.

> While Rye is actively maintained, uv offers a more stable and feature-complete experience, and is the recommended choice for new projects.

This doesn't seem to work at all for me, but I don't see any error messages in the console or anything... I just see a dark gray screen with an (i) on the top left (with the instructions), but nothing seems to have any effect (left or right clicking, using the scroll wheel or dragging the mouse with left or right click) don't seem to have any effect. The only effect I'm seeing is right clicking on the page shows a "[CLIENT TRIGGER] Right-click at (123.456, 789.012)" message in the console log.

I can see that there's some traffic (for example, I see some WSS on socket.io, and some XHR for /state, /clients, /checksum) but it doesn't seem to change anything on the screen.

gschizas··on I Miss Visual Basic
Modern VB.NET (and C#) suffer from overcomplication, from trying to do too much. And at the same time, not doing enough.

There are (at least) three ways to make a desktop application (Classic Windows Forms, XAML and other, more different XAML, for what used to be Metro/Windows Store apps). Not all functionality overlaps between them.

There are a plethora of (paid) custom controls which reimplement the wheel for all of those (because Microsoft didn't bundle in some elementary Windows controls)

That being said, I personally miss LightSwitch.

gschizas··on Redis is open source again
Oh, don't get me wrong, I don't distrust them, it's just that some projects that come out of Microsoft Research are more rough around the edges!
gschizas··on Redis is open source again
Nice. I've been using Memurai (https://www.memurai.com/) for development on Windows (native, no WSL or Docker - for reasons), but this looks much better.

EDIT: Weird that being a program from Microsoft (well, it's Microsoft Research, so that probably explains it?) it has no installer and doesn't run as a service on its own.

> Sure, but does not XML have the exact same problem because everything is just a text?

No, you can specify what type an attribute (or element) is in the XSD (for example, xs:dateTime or xs:date). And there is only one way to specify a date in XML, and it's ISO8601. Of course JSON schema does exist, but it's mostly an afterthought.

gschizas··on ACARS Drama
Thanks - I wish I could find the video I watched. I think it had the information in that article, but in a more digestible format.
gschizas··on ACARS Drama
That's mostly a myth.

I've seen a YouTube video in the last couple of years that explained the true origins of the QWERTY keyboard. Originally, the keyboard was alphabetical and arranged two rows, based on a piano keyboard, the black keys went A-N left to right, and the white keys went O-Z, right to left. Then it got shortened in width and the letters got folded over (this is why at the right edge of the middle row you have HJKL and the bottom row has MN reversed as NM).

I'm not 100% sure this was the video I saw, but it has some of the points: https://youtu.be/c8f6us-Sjlo

The point is that even if you choose to display all file extensions, the extensions "lnk", "pif", "url" and a few more are never shown.

Search in your registry for "NeverShowExt".

In my PC I found the following:

*.accountpicture-ms, *.appcontent-ms, *.appref-ms, *.desklink, *.library-ms, *.lnk, *.mapimail, *.mydocs *.pif, *.scf, *.search-ms, *.searchConnector-ms, *.settingcontent-ms, *.URL, *.website, *.zfsendtotarget

gschizas··on How to change your settings to make yourself less valuable to Meta
There's indeed a middle ground now, as far as I can tell. It's called "show less personalized ads" or something like that, but in effect I think it's showing ads related just to the page you're currently looking at. I'm perfectly fine with this model, and I'd rather we collectively go back to it, instead of ad trackers following you around on the Internet and serving you ads based on your browser history instead.

Of course that doesn't mean I trust Meta/Facebook/Instagram/Whatsapp, but at least on the surface it seems they understood the assignment.

Interesting. With a few exceptions (namely, BS/HT/LF/VT), these are identical on what the Amstrad CPC character set (https://archive.org/details/SOFT968TheAmstrad6128FirmwareMan...) looks like. Which was probably a copy from some other character set ROM.
