There are a number of these offices in NYC and I'm sure there are some in other cities as well. I hope you find somebody that works for you.
It's really the complete opposite case, I think. For the value (time is money!) they offer, it's amazing they haven't increased their prices as they scale.
I don't find myself often venturing to uptown Manhattan, Williamsburg, or anywhere in Queens. My fiancee and I live in Bay Ridge, some family members live in the West Village, and most of our friends live Southern/"Middle" Brooklyn – Park Slope, Bed Stuy, etc.
THAT SAID: The more wholesome amenities available in Bay Ridge blow away most everything else available in Brooklyn (notable exceptions are only Park Slope, BoCoCa, Williamsburg proper). Considering the price, a bargain of a neighborhood. Dining/Drinking-wise, the neighborhood itself is going through a small revolution. Good stuff happening. Super livable area.
Coming from Philadelphia, where I lived in a 2BR HOUSE with a yard and all the amenities for $400/mo less, there was some sticker shock. But when you get to it, there's a lot more opportunity, a lot more options, a lot more of...everything. New York is about "a lot". That's what you pay for.
People seem to be unwilling to explore neighborhoods outside of a 20-minute ride to down/midtown hotspots, which reasonably cost considerably more. If you can stomach an extra 10-20m on the subway you can find very livable rents in good neighborhoods.
As an American, it's best to understand this.
However, the "official" mobile version of 2048 - which this blog post is specifically promoting - was created with full knowledge of Threes!.
You already had the gift of recognition, even for something that wasn't truly your own creation. Did it need to be milked further, or could you have moved on and created another game, riding your reputation? That's a big "if", but it would have been the right thing to do.
In my case, I was looking for a space with people I could interact with and get to know and be comfortable and happy around ('coworkers', natch). The looming death of the space totally killed any potential for that to happen. That's why I consider the time/money a waste.
Lesson: ask how "healthy" the space is when you're "interviewing" the space.
Along that same vein, I'm very partial to the community-focused angle that Indy Hall in Philadelphia has taken: http://www.indyhall.org/

RTO+P is a full-service ad shop based in Philadelphia. Last month, we won Ad Age's "Small Agency of the Year (11-75 Employees)" award. We serve clients like Under Armour, NBC Universal, Planet Fitness and more. From a tech standpoint: we focus on the speed and quality of our work, and embrace bleeding-edge techniques and philosophies wherever we can.
We're looking for: Tech Lead, Lead/senior Rails engineer, Senior front-end developer, and more. We're approaching hiring with a "smart people first, skills second" mindset, so get at us. Agency experience is not required.
Philly people: Welcome to your new favorite place to be. The office in Philly is rad beyond description - built into the former penthouse apartment of John Wanamaker, directly next to Philly's City Hall, and loaded with more quirk and haberdash than you'll likely ever be able to fully observe. This is the beating heart of our agency. We've got an impressively sized (and growing) tech team and we're working on creating and building the best god-damned websites, apps, and experiments the world's ever seen. Seeking all positions.
Brooklyn/NYC people: This summer we opened a tech-focused outpost in DUMBO, Brooklyn. We're still building the BK team and are seeking developers, product people, and tech-centric designers. A small amount of travel can be expected, mainly to Philadelphia every few weeks (costs fully covered).
LA people: We just opened a killer office in Venice. We're looking to fill this office out as a mini-agency within the agency, capable of both full autonomy and working as part of the larger agency machine. Seeking all positions.
Please contact me at interactivejobs@redtettemer.com - attach your resume (required) and anything else to impress (code samples, portfolio, side project link, etc.).

Brooklyn positions: We operate a small development outpost in DUMBO, Brooklyn - currently just yours truly and a few open desks waiting to be coded upon. From Brooklyn, you'll also be a part of a larger - but still small - organization of intensely creative pros. Some travel, mainly to Philadelphia, every couple weeks, should be expected (with costs fully covered, of course).

I think Medium is great. As is mentioned in the article, the editor is fantastic in its minimalism.
A key difference between myself and the author of this post is that I have no interest in creating or maintaining a blog (proper) of my own; I just want to write. I've wanted to write for a while, too, but the roadblock of setting something up and getting it looking decent prevented me from moving forward. For a while I thought Tumblr had been what I was looking for but text-based posts become utterly lost in the stream of naked ladies and pixel art (or is that just me?).
Stats wise, it's interesting to hear what an "Editor's Choice" pick on Medium can result in. I've got several posts on Medium that have 100 or fewer reads and they were posted to correct "collections". Which shows that Medium is not the place to build up an audience that you don't already have. Lacking the ability to "follow" an author – on-site at least, RSS is a non-advertised option – shows that Medium is more oriented towards "real time" (news cycle) longform than being a platform for authorship (for everyone besides maybe @ev and a handful of SV folks that always get featured).
My most popular article was posted about two weeks ago and has had around 2,000 reads. This isn't due to any Medium feature, though - just good old retweets and viral spreading. It was a satire listicle - prime viral material. Probably not what Medium was made for. Getting all of those reads, though, made me wonder exactly where all the traffic was coming from. I wish Medium had more in-depth analytics for this.

In the case of ST2, it was pretty damn solid out of the box. There's tremendous power in the customization, but it's in no way required.
Seeking senior-level developers to form the foundation of a new NYC-based development team for an established ad agency
RT+P is a full-service advertising agency that's had great success recently developing large-scale web applications for our clients (Under Armour, Planet Fitness, and others). We're known for our bravado and our aim to always overdeliver on our client's expectations. Right now we're working on establishing a development-centric New York City office. The NY office will focus primarily on long-term "product" projects.
We're seeking one or two experienced Rails and/or JS developers. You'll be working directly with yours truly. We're going to make some seriously killer stuff.
Full-time salary with a great benefits package. You'll be instrumental in creating the office itself - we're starting with a blank slate. Occasional (every couple weeks, if that) travel to HQ in Philadelphia will be required. We are not a start-up, full compensation is not a concern.

EDIT: Here's the mention of "4X" dynos - in the "FAQ". https://blog.heroku.com/archives/2013/4/5/2x-dynos-beta
Our apps (Rails) tend not to be incredibly hogging, so we've been running 8-9 Unicorn workers per dyno, depending on the app, up from 4, and it's worked fantastically. With one app, we were able to scale down from 12 to 6 dynos, which helps with the routing mesh "issue" that begins to really present itself with that many dynos.
Per aculver's post, I'll have to take a look at Adept Scale - it sounds killer.
This kind of sadly smacks of someone putting too much credence towards the myth that you need a degree to get hired. Or worse, the kind of person who believes that a degree entitles you to a job.
Also,
> In late 2010, I closed shop on my business, sold off every bit of music equipment I had, and sold off all of my possessions, except for my Xbox 360. I moved in with my sister and decided I needed to start over. With all of my free time, I managed to pick up Battlefield 3 on release (I was already playing Bad Company 2, and played the BF3 Beta to level cap). I would play it about eight hours a day, and eventually saw that I was ranked 3,338 on the Xbox leaderboards. I then made the decision to try and get back into the gaming industry.
Or, he quits his job and plays videogames for the majority of his day. Instead of, perhaps, writing his own scores or producing audio for an open project or a game mod to put into a portfolio (maybe he did do this, but I'm assuming not, since he sold off all of his possessions except his least useful thing - an Xbox).
This doesn't sound like a story about getting screwed over, it just sounds like he doesn't want to put (the right kind of) effort towards something he really wants.
