grimgrin··on Rust solves the problem of incomplete Kernel Linux API docs
IDK if this is bad practice but I've rolled up the messages if you wanna read this in one view:

grimgrin··on Daily Usenet Feed Size Hits 300TB
There are many things I've found on soulseek that are simply not on the public (and few private) trackers I check. I can only imagine the same applies to usenet.

similarly, soulseek is limited to 1 peer at a time, which some might consider "ill-suited to the task"

anyways I love slsk

clients exist:

grimgrin··on Newpipe/yt-dlp stops working
Working fine here, and I didn't even have to update (and haven't in weeks). Makes me wonder if:

1) --cookies-from-browser is actually doing something for me since I'm authed

2) just lucky

I see 3:2 and I think of my Framework laptop. Haven't owned it too long, and the 3:2 was entirely new to me. I love it, though it's strange

Here's xrandr for this baby, and afaik, only the main resolution is actually 3:2

grimgrin··on Show HN: I made a CLI tool to create web extensions with no build configuration
The best luck I’ve had with SPA apps and a goal of manipulating the DOM is by using mutation observers. Worth exploring if you haven’t yet

https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/MutationObs...

You can hack on the behavior via userscripts, my preferred way to alter websites, though I write extensions too (greasemoney is good tho)

grimgrin··on Picotron Is a Fantasy Workstation
If you toggle this it will automatically unload, thought I'm not sure how low memory has to get before it triggers: browser.tabs.unloadOnLowMemory

In my original comment above I wrongly assumed it _was_ on by default

grimgrin··on Picotron Is a Fantasy Workstation
i wish firefox had more granularity with its tab unloading feature. one method is restarting browser. but by default it’ll unload tabs if you’re low on memory. you can force em in about:unloads (hint- about:about if you ever forget)

i wrote a simple firefox extension that unloads em all with a button click, but it’s no different than restarting ff or spamming clicks in :unloads

grimgrin··on TextSnatcher: Copy text from images, for the Linux Desktop
In the spirit of sharing, cuz I think this is a great script (thank you), I prefer using maim over scrot simply because it has a --nodrag option. Personally feels better when making selections from a trackpad. Click once, move cursor, click again.

    maim -s --nodrag --quality=10 $IMG.png
10 is scrot's 100

grimgrin··on Why I use Firefox
Hell yes. TST got me by, it was okay.. but kinda of a mess? This is a nice alternative at first test and glance. I also like that unloaded tabs are sorta ghosted out.

Lately, on my older computer, I've been unloading a lot more? Similar to closing and reopening your browser with tab restoration (restores tabs, doesn't _load_ tabs). Or.. similar to about:unloads and clicking a button a bunch.

May as well link it here, I didn't put it on the store yet

https://github.com/shmup/firefox-tab-unloader/releases/tag/v...

This is the crux of it: https://github.com/shmup/firefox-tab-unloader/blob/main/back...

(I should point out, it unloads tabs in all windows -- this might not be a nice default but it's for me right now hehe)

grimgrin··on Why I use Firefox
A firefox thread

Lately I tell people about about:about because I had only recently learned of it. Maybe you’ll find some use there too

grimgrin··on Ant Geopolitics
I'll piggyback this sci-fi thread to link the beginning of Phase IV, because I rather like it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTv4WYHsncQ

The plot: "After a spectacular and mysterious cosmic event, ants of different species undergo rapid evolution, develop a cross-species hive mind, and build seven strange towers with geometrically perfect designs in the Arizona desert."

grimgrin··on Windsor Typeface (2018)
That is _exactly_ why people still search reddit.

This is a classic example: https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=font+review+websites+r...

Sometimes you're leaving reddit as quickly as you visited, knowing you found the sorta thread you want, and ctrl-f'ing all of the https:// to dig further.

But maybe more often I'm just going to https://hn.algolia.com/ which almost always to take me somewhere else, less so to read a buncha chatter

grimgrin··on A simple MUD server in Python which can be run on a Raspberry Pi
Earlier tonight I converted some Ankh-Morpork dollars into Lancre bucks so I could buy a tent. They recently added tents so now I can afford a "house" :P

Here's a page I threw up with a buncha Discworld MUD links, for the curious: https://badteeth.dungeon.red/

grimgrin··on A simple MUD server in Python which can be run on a Raspberry Pi
I do love muds.

I sorta maintain: https://github.com/shmup/miniboa

There's a lot of rabbit holes if you ever want to explore the social/textual landscape of the 80s and 90s, especially the 90s and into the early 2000s. A LOT of stuff was written. Recently I've been absorbing more of it

Like this: http://pmc.iath.virginia.edu/Virtual.Community.html

And also a book you may like to look up, "My Tiny Life": https://archive.org/details/mytinylifecrimep0000dibb_c6m4

Or read some papers indexed here:

Bare with me, the topic of MUDs isn't mentioned here often and I've been wanting to link dump a little

grimgrin··on Certain dogs are capable of learning the names for more than 100 different toys
I did not know what class inclusion was, but now I'm thinking it's more complex than that? After a little bit of reading. "all daisies are flowers" and not "all flowers are daisies", this example seems more like the "solid grasp" you're referring to. And not basic categorization that a 3 year old might have: "foods", "toys"
grimgrin··on ADHD linked to evolutionary success in ancient humans
Not exactly in disagreement with this concept:

> In the 21st century we may have pathologized ADHD as a negative disorder, but that could be just because these characteristics simply don’t easily suit the world we have constructed. In a different context, it is possible that someone with ADHD could be a saviour to a tribe by restlessly exploring new pastures.

grimgrin··on How to commit part of file in Git
the only reason I do some git stuff in vim and not _always_ in the shell, is because tpope is very thoughtful and fugitive.vim provides nice ways to deal with hunks or hunk partials (visually selecting a range within a hunk, for i.e.)

grimgrin··on Asciinema 3.0 will be rewritten in Rust
I think it'll cover your needs. You can configure typing speeds, send commands for backspacing, if you were driving vim you could obv record doing search/replace/deletions

The fact you can iterate at all is its appeal to me

https://github.com/charmbracelet/vhs?tab=readme-ov-file#vhs-...

grimgrin··on Asciinema 3.0 will be rewritten in Rust
now you can compare asciinema (rust) to vhs (go)

I still use and love asciinema, but will eventually check out vhs. It records terminal activity, outputs a gif, and you can publish to their[1] server.

Alternative you can feed it a "tape" file, aka a text file with a few configuration options and your ordered commands to run.

My workflow with asciinema sometimes has me cancelling out to redo w/ some minor change, so this tape concept is really attractive
