grimgrin··on FTL: A new operating system for clouds
thanks to your comment we all understood that you got it though, which is the point!

also, thanks to your comment, unaware folks will probably figure it out, which is the subtler point!

grimgrin··on Tcl/Tk 9.1
if anyone was curious! "soft spot" has an Indian English "soft corner", so says website dot com
grimgrin··on Two Git ignore files nobody told me about
this was probably discovered by many when seeking how to globally ignore agent configs, until perhaps they decided they'd like to start committing agent configs. though that's just a `git add -f`
grimgrin··on ZuckOff is a free app that sees Meta glasses before they see you
"even worse", I searched "nearby glasses" on app store, and it's 2nd, under the ad sponsored "ZuckOff"

and so I leave this comment as off topic, but, is it pretty easy to get your new app to appear in that ad slot, above the main contender?

grimgrin··on Rat and Mouse Gazette: Nursing Care (1996)
Fine but, probably post the burrito-for-rats next time

grimgrin··on Firefox 156 shows ads in the address bar (dubbed "Firefox Suggest")
as the other comment said, you can put in user.js but more specifically, that goes in the root of wherever your profile is. for me, that is:

    /home/<user>/.mozilla/firefox/<name>/user.js
this file doesn't exist by default, there's caveats with how it is overwritten, etc. i don't know much
grimgrin··on DeepSeek Harness developer preview
I didn't wanna press, but ... seeing "Responsible bot." on a ~10 month old account, it is a different signal lol

Only reason I said anything at all.

grimgrin··on DeepSeek Harness developer preview
why advertise your account as a bot? idgi

    about: Responsible bot.

grimgrin··on A shell exclamation mark is not for yelling. Be lazy
i love the mkdir example, so i’m going to exercise that muscle and see where it goes

and yeah ^r works, though i often type a few chars and ^p till i get the match. history-search-backward in your inputrc, iirc

edit: on a computer now :) my `if emacs` block, allowing arrows or ^n/^p to run through history. so for e.g., type "tar" and now as you shift through history with :binding:, it only shows history that began with "tar"

    $if mode=emacs
    "\e[A": history-search-backward
    "\e[B": history-search-forward
    "\C-p": history-search-backward
    "\C-n": history-search-forward
    ...
    $endif

I like to think this'll be around forever

grimgrin··on Show HN: I was tired of opening 2 tabs for every HN link, so I made a userscript
I love userscripts. Aren't we all using https://github.com/violentmonkey/violentmonkey now though?

thought I realize "if it works it works", https://github.com/Tampermonkey/tampermonkey

grimgrin··on Hologram Works. Sponsor What Comes Next
that's fair. probably i attached more weight to the opening line: "We're in an interesting time where my framework/stack choice is now much less dictated by existing engineer expertise and more about fundamental capabilities in the framework and stack themselves."

assuming author wouldn't choose X _just because_ it is the new hotness

grimgrin··on Hologram Works. Sponsor What Comes Next
right, you're using the tool for the job. author was reaching for reliability, re: OTP/beam. now we don't know if they actually needed it, but, you're saying the same thing to me
grimgrin··on Judge a book by its first pages
maybe it is mostly books, but the first one it served me was a /r/aita post

grimgrin··on A better way to tie gym shorts (or any drawstring) [video]
they're right, we're wrong. look, if you got XXXL shorts on a medium waist and tie an _excellent_ standard knot, and you are very active for a while? those shorts are gonna loosen up for sure

this knot rules, i'm glad i went back and tried it :)

grimgrin··on A better way to tie gym shorts (or any drawstring) [video]
I got through an entire day yesterday in massively oversized gym shorts, by simply forming a standard loop, and wrapping it _twice_. That extra friction (the second wrap) has worked for years on shoes, boots, and, very large shorts

I will not be learning a fancy knot because I have no need

grimgrin··on 1k Words: A Writing Contest
fwiw, this entire thread exists because of the ignored [2] in the link.

[2] Write 1,000 words about it by August 31st, 2026.

this is 1 of the two constraints. you may have to rework sentences. the skills exercised are these efforts

If y'all never seen Decker, it _is_ cute:

to verify, you're talking about https://prefiremagic.com/ aye?

cool, was only familiar with predh, which scryfall also filters on

grimgrin··on United Wizards of the Coast recognized by NLRB
yeah. scrolling this expansion list, you can see 2018 was really the last _block_ as we knew them: few sets labeled under a theme an author might write a book about

also shortly after we see new sets stopped getting their own wiki articles

grimgrin··on Zed 1.0
many became used to this behavior with notepad++ and though it's not cross-platform, if you never entirely left windows, you're possibly still using it. especially if it's to paste giant json blobs, as npp has a plugin system, with json formatting and the like ~

anyways, sometimes i think about npp when subline is mentioned

grimgrin··on Ghostty is leaving GitHub
github is their precious. i’ve heard it called that name before, though not by them /G
grimgrin··on I'm never buying another Kindle, and neither should you
probably because of android 11
grimgrin··on Not buying another Kindle
the only bit of the service i cared about was mailing my kindle address mobis/epubs (even the mobile kindle app receives these)

today i use a boox page, after a friend complimented his

grimgrin··on Isaac Asimov: The Last Question (1956)
okay so i'll be the sole commenter of: hex.ooo is an incredible domain name to me, maybe because i dig its UI, but certainly just in general

didn't know about ooo, maybe because it's not available on namecheap!

grimgrin··on Servo is now available on crates.io
when servo is ready i have plans to swap it into qutebrowser which ive been growing fonder of
grimgrin··on Starfling: A one-tap endless orbital slingshot game in a single HTML file
I wasn’t suggesting you open source it, for what it’s worth
grimgrin··on Starfling: A one-tap endless orbital slingshot game in a single HTML file
Publish yours un-minified like OP, so we can easily riff w/ or w/o an LLM ;)
grimgrin··on Generative art over the years
generated wallpapers are my fav

though really i just mean changing wallpapers, like https://satelliteeyes.tomtaylor.co.uk/

my thing is a collection of public city webcams from around my state, that get applied to various displays on a cron. i add noise, saturation, etc. sometimes two displays get such a wallpaper that i find the combination lovely

( this is a top/bottom setup https://i.imgur.com/Xc8RdnW.jpeg )

now, this isn't really generative. but i've imagined and toyed with it. splotches of greyscale, or flip that and only splotches of color

i've imagined embedding secrets, whatever that means
