grimborg··on Major reversal in ocean circulation detected in the Southern Ocean
It's a real danger that what is not immediately easy for non-experts to understand gets flagged with the suspicion of being "AI garbage".

If you want to understand the challenges of satellites in the Southern Ocean, there's plenty of info about it online.

https://journals.ametsoc.org/view/journals/bams/105/12/BAMS-...

(I am also non an expert, and I also didn't understand it at first. That's to be expected. The real world is complex and hard to understand.)

grimborg··on Mass producing the most expensive rice cooker [video]
What was the model of Panasonic you bought? Sounds like a good alternative to preventive marriage counseling
grimborg··on Toward a more useful keyboard
I did something similar, but I mapped it (on hold) to cmd + control + option + shift so it effectively becomes a new modifier key that I use to define shortcuts that will never clash with any existing shortcuts. I use it to launch / switch to specific apps, move windows, etc.

grimborg··on Catala Lang: DSL designed for deriving implementations from legislative texts
Why did you choose the name of an existing language (català, Catalan) for your new language?
grimborg··on My approach to taking notes in meetings
I take all my meeting notes on Agenda ( https://agenda.com/ ). It links the notes to the calendar events.
grimborg··on The Case For Better Watch Typography
And often there's so much text on the dials. Brand name, automatic, 1000ft, made in X, etc, etc. I find it extremely noisy.
grimborg··on Notion Timeline View
If the Notion timeline view had more granularity (hours and not just days), it would become a great tool to plan novel scenes! (I’m using Aeon Timeline for now, but it’s clunky and doesn’t get any updates. I’d switch to Notion in a heartbeat!)
grimborg··on Ask HN: How do you keep notes of things you learn
Notion.
grimborg··on Spain will prevent “digital republic” in Catalonia
Here's an explanation of the reasons. http://www.cataloniavotes.eu/en/background/why-a-vote/
grimborg··on ‘My Hovercraft Is Full of Eels’ in Many Languages
Mi is pretty much "my", and "mío" is close to "mine". "Mi aerodeslizador" is correct, and "El mío aerodeslizador" is as awkward as "Mine hovecraft". Source: I'm a native Spanish speaker.
grimborg··on .Cat Domain a Casualty in Catalonian Independence Crackdown
Self determination is a human right. It is not unlawful, and a referendum about it isn’t either. If a certain law doesn’t allow for it, the law is wrong.

Of course, Spain is also calling thoroughly pacific demonstrations “tumultuous” so that they can accuse politicians of sedition, so Spain clearly doesn’t care about truth and law.

grimborg··on On Password Managers
Thanks! I am so glad to see I was wrong on this!
grimborg··on On Password Managers
Why is the 1password login the same as the encryption password for all my other passwords? There is absolutely no reason why I should ever send them my encryption password. If they would make these two passwords separate and handle all encryption/decryption locally, I think that would solve the issue for me.
grimborg··on Show HN: Replacing WordPress with GitHub Issues-like Blog Comments
I'd be tempted to use Firebase as a backend instead: simple integration with the browser, built-in auth using facebook, google and others, and no need to create a github issue for each post.
grimborg··on Dropbox Wants More Access to Your Computer, and People Are Freaking Out
On Linux you can use Fuse in userland. On OSX I'm not sure.
grimborg··on Quiver: Programmer's Notebook for OS X
Ah, a Ulysses clone for developers.
grimborg··on Dear open-source maintainers, a letter from GitLab
Using gitlab for go development, "go get" doesn't work. Googled around, couldn't find a solution. With github, on the other hand, it just works.

I love gitlab (even made a git tool to easily create repositories from the commandline, gitgitlab) but these small things make a real difference. I'll end up paying for a github organization account just to get this annoyance out of the way.

grimborg··on Releasing a Commercial ASCII Roguelike, a Post-Mortem
$30 leaves it out of the impulse buy category for me.
grimborg··on Last.Backend – Visual Docker Containers Orchestration
I'd love to try it, but when signing up with github it wants to be granted access to all my organizations, which I cannot allow (I only want to grant it access to my repos, not my employer's!). Any way around this?
grimborg··on Apple App Store STATUS_CODE_ERROR causes service problems
I'm having problems every week with Ulysses' iCloud sync: syncs that won't happen, lost data... I back up my data by hand to text files just to be able to recover. It's insane how much it fails and how little visibility over what's going on it offers.
grimborg··on Watson now brings cognitive speech capabilities to developers
Most developers I work with already have quite good cognitive speech abilities...
grimborg··on What most young programmers need to learn
The Clean Coder is a good read for starting programmers. It goes beyond code to what it takes to be a software professional.

grimborg··on Show HN: Franc – Detect natural languages
Interesting!

Sometimes it gets it almost right: I tried with this piece of text in Catalan (Balear variant) and it classifies it as Portuguese (with Catalan as 2nd option): "I s'horabaixa la deixam passar i me mires tan a prop que me fa mal, que surt es sol i encara plou, que t'estim massa i massa poc, que no sé com ho hem d'arreglar, que som amics, que som amants."

It's strange, because it's pretty different from Portuguese...

The Catalan poem "tirallonga de monosíl·labs" gets classified as French. (http://www.rodamots.com/calaix.asp?text=tirallonga)

grimborg··on Show HN: Blogo - A blog editor Mac app for WordPress bloggers
It never stops loading and it crashes on me when I try to type anything. I have a self-signed certificate, maybe that is the cause? I'm running the latest version of Wordpress.
grimborg··on Show HN: I learned Rails and Objective-C in a year to build this
Beautiful!
grimborg··on Lime – Experimental Sublime Text clone
There's something wrong on the install instructions: completion can't be installed

$ go get code.google.com/p/log4go github.com/quarnster/parser github.com/quarnster/completion github.com/howeyc/fsnotify package github.com/quarnster/completion imports github.com/quarnster/completion imports github.com/quarnster/completion: no Go source files in /home/oscar/go/src/github.com/quarnster/completion $ go version go version go1.1.2 linux/amd64

How did you guys install lime?

grimborg··on Defeated
There are many international IT companies in Europe where English is the lingua franca (speaking from my experience in Catalonia and the Netherlands). Learning the language of the country is a welcome courtesy, but it is often not a requirement.
grimborg··on Valencia region government completes switch to LibreOffice
indeed!

Valencian (Valencià) is not a version of Spanish, but a different language. It's the same language that is spoken in Catalonia (and which there is called Catalan), and in the Balearic Islands (where it's called Balear).

It's amazing the amount of languages that are everywhere...

grimborg··on What to do when someone steals your startup idea - case study
Don't worry. Ideas are worthless. Implementation, marketing, etc. is what matters. Focus on that. You should be chosen because you're the best, not because you're the only one.
