greatpatton··on Pavel Durov on the TikTok Sale to U.S. company
Main reason most US company are not operating in China, is not because they are banned, but because they don't want to comply with the China rules regarding total surveillance. Apple has no problem to operate in China and providing its services there. However I have to say that I totally support the position of all the companies that refuse to operate in China because they don't want to comply with these rules.
greatpatton··on Pavel Durov on the TikTok Sale to U.S. company
It doesn't apply to China specifically. The end result is for the rest of the world to understand that operating in the US is as risky as operating in China... BTW if I was tik tok I would sell myself to a European entity.
greatpatton··on U.S. citizens no longer have access to most of the world
>How is that relevant when we were taking about people with US and Swiss citizenship?

It is relevant because if you are for instance a FR-US dual citizen (because for instance you were born in the US while your parents were working there as an expat for a few years), you can freely settle in Switzerland (CH-EU free movement agreement). In any cases you have to do your IRS stuff whatever the amount you are earning so this is already a problem and if you work in IT you salary will easily get over 100k which potentially trigger amount to pay (even with the high tax rate of CH). My colleague in front of me, was a US citizen because he was in this exact situation, and was tired of all the paperwork required by his US citizenship (and the fact that all the banks were considering him as a liability). So if you don't intend to live in the US, having a US citizenship is a problem for a lot of people, and if you have to pay for it, it becomes a burden (including all UE/CH-US dual citizen living in CH).

Anyway all of this to say that about 25% of the worldwide US renunciation are taking place in CH, so this figure alone prove that this is a problem in this country.

greatpatton··on U.S. citizens no longer have access to most of the world
A median is a median... and if you are a married couple very easily. But it is also the case if you have a EU-US dual citizenship. So in fact that's a lot of person. Also it's not that complicated to migrate to Switzerland is you are an American with a EU passport (get an Italian passport if one of your grand-parents was Italian and bingo), and that's the case of a lot of people.

In Switzerland every year between 500-700 people renounce their US citizenship... so at least a few.

greatpatton··on Brown M&Ms, or Why No One Reads the Manual
This may be possible for a theater hosting a unique event, but never for a music festival, where you have like 30-50 different artists/bands on one night. There you have people responsible for each aspect. Of course you have a stage manager responsible for the overall operation of each stage, but there is no way that a guy can make sure that everything is ok in all details for all artists (the riders sheets can sometime several pages of different requests, like that hotel room must contains this kind of pillow etc.). As you say you have to delegate, and if one of the guys of the backstage team forget to sort the M&Ms, it will be a problem for the guy in charge of the backstage, but that's it. Like in any large organization, you cannot imply that because the customer support guy messed up that all the engineering team is bad. So here, if they wanted to make sure that technical guideline where followed it would be better to put something like: please mark all this kind of cable with pink and yellow tape.
greatpatton··on Brown M&Ms, or Why No One Reads the Manual
This is quite strange, having organized a large music festival this kind of document were split among different teams. Meaning that people in charge of the backstage are managing their part (getting food, M&Ms, specific brand of beer, and other non nonsensical request, etc) and the people in charge of the stage and technical stuff are taking care of technical requirements (and aligning them between different bands sharing the same stage). So if someone from the backstage team messed up the M&Ms, it will bring absolutely no information about how the situation was handled by the guys in charge of the stage... So this canary will be quite ineffective in reality
greatpatton··on U.S. citizens no longer have access to most of the world
@learc83 it just shows that when you have a dual citizenship (US- CH or European one) the IRS issue is a real problem in a country where the median salary is just under 85k$ per year (no need to be a rich guy). The point is a US passport is great to live in the US, that's it. (personally know 3 ex US citizen that where tired to pay a US accountant when they already had to go through Swiss tax system).
greatpatton··on U.S. citizens no longer have access to most of the world
yes but Switzerland has freedom of movement with EU, meaning that EU passport holder can freely settle in CH or Swiss passport holder in EU...
greatpatton··on U.S. citizens no longer have access to most of the world
Come to live in Switzerland and then you will understand why the US embassy here has the highest US citizenship renunciation in the world...

greatpatton··on Top EU court overturns US data transfer agreement in Facebook case
I think that you are kidding yourself. US has a massive surveillance/spying program of EU citizen data, as demonstrated by the different leaks, this is not speculation but hard facts. US judiciary system with secret courts and gag order is a joke from a European point of view (Justice is rendered in the name of the people not secretly). Surveillance by EU spying agency can really rely on EU court to make them stop (and yes having worked for legal interception system in Europe, people really take into account judiciary decision), and ISP are fighting back without the threat of gag order.

BTW, I have to guess that your logic doesn't apply when the US refuse its data to go to China. Are you also saying that this is also pure US protectionism in disguise?

No it's not less dependency on 3rd parties, it's more dependency on TSMC. Before they were able to play Intel vs TSMC, it's not the case anymore. Then you add the geopolitical issue of Taiwan vs China and the risks level keep increasing.
greatpatton··on Woman makes $420k by buying insurance on flights she predicted would get delayed
Yes I do know by experience that it is very easy to deduce if a flight will be delayed. By experience in Europe, last leg of the day of an Easyjet flight -> 75% chance that your flight will be delayed. Snow during the night (look at the forecast) -> 90% your morning flight will be delayed etc. etc. No need for an advance ML model. Of course what she did was more like insider trading, but I'm pretty sure that you don't even need that.
greatpatton··on Woman makes $420k by buying insurance on flights she predicted would get delayed
You analogy is incorrect as it would mean that she would buy the insurance when the flight is officially delayed. Here she is making a prediction, which may or may not be correct. It is exactly the same as when you are buying option or contract on the stock market. Here the issue is that the insurance company has a fixed premium which not based on the likelihood of delay. This is completely on the insurance side. Otherwise the stock market will have big issue if you apply the same analogy. This new clause is in effect a blanket one to not pay anything... if you pay for an insurance you have the conviction that the flight might be delayed... otherwise there would be no point to buy it....

greatpatton··on French researcher posts successful Covid-19 chloroquine drug trial
Institut Pasteur is not the only research body in France regarding infectious diseases... They are directly linked to the Marseille University Hospital (AP-HM) and all the usual public research bodies like INSERM, CNRS.

If you want another source than connexion France, you have this article from Le Monde: https://www.lemonde.fr/sciences/article/2020/03/17/la-chloro...

Are you highly skeptical of Le Monde?

greatpatton··on On the implications of the Covid-19 WA2 genome sequence
Ok one more element for the theory that the virus is circulating undetected in many places around the world. Seems quite in line with the Italian scientist that also estimated that the virus is circulating largely in northern Italy since mid-January.
greatpatton··on Next stop, hydrogen-powered trains
I think that you can get good energy density with Hydrogen which will allow long train journey, but this will degrade further the overall efficiency as high compression of the gas is needed, and this energy is likely lost during usage.
greatpatton··on How to Respond to COVID-19
A 20% death rate is highly unlikely. The Italian researchers who sequenced the Italian strain believe that the virus has been circulating widely in Italy since January, even before Italy banned direct air flight to China. This seems to be confirmed by the fact that almost all the new cases in Europe are originating from big Italian cities. If the death rate was 20% we should start to see a lot of death in Italy and it doesn't seem to be the case. Iran and Egypt also seems to be largely hit, as many tourist back from Egypt have been infected. Now getting the real death rate is going to be a very complicated game, especially if many infected patient remain without symptom. I tend to believe the virus is already highly circulating in a high number of place of the planet where the health system is bad, and lacking testing capabilities. We are even starting to see untraceable cases in the USA.
greatpatton··on Next stop, hydrogen-powered trains
The main issue is the overall efficiency of the process. Creating hydrogen by electrolysis is about 80% and then a fuel cell electric efficiency is 60-70%. So overall the whole process is not very good.
greatpatton··on Switzerland Federal Council bans large-scale events
yes I just heard from the team that did the sequencing of the virus in Italy they now believe that the virus has been circulating there for weeks without being detected...
greatpatton··on Switzerland Federal Council bans large-scale events
Yes in Switzerland and all the new cases originated in different place of Italy. So it seems that in Switzerland when people are back from Italy and having symptoms, they look for help and are tested. But as it is very unlikely that all these people were in contact with the 650 people detected in Italy (most of them were back from Milan, Verona, and not from the lockdown cities, my fear is that Italy is facing a different order of magnitude of cases. And that's why I was interested in potential model to simulate this.
greatpatton··on Switzerland Federal Council bans large-scale events
I'm wondering currently we have 40-60 cases in other EU countries all originating in Italy, but there are only 650 official cases in Italy. Based on this, it seems that the infection is widely widespread in Italy and the number of "undetected case" should be important (maybe for instance with a lot of asymptomatic carriers) Is there any model to predict this type of dispersion? Any interesting article on this subject?
