Yes
grafelic··on The threat is comfortable drift toward not understanding what you're doing
"He shipped a product, but he didn't learn a trade." I think is the key quote from this article, and encapsulates the core problem with AI agents in any skill-based field.
grafelic··on Laptops with Stickers
My laptop hasn't had stickers since a CTO asked why mine didn't have any stickers like the ones on the laptops of his cool cloud team. Personally I've found laptop stickers bad taste since then.
grafelic··on I think I'm done thinking about GenAI for now
For me the problem with GenAI is that it erodes away what I enjoy in my job and in my free time. I enjoy learning and eventually understanding methods to solve problems. I enjoy applying these methods in my mind, before trying them on the computer. I am not interested in getting the solutions to problems served to me without understanding why it works. I feel, yes it is an emotion, that GenAI is unhealthy for the progress of mankind, since it encourages a lazy mind, stifles curiosity and will lead to inbred information filling our digital spaces.

I am looking forward to my future career as a gardener (although with a smidge of sadness) when AI has sucked out all creativity, ingeniuity and enjoyment from my field of work.

grafelic··on Ask HN: What projects do you donate to?
I donate to XMonad because it is finest of wms and the one I use.
grafelic··on Vtm: Text-Based Desktop Environment
Something like dvtm?

grafelic··on I wish I didn't miss the '90s-00s internet
I am hoping and waiting for the 80s punk equivalent anti-SoMe counterculture to appear.
grafelic··on NordArt
The best modern art museum I have ever visited.
grafelic··on Ask HN: Which movies did you watch multiple times?
The Ninth Gate (Roman Polanski), which I have seen perhaps 5 times. I think it is the hidden meaning in old books which draws me to this movie. Videodrome (David Cronenberg) and recently Midsommar (Ari Aster) plus many of the already mentioned.
grafelic··on Show HN: Resurrecting a dead Dune RTS game
Very interesting and in depth article. I really appreciate the amount of detail and knowledge shared about how to go about reverse enginnering and patching abandonware like this. Thank you. Saw the game in a local thrift store, but left it be, since I only played Dune II rts. I will pick it up for sure now.

Here are some quality photos from Denmark: https://www.dr.dk/nyheder/vejret/saa-vildt-ser-det-ud-se-nat...
grafelic··on Most of Europe is glowing pink under the aurora
I took one semi successful photo using my crappy beat-down a20e Samsung phone.

It doesn't do what we saw justice at all.

grafelic··on Most of Europe is glowing pink under the aurora
I feel I need to report my experience from Denmark, Jutland.

It started with white broad streaks, which most of all looked like fog, but then perhaps after 10 minutes or so, we saw colors of red, purple and green begin to emerge from the these streaks. Most astoundingly it all seemed to emanate from a fluctuating point in the middle of the sky. If you looked closely at this point you could see it fall into itself, morphing and shifting continuously.

We went around the house and we could purple streaks at the top and orange to red patches at the bottom of the sky.

Colors observed: Whitish blue, Green, Purple, Red, and Orange

An absolutely a beautiful experience.

grafelic··on Why the world stopped having sex
A possible contributing factor is that people, and especially young people, are drinking less alcohol than the generations prior, which is leading to stronger inhibitions, a lower frequency of one-night stands and no hangover sex.

No, I have no sources for this assumption at hand.

grafelic··on Ask HN: What are your favorite tools?
Linux, bash, awk, sed, curl and jq.
grafelic··on Ask HN: Books you read in 2023 and recommend for 2024?
The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann. This book somehow stayed with me for a long time after having finished it. For me it encapsulates how we sometimes get stuck in systems which are unhealthy, but safe and feels better than an uncertain alternative. Also how pain and suffering binds people together in interesting, and in other circumstances, unlikely relationships. I enjoyed the humour as well.

grafelic··on The persistence of prog rock (2017)
Zazu is a prime and obscure example of what I consider to be progrock (disclaimer: I am no proghead).

Especially, "Ittsanottasonatta, But It's Close" is a hidden gem of genre.

grafelic··on Ask HN: Is GitHub Down?
Yes.

Intermittently, since yesterday.

grafelic··on Ways to shoot yourself in the foot with Postgres
Check out https://www.percona.com/blog (filter for MySQL)

I have been a heavy user of the Percona distribution of MySQL for many years and highly recommend it. I think that most of the MySQL articles on percona.com are relevant for other MySQL distributions.

As a side note, depending on the software stack, ProxySQL can have a major positive impact on performance and scalability.

grafelic··on Dancing is stupid
So when I'm dancing alone, which I do occasionally, I play a game? What game is that?
grafelic··on Ask HN: I just want to have fun programming again
Write some C for your own pleasure and fun on an undead platform, like AmigaOS.

Due to the constrained nature of the undead platform there is no real possibility of decision fatigue, since the ways of solving a problem are few.

grafelic··on Setting up for X-Windows development on macOS
Yeah, X kind of works on MacOS, but the refresh/redraw rate in terminals is so bad that it is unusable for day to day work. I eventually had to stop trying and configure Iterm2 as a clunky rxvt-unicode simulacrum.

As a side note, the Xorg (XQuartz) distribution from MacPorts seemed to be more compatible with Xresources than the official XQuartz package.

I miss all aspects of Linux and I will shed a tear of joy when I can return to it on my work machine.

grafelic··on Elder Mother
Elder wood does have some uses, it is perfect for creating homemade turntable unipivot tonearms, since it grows straight, has a hollow core and is very stiff when dry.
grafelic··on Ask HN: What is the most mind expanding book(s) you have read till date?
Perhaps, read it when I was 15 years younger and haven't reread it. "Set and setting" is more important than age in some sense, age is more important than "set and setting" in some sense, and "set and setting" and age is equally important in some sense.
grafelic··on Ask HN: What is the most mind expanding book(s) you have read till date?
"The Illuminatus! Triology" by Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson.
grafelic··on Longevity of Recordable CDs, DVDs and Blu-Rays (2020)
The article linked to technical bulletin 27 "Remedies for Deteriorated or Damaged Modern Information Carriers" which linked to following publication:

https://publications.gc.ca/collections/collection_2016/pch/C...

which contains remedy descriptions for damaged optical dics.

I have had some success removing surface scratches with very fine sandpaper and buffering wheel on a drill press.

grafelic··on Ask HN: What is your default font for coding and terminal?
Dina Font, always Dina Font https://www.dcmembers.com/jibsen/download/61/
grafelic··on HelloInbox – Ultimate email deliverability checklist and toolkit
Some feedback:

"Helloinbox" should have an option to specify a DKIM selector.

It is not correct to only check for a "default" DKIM selector, since any other selector is just as valid as "default", which in turn means the guide should also be updated to reflect this.
