grae_QED··on People who use Notion to plan their whole lives
I've been using plain text for over 10 years. It's simple to use, easy to modify, has as complex of a tag system as I would like, and will be around until heat death. Why fix what ain't broke.
grae_QED··on The Modos Paper Monitor
Instead of e-ink displays, I wish companies would try to make strides in transflective lcds [0]. If more companies invested the time and resources, I think that the potential cost savings and technological benefits (such as a higher refresh rate and no ghosting) over e-ink would make a killing.

Right now, I only know of one commercial product [1] currently being made that is taking advantage of this untapped market.

grae_QED··on Top Digital Calipers for Machinists (2021)
You know what has the same, and even sometimes better, precision, requires no batteries, lasts a life time, and is usually a lot cheaper? Classic analog vernier slide calipers. You really don't need anything that fancy the get some exceptionally precise measurements.
grae_QED··on Ploopy open source thumb trackball
> Regarding their PCB design (visible on the bottom of the page, with additional details here [1], could someone explain why the optic part is separated from the rest of the board by a long, wavy connection?

I think the pcb has to be slightly bent to accommodate the angled position of the track ball. Making it like that helps alleviate stresses on the pcb.

grae_QED··on Why do you waste so much time on the internet?
Talk to a licensed therapist with a PhD or PsyD that specializes in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). There are masters level therapist, however most of them don't have as much training as people with PhD's or PsyD's (it can be hit or miss with masters level clinicians). But really it's about finding someone that you can connect with.

CBT focuses on challenging behavior that goes against your goals and building an arsenal of cognitive tools to maintain behavior that helps you achieve your goals.

It's what most people with these kinds of problems need.

grae_QED··on The next Google
-$5 or less a month -simple web interface -accurate results -privacy oriented -NO ADS

That's all I want from a search engine. I don't care about shopping or maps or any of the other 'features' all of these alternative are trying to implement. I want a gnu style search engine. I want something that "does one thing, and does it well," and I want that one thing to be 'search.'

grae_QED··on Mourning loss as a remote team
Not to diminish the seriousness of this post but I'm a little curious why this site is named 'so fucking agile'. If it's just for shits and gigs then it would have been great if they called it 'sofa king agile'.

Just found my new libreboot background. Thanks for sharing!
grae_QED··on Linux from Scratch
No, it has a point.
grae_QED··on Make Linux look like Windows 95
Very cool! I've actually been looking for something like this recently
grae_QED··on Atari asks for help finding developer of 2600 game Aquaventure
I get some serious astroturfing vibes from this post
grae_QED··on Thank You, Valve
At this point, Valve has yet to disappoint me. Even their failures, like the Steam Controller, were amazing pieces of tech. The Steam Deck is no exception. It's exactly what I've been wanting: a SFFPC that doubles as a portable gaming console with Linux natively installed. Bravo Steam!
grae_QED··on You can now send replies from your Duck Addresses
I think the coolest part for me is that now I know duck.com redirects to DuckDuckGo.
grae_QED··on Alder Lake Core i9 processor is faster than the M1 Max
Even if it is faster than the M1, I'm done with Intel. The M1 is fast enough for my uses and there needs to be more disruption within the consumer chip market. I've been using ThinkPads with Intel CPU's for at least 15 years. My next laptop will be something with an M1 or better.
grae_QED··on Ask HN: Favorite Podcast Episode of 2021?
I have two: Darknet Diaries episode 92 on the pirate bay and the Huberman Lab episode 22 on hypertrophy.
grae_QED··on Receiving Starlink Beacons with a HackRF Supercluster
I love how whenever I read about radio stuff I feel like I'm reading something from r/VXJunkies.
grae_QED··on Why Are Topre Keyboards So Expensive?

grae_QED··on SerenityOS demo at Handmade Seattle 2021 [video]
Thanks for sharing your project! The passion you put into It definitely shows! Serenity OS looks amazing, and your projects paradigm's align with some of my own for general purpose software.

If I wasn't so locked into my own software ecosystem, and I had time to dabble with a new OS, I would absolutely try yours out. For the time being, I'll subscribe to your YouTube channel.

grae_QED··on Porting Doom to a USB Bluetooth Dongle
hah! no, but, real or not, that's hilarious!
grae_QED··on Porting Doom to a USB Bluetooth Dongle
At this rate, I wouldn't be surprised if some one ported doom to their electric toothbrush.
grae_QED··on I'm “still afraid to use spaces in file names” years old
I've never had any problems with this. At this point, it's second nature for me to either use underscores for spaces, or camel caps if there aren't any single character words like 'i' or 'a' in my desired file name.
grae_QED··on Making the dislike count private across YouTube
I understand the incentives, however, I think the biggest consequence of this is that it will give a false sense of support on conspiratorial videos and other forms of misinformation.

Some people think that the more likes a video has, the more the community agrees with it's message, and therefore the more truth the video contains. The classic appeal to the majority fallacy.

This is only going to strengthen those communities and empower them further.

grae_QED··on Pinterest ruined photo search on the internet
Have you ever felt a similar frustration outlined in the article? Specifically Pinterest image result clutter?
grae_QED··on Suspected head of $21B crime syndicate may be world’s most innovative drug lord
Wow, what a fascinating article. It still blows my mind that annually his organization made seven times more than the Sinaloa Cartel. I think the last paragraph says it all:

>What gave traditional organized crime its strength in the past—the violence, the control of territory, the ethnic loyalty and defined hierarchies—are the heart of its weakness in the present. Tse had a better system. Instead of ethnic loyalty, transnational and inter-organizational co-operation. Instead of territory, logistics. Instead of hierarchy, metrics. Instead of centralized control, connections. Tse Chi Lop is easily the most significant criminal in Toronto’s history, and he represents, in an entirely diseased way, a perverse triumph of the city. His vast criminal organization flourished through open-mindedness and entrepreneurship, by creating markets and exploiting them in a spirit of eager globalization and cosmopolitanism.

Imagine how much money criminal syndicates could make if they took notes from this guy and all worked together.

grae_QED··on Should a dog's sniff be enough to convict a person for murder?
Fun fact: The Stasi had a scent library[0]. They would regularly use dogs to identify and arrest people.

grae_QED··on Facebook Renames to Meta
The whole "Metaverse" thing reads like E. M. Forster's, The Machine Stops.

Now we'll never need to leave our houses. All thanks to Facebo... Uh, Meta.

grae_QED··on Ask HN: Best way to host a website for 500 years?
Download your website, engrave it on a quartz crystal[0], and hope your progeny have something to read the data from. If you want something that will last ~30 years, then tape and tape drives are a good way to go.

When it comes to web hosting, archive.org maybe? Who knows if they'll exist in 500 years. But in terms of publically accessible webpages from generations past, they seem reliable to me.
