gostsamo··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
dessert and wine sorts are different. Also, people eat much less grapes than they drink, though some could be turned into raisins, but it is again not that much.
gostsamo··on Welcome to the Medical Clinic at the Interplanetary Relay Station
Looks like commentary on the US healthcare system.
gostsamo··on San Francisco Onion Futures Company
A guy cornered the market in the fifties, caused a scandal, they made a special exception.
gostsamo··on EU chief opens door for Canada to become 'associate member'
funnily, they already have a trade agreement, though not fully ratified.
gostsamo··on Self hosted email continues to steeply decline
Hosting my own server with mailinabox. low traffic, but keeping their random subscriptions, newsletters and occasional single purpose address. Haven't had any issues so far.
gostsamo··on If I own Claude's outputs why can't I train my own model on them?
There must be a clear difference between terms of the Anthropic service and the legal standing of the ai output. The output is mine and I'll do with it whatever I want. The service is Anthropic's and they can do business with whoever they want. Everything else is hallucination.
gostsamo··on What's the best programming language for coding agents?
I added pyright hooks to any edit commands in the code base and it works very well to keep it in the rails. Only trick is to set the unused import as a warning due to the way it edits files. Generally, type checks really help with getting the ai outside of its window vision when doing partial edits in the files.
gostsamo··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
Yandex also moved outside of Russia and there only one vendor.

Kagi is not russian. The founder is from Serbia and the company is american.

PS: I hope not many people are the type to see a slavic name and conclude Russia.

gostsamo··on Why Wall Street is ignoring big tech's debt [video]
A bit of napkin math.

How many are the white collar workers? 300 mln? even with $100 subscription each, the monthly revenue for your addressable market rises to $30 bln. If we increase the figure to half of humanity and they are 3 bn, you multiply it upto 10 and $300 bn monthly, $3.5 tn annually.

Now start cutting it down keeping in mind that not everyone is an office worker, does not need $100 plan, has access to cheaper models, could get ai through someone elses subscription or local models. I'm not sure how down it will get, but it can get down a lot and will have to be split among few players. At least for me it does not seem unrealistic that the revenue won't be enough for everyone.

gostsamo··on Crime Pays but Botany Doesn't
Well, it wasn't universally popular is my point.
gostsamo··on Crime Pays but Botany Doesn't
Christian Europe waited until the XIII-XIV to get most of its latin inheritance in latin. Before that it was either greek or arabic.
gostsamo··on Crime Pays but Botany Doesn't
In XVIII there was no language that could be universal was my point and latin was known mainly through its derivatives.
gostsamo··on Crime Pays but Botany Doesn't
Because latin was common only for part of one continent where he happened to be and not to the rest of the world while english happens to be spoken all over the globe due to a big goofy empire that went places.

However, let's keep out the culture wars from a post mainly about plants.

gostsamo··on TIME Is Serving AI Bots a Different Website, with Ads Built In
The same things your bot reads are saved as material for training in the future by your provider, so this seems as an attempt to poison the training data. Just this weekend had a dinner with someone who insisted that part of his business is to seo promote business in chatbots and this looks as part of the infrastructure behind such efforts.
gostsamo··on The US is not a democracy but an oligarchy, study concludes (2014)
The research covered policies from 1981 to 2002.
gostsamo··on Tailscale didn't stop the Hugging Face intrusion
Humble bragging turned to marketing. Respect for the spin. Not using them, but been on my radar for some time and thinking of how to make something like that usable in my setup.
gostsamo··on Modern email can be built from borrowed parts
Mistakes happen.

Thanks for the change.

Unfortunately, stopped reading at one moment, because though the idea might be interesting, the packaging was unbearable. The obnoxious real time visitors counter seriously screws with my screen reader. I don't care how many people are reading this every 3 seconds updated not only with numbers, but with randomly chosen emois in my speech stream.

If you have a website, please, don't subject your visitors to something like that.

gostsamo··on Count Binface
There were but decided not to stand candidates, likely fearing humiliating defeat.
gostsamo··on Building relationships with customers through support didn't turn out as hoped
I've been in a similar position. This is a transactional relationship with hard boundaries and it is good not to look for more in it. The best strategy is to be fast, professional, and to funnel them in a way where they can help themselves. Publishing roadmap and providing community forum for support works for some and others just cannot be helped. Live with that and carry on. No human connection will make them pay ten time the money, so just being responsive and reliable will make you the goto provider for the particular need.

Maybe if your product would get more valuable if you were connecting users together and you were moderator of the community, it would've been different, but it is quite different product to sell.

gostsamo··on The bottleneck might be the air in the room
requires that everyone is comfortable walking and has no physical impairments.

Not to talk about the weather either.

gostsamo··on I Fired Google
BMW actually piloted such a program, but the outcry was brutal.
gostsamo··on MiMo Code is now released and open-source
Do you know the old anecdote about the russian and american scientists talking about freedom? The one where the american explains that he is free to go and protest against the war in Vietnam and where the russian dismisses him that he is also free to protest against the war in Vietnam.
gostsamo··on Spanish traders set the standard for GnuCash database design
Your title promises a story about the spanish traders. It does not deliver, but talks about 3 other different topics that I'm not interested in and jumping between them to test my nerves. If it is about the architecture of whatever you are doing, put the architecture in the title and don't make your title an offhand comment somewhere there. Fucked up clickbite.
gostsamo··on Spanish traders set the standard for GnuCash database design
A true surprise if so, but still low in informational density and annoying to read.
gostsamo··on Spanish traders set the standard for GnuCash database design
Feels ai generated and waste of time to read even though the topic could be interesting.
gostsamo··on Ultra-processed foods in the global food system: The role of tobacco companies
There is a nice old comedy called "Thank You for Smoking". Worth watching if you haven't.
gostsamo··on Samurai City
Fascinating. Currently imagining a futuristic version of that and mixing it with some cyberpunk happening under the shadow of the big brother.
