goodlinks··on Backlog size is inversely proportional to how often we talk to customers
Vote = vote * employee.grade

(/S this isnt actually a good idea but may be practical depending on the org)

goodlinks··on Octopus vs. Underwater Maze [video]
Would good if posts youtube worked like twitter one where you got to see the channel name.. i absolutely hate mark rober and hope he fails and dissapears from youtube
goodlinks··on Nespresso Pods [video]
Enjoyed watching quite a few of this guys videos after watching this one. Thanks.
goodlinks··on Why British chocolate tastes the way it does
I know its irrelevant, but i am curious - which bit? Hate for cadburys, tolerance of hershey or love for lidl? Or just the whole worldview :)?
goodlinks··on Report Phone Spam – Shut down robocallers and text spammers
Imho the normalisation of agressive advertising and inhuman communication with customers is what make spamming profitable.. they are not that different from legit orgs.
goodlinks··on Voters Overwhelmingly Pass Car Right to Repair Law in Maine
This could still work, just not have data.

Something can be functional but useless

Edit, or rather.. functional but unused

goodlinks··on Voters Overwhelmingly Pass Car Right to Repair Law in Maine
Can you give an example of a function of a car that should need a network connection.

E.g. navigation. Could still work but say cannot load maps. And it could let you download maps to a usb stick if it was actually decent.

goodlinks··on Sad clown paradox
Arent most people who chose to be in the public eye messed up?

Comedians do a job that allows for more exposure of it.

The broader brushes plausably cover the data for me.

goodlinks··on Home Assistant 2023.11
I love HA and will persist with it. Main complaint is that it (and more so its docker containers) want access to the things that are not documented or configurable.

E.g. it tries to contact DNS other than the configured one and i cannot figure out what exactly it needs access to to allow updates to work.

This is especially important for home automation tools as i want them as far from the internet as possible

goodlinks··on Why the Apple phone will fail, and fail badly (2006)
3g and wifi hotspot were another two big ones (edit: that made me stick with the somewhat ridiculous htc/windows i was using) iirc

*edit: i say ridiculous as the iphone still made it look totally crap

goodlinks··on We always end up with waterfall
Agreed. Software development and basically all efficiency / process improvements are not really top down at all.

I just think that anything not top down doesnt play nice with shareholders. Also doesnt play nice with management that want to say they are the ones that got something delivired.

Seeing projects get rejected as they delivier too much of an improvement (e.g. we only predicted 5% savings this is likely to give 40%) really opened my eyes to how important it is to appear like you are more in control than you are.

On the skunkworks suggestion, i was meaning dont put anything from that team into any forecasts until you have a better measure of the impact.that way you controlthe narative better.

goodlinks··on We always end up with waterfall
There needs to be a stable narrative to shareholders, anything within your control should be managed.

Moving all software development into some kind of skunkworks part of the business with 0 expected returns and only ever discussing roll outs may be one way to do it. (Shrug)

Its why i think innovation is maybe a bit easier at a privately held or government owned org. They can look at the value more directly rather than through share value impact.

This response is just about how big a deal the shareholder perspectove is, if you can fly under that radar then you stillneed to convince everyone else that you can be trusted to deliver eventually.

goodlinks··on Get The TLDR Of Any YouTube Video
Some counter points..

1. Do it open source. Upload raw footage and notes, let others edit add graphics etc.

2. Make less videos, there is clearly too much youtube content in general. Topic/points not raised or covered by you will be by someone one day

3. Optimise for 0 edit etc. Come up with a format that requires less editing etc.

4. Go for a commissioning model instead. Kickstart/gofundme or similar each video individually based on the idea. Or wait for whales to stump up for topics they want covered that you like

5. Make money from merch or paid appearances or personal messages. Merch doesnt need to be so corny. I would pay for "seasons" of youtube from creators i like. Especially if it was personally prepared (e.g. usb stick with hand written note in the mail). Encoded how you want and ready for upload into jellyfin or similar.

Making money out of IP/content is fraught with issues, imho anything not just made out of sheer desire for that thing to exist is a compromise that will hopefully be eventually replaced by something better that was made for the love.

To be clear if you are making a living from youtube or similar more power to you, the world is far from perfect and there are way worse things you could be doing.. but on the consumer end i feel i owe you nothing other than thanks and respect (which are heavuly waited to you not qasting my time).

goodlinks··on Rules for developers to design beautiful UIs without a designer
I hold out hope that when the tool is in a market that delivers actual value functionality and usability still tend to win out.

I think that a lot of software is inherently low (or even negative) value and thats why shiny wins.

Could easily be dreaming tho

goodlinks··on Tesla removes parking sensors, the results are predictably terrible
Mercedes-Benz Cars reports 520,100 global car sales during the third quarter of 2022.. according to some random site.

I know that the vast majority of merc sales were not EVs but i think they are making enough to know hows its done.

Vertical integration seems tesla main moat.

goodlinks··on Judge decides against Internet Archive
I didnt say children were perfect or formed model societies, i said IP was nothing like human rights or democracy.

When you experienced bullies etc. did you not have someone you could talk to that would agree the person was being shitty?

the idea that you can own an idea is not something that has an obvious link to basic issues that arise from existance of people, humam rights and democracy are.

Just because some people are shitty doesnt mean we should lower the bar.

There are some reasons for IP but they should not derive from owning an idea.

goodlinks··on Judge decides against Internet Archive
Seems you are arguing a against something i didnt say?

I guess you must believe you have some special ideas that you didnt get from anyone else at all, not based on any of you experiences and conversations with others that we all should pay you to use or refine (or even just repeat). And that you think it right to force these kinds of delusions on your children to stop them growing up stupid and naive?

goodlinks··on Judge decides against Internet Archive
Imho Its a really good book, i think the first novel written by a non-noble, or something like that.

Its over 100 years old but still very relevant today. Understanding how things have not changed in that time was powerful in helping me form opinions on what should change.

Edit: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ragged-Trousered_Philant...

goodlinks··on Judge decides against Internet Archive
Have you read the ragged trousered phillanthropists?
goodlinks··on Judge decides against Internet Archive
Human rights and democracy are nothing like IP.

Dont be shitty to people and listen to their voice are thing that any group of children playing may come up with them selves.

Those same children will copy each other and build on ideas each other have.

Thi child who demands no one can play a game or any derivative because they came up with it first, well, they are just not very nice.

goodlinks··on Switzerland bans deferred bonuses for Credit Suisse staff
Ive only signed a couple of contacts ever, where the company really wanted it and were not forgetting.

I may be wrong but the offer letter is enough to insist your first paycheck and from there on in its obvious the company thinks you are an employee therefor subject to all employment law, most of which is about not changing the staus quo without due process. E.g. In the EU holiday pay cannot be lower than the previous 13 wk average doesnt matter what your contract says.

Employment law as far as i have seen in the UK (thanks to the EU) is all you are ever going to get anyway in any tight situation. Anything else in a contract is likely only gling to be an attempt to reduce that liability (which then in turn often invalidates the whole thing anyways).

goodlinks··on Consider Phlebas Published by the Folio Society
Sad i dont have more of his books signed. I did go to a signing, but the only books of his i had to hand were from the library.. so i got them signed and didnt say anything when i returned them incase i was charged for damaging the book.

He just chuckled and did the dedication to the library directly.

goodlinks··on ChatGPT broke the EU plan to regulate AI
Google has gotten worse since it was created.. chat gpt is the first thing since that even has a hint of value.

Ornganisations with more focus on making money than social responsibility are not a net positive.

So i struggle to see any innovation from outside of europe to balance your claim.

Maybe windows, but linux was started in europe..

Shrug.

goodlinks··on Signal says it'll shut down in UK if Online Safety Bill approved
The uks main export is corruption.

It keeps its populus under educated and feeds them hate and tales of past glory.

Its an embarrasment.

The democracy is just another element of that fantasy world they project. With first past the post democracy cannot be a goal.
