goguy··on A phishing attack involving g.co, Google's URL shortener
I do this for any inbound call, unless the caller id is someone in my contacts it can go to voicemail. If it's important they either leave a voicemail or keep trying, for repeated calls I will answer but with skepticism.

If they are in my contacts I will recognise their voice.

We used to send an email from their account saying lunch/donuts are on me!
goguy··on Apple introduces M4 chip
Not found any good proxy which works well with cisco VPN software. Charles and proxyman work intermittently at best and require disconnecting from the VPN and various such dances.

Fiddler on windows works flawlessly.

goguy··on SSDs have become fast, except in the cloud
That really doesn't require that much complexity.

I used to send something like 250k a minute complete with delivery report processing from a single machine running a bunch of other services like 10 years ago.

goguy··on Spotify attacks Apple's 'outrageous' 27% commission
Wow, glad I avoid native app development. The eternal dictatorship.

The caffeine crystals one is wild.
goguy··on Google Maps has become an eyesore
That's not really true though is it. I use it countless times a week to navigate from my current location to point x l, generally a postal code or POI.

At no point during this do I have to interact with alternative businesses or way points.

goguy··on Regular Expressions make me feel like a powerful wizard: that's not a good thing
That's less readable than the original suggestion though.
goguy··on The window trick of Las Vegas hotels
Totally agree. It's a blog post, obviously it's your personal opinion and there's no need to explain nor excuse that.
goguy··on Strava hikes monthly subscription price
Definitely not. Everyone knows these things are super accurate, considering that it's pretty darn good.
goguy··on Web IDE Beta
> If someone came out with a free, cross-platform, attractive text editor that was a native executable and got critical mass going with a plugin ecosystem, then VS Code would fall out of fashion within a year.

Well yeah, there's the problem. This isn't an easy task, it has never been done before.

goguy··on Google introduces end-to-end encryption for Gmail on the web
Based on their performance recently, badly.
goguy··on Why are glasses so expensive? The industry prefers to keep that blurry (2019)
Just like anything you can shop around and get a good deal.

In the UK I use glasses direct, you can pick up a pair with a prescription for £50. They regularly have discount codes so most of the time that would be £35/40. Sure they aren't designer but they look ok for the price if you don't want to spend a lot, if you use them just got driving you can probably get an even cheaper pair that don't look as good.

goguy··on Who owns Tesla’s data?
There is no good reason they can't provide updates without scooping up all your data.

As a minimum they could keep vin/installed software version number and date times. It would be an acceptable compromise.

goguy··on What's the deal with all those weird wrong-number texts?
Or so you think...
goguy··on The unreasonable effectiveness of one-on-ones
Nice article, spotted a small typo.

If you don’t, you risk being seen as ~reliable~ and people might feel you’re not there when they need you.

goguy··on China’s noisy ‘dancing grannies’ silenced by device that disables speakers
Is it really that annoying? Appreciate someone sat in a park blasting music could be, it's generally stationary for a long period of time.

With a bike travelling at say ~10mph the noise is out of earshot in a few seconds.

goguy··on Why has the price of electricity in Europe reached record highs?
That's the problem though isn't it. Reliance on humans.
goguy··on Where are the robotic bricklayers?
Just wait for electrobot 2000 and the problem is resolved :)

goguy··on NDA expired, let’s spill the beans on a weird startup
They most likely didn't though as it would be a flat out lie. He probably explained the procedure etc but never commited to doing it himself specifically.

Or maybe something more important came up just prior. Ultimately people have the learn and have a go at some point - with your attitude they would be no more doctors.

goguy··on Twitter confirms Twitter Blue
People should learn to engage their brain, maybe mull it over for a while before posting on twitter. It doesn't seem to happen though so they may as well charge people for the ability to undo their mistakes!
goguy··on Feynman: I am burned out and I'll never accomplish anything (1985)
If you use third party libs with the appropriate licence then your the one that fixes it, just the same as if you rolled your own.

Sports news is usually pretty factual.

goguy··on U.S. Capitol Locked Down Amid Escalating Protests
There still needs to be scope for personal responsibility though. Blaming your own behaviours on the recommendation algorithm of youtube etc is just a cop out.
