gocartStatue··on The main thing about P2P meth is that there's so much of it (2021)
Or maybe, just maybe, abusing even pure, pharma-grade meth causes schizophrenia.
gocartStatue··on Mago: A fast PHP toolchain written in Rust
2G of ram at build is not that outrageous, however yes, with composer2 (released like 7 years ago?) it uses less ram. Also the frameworks got less bloated and more modular
gocartStatue··on Arctic sea ice sets a record low maximum in 2025
They receive less solar radiation, but still some. They both have great conditions for offshore wind.

Also all for nuclear, but decentralized renewables are great.

gocartStatue··on My 16-month theanine self-experiment
(Maybe it’s because tea is better than coffee?)

Coffee contains several ingredients that act as opioid receptor antagonists, which can be unpleasant (as in "reverse the pleasant / calming effects of endogenic opioids"). Some people seem to be more affected than others, kinda like with the intensive gastrin release / coffee induced instapoop.

gocartStatue··on No need to email me about Cisco AnyConnect
Another favourite after „I have toyota corola” emails to curl maintainer
gocartStatue··on A better merge workflow with Jujutsu
A better way for suboptimal workflow to begin with („multitasking” on branches)?
gocartStatue··on Ultrasonic investigations in shopping centres
Wait, people regularly just don’t hear it?

Obviously I had to try black metal version: https://suno.com/song/e00db515-6244-4197-ab71-c8f0555aaba4
gocartStatue··on Generation Junk
Small production batches are absolutely required for high quality (see Toyota, TQM)
gocartStatue··on 95%-ile isn't that good (2020)
I got to top 10% of Trackmania players (extremely competitive) just by watching Wirtual’s streams. Couple of advices (and learning to implement them) were worth more than hours of (bad) grinding.

And he is „only” in like 99,9th percentile in time trials, not even competing in top tournaments.

gocartStatue··on Databases are the endgame for data-oriented design
The tradeoff seems to be „ability to deploy working software without reliance on single central authority”. You may get rid of several smaller bottlenecks this way, introducing an enormous, all-encompassing one. Or am I wrong?
gocartStatue··on Commuter Cars Tango
Word for today: bicycle.
gocartStatue··on Pause Giant AI Experiments: An Open Letter
Thank you for verbalising the issue, overconfidence was the risk I was seeing all along. Widely accepted, shamelessly overconfident, bus still potentially gibberish generator.
gocartStatue··on I was banned because of a security flaw in Facebook’s password recovery system
Do you use it through an app, or web browser? I had the same situation. Always from safari on iOS.
gocartStatue··on I was banned because of a security flaw in Facebook’s password recovery system
I also got locked out because of „suspicious activity” (browsing fb through mobile browser on ios). Twice.

The first time around I got unbanned after several days, sending them my selfie etc.

The second time is now. They require phone number to send me a code, so I can „ask them to reconsider”. But I don’t receive the code. After several tries the page says „too many requests, wait 24h”.

I obviously have 2FA using authenticator. Got no other email than „you got 30 days to take action”.

The only reason I’m even trying is messenger and a few sad groups that are funny from time to time. Meh.

gocartStatue··on The $20 an hour Cessna 172 experiment (2020)
Ha! Classic Theory of Constraints: most constraints come from rules that used to accomodate for some limitations. Most of those limitations are long gone, but we’ve come to not question the rules; we mistake them with reality.
gocartStatue··on The cold hard truth about electric vehicles in winter
Well, it looks worse than I thought: https://insideevs.com/news/452464/tesla-model-y-heat-pump-sy...

With home air-to-air heat pumps I took COP of 2-3 as a base for heating, it seems that COP=1 is a big deal in a car.

gocartStatue··on The cold hard truth about electric vehicles in winter
Luckily the engines still generate plenty of heat and EVs use modern heat pumps.
gocartStatue··on Show HN: Obsidian Canvas – An infinite space for your ideas
I use it with Working Copy git client, nice and properly nerdy setup. There are nice ready-made guides for this combo.
gocartStatue··on Ask HN: What is the best thing you read in 2022?
Re-read „It’s Not Luck” by Elijahu Goldratt; maybe it’s not „epiphany”, but very good instruction on tackling seemingly „impossible” projects.
gocartStatue··on Why are male testosterone levels falling?
Some bodybuilders advocate not lowering e unless your boobs start to grow ;) better on the mood, joints, skin etc.
gocartStatue··on Why are male testosterone levels falling?
Imagine a person that started serious strength conditioning at 40. He will be much stronger at 50 than average 18 yo football player if he „follows the program” ;) yes, it does accumulate a lot over time.
gocartStatue··on Why are male testosterone levels falling?
Balanced but defined by your genes. My natural balance may be higher in estrogen and DHT for example, than someone else’s. My receptors can be more or less sensitive to some hormones. That explains why some people can feel great and some terrible with same lab results.
gocartStatue··on Getting Out of a Rut
May _or may not_ drive away depression. In my case it helped to exploit myself more than I thought is possible. Which eventually turned out ok, but took a few hard years of burnout, escapism and delusions.
gocartStatue··on How to build software like an SRE
I disagree so much with discarding unit tests, if you’re not dead sure of the base units, then you have a combinatoric explosion down the road. How do you even design code without unit tests :D
gocartStatue··on Show HN: FrankenPHP, an app server for PHP written in Go
Or Nix :)
gocartStatue··on Three Nord Stream gas pipelines damaged in one day
I am speechless. That is the most cynical approach I’ve ever seen. Makes me kinda happy that Germany is loosing its power in EU with every passing day of this war.
gocartStatue··on Three Nord Stream gas pipelines damaged in one day
Why would doing business with dangerous psychopath be so bad?

After all, we’d just continuously give him money and depend on his services for our wellbeing, choosing to ignore that he kills „some less important people way east”. Nothing to see here.

gocartStatue··on Ask HN: Inherited the worst code and tech team I have ever seen. How to fix it?
Top of mind: - Teach the team vcs 101, put the code under vcs; do trunk-based - ask about critical places in code and add logging - implement dead simple feature/experiment toggles - set up an example: develop all new changes as simple functions using TDD - put yourself in „harm’s way”. Do a live coding stream where you show your team how you do it. - If they like it, offer to do pair programming sessions. - add composer and start moving dependencies there, one by one - repeat 100x

That’ll be 200$ lol

gocartStatue··on A development process to ship features fast
Does it have to be post-coding, pre-merge code review?

The difference lies in size of the diff and the manner of introducing changes. Other developers have your changes instantly. This is core of the discipline called „continuous integration”.

I’ve been in multiple teams doing mandatory, pre-merge, double code reviews and getting crappy results. The longer someone kept their precious feature branch isolated, the worse.

And keeping branches „up to date” only solves a small part of the problem with long lived branches.
