gnu8··on The casino in your pocket
The gaming data is all stored server side and subject to the tightest controls imaginable. You would never be able to twiddle bits and get an advantage in the game. Your PI however is sold to all and sundry, as well as being made available in an S3 bucket with no permissions for anyone who doesn’t want to pay for it.
gnu8··on Google settles account settings lawsuit less than one week after being filed [pdf]
Google should move maps to a subdomain so they can request location permission for only that app!
gnu8··on Ask HN: Will Google delete inactive gmail accounts that forward email?
Thank you for the thoughtful reply. I will admit I was fulminating a bit. I'm just extremely frustrated that their solution to edge cases is to drop them on the floor and there's nothing to be done. No individual Google user actually matters to the company, but many people actually need their email account. The asymmetry of power and money here just isn't sustainable.
gnu8··on Ask HN: Will Google delete inactive gmail accounts that forward email?
The thing that baffles me the most is that literally no one at Google has thought of this. They should be having meetings where they come up with scenarios like this and plan out realistic ways of dealing with them. Google isn't responsible enough to run an email service, it's a toy business where techbros fuck around all day.
gnu8··on Ask HN: Any LAN alternatives other than PowerLine or MOCA?
It would help to know more about your home, including the materials and composition of the walls and the general layout. WiFi, powerline and MoCa all failing to perform suggests pathological levels of interference or a problem with your computers. Have you tried stringing a long cat 6 patch cable from one room to the other, just for the sake of experimentation?
gnu8··on Social media decline: Users are shifting to messaging apps and group chats
What we need is a way to objectively quantify the reduction of quality over time so that people will have a clear idea of what they’re actually buying rather than relying on a hazy and outdated idea of the brand’s reputation. People would know that the drill B&D is selling in 2023 is a 40% drill, not the 80% drill they were selling in 1993.

Reducing quality and coasting on goodwill isn’t really alpha, it’s actually just stealing. They used information asymmetry to sell the customer less drill than they thought they were getting and it shouldn’t be allowed.

gnu8··on Making life (even) harder for proprietary modules
Almost anything; they won’t GPL their driver like they ought to, because they made unwise decisions surrounding the use of material covered by software patents and non-Free licenses, and thus are unable to do so.
gnu8··on Fake Call Centre Busted: Scammers Made Rs 40 Lakh a Day by Cheating Americans
In case anyone who is not familiar with Indian money is wondering, that is a lakh of money.
gnu8··on Kentucky school system closes after first day: ‘transportation disaster’
You believe the traveling salesman problem for 100k students at 165 schools can be figured out with pencil and paper in a few hours?
gnu8··on A Grumman F11 Tiger Shot Itself Down (2021)
I'm still not sure if that was written as a joke or a simplified explanation for military personnel who are not engineers (pilots).
gnu8··on Franz Kafka was a healthcare claims administrator and insurance underwriter
Some Chiropractors and their patients are under the impression that actual diseases and injuries can be cured by performing the manual adjustments of the body, which leads to people dying of untreated cancer, or orthopedic injuries being aggravated instead of treated properly. Not to say that there aren’t good Chiropractors who recognize their limits, but they all tend to get painted with the same brush.
gnu8··on Fedora considers “privacy-preserving” telemetry
I’m not the bad actor, those who want to add telemetry to their open source software are. To the extent that jamming telemetry systems with false or inaccurate data discourages Fedora and others from adding telemetry to their software, I am making a positive contribution to OSS.

Stop trying to treat my computers like they are a part of your test lab.

gnu8··on Fedora considers “privacy-preserving” telemetry
If you don’t add telemetry to your software then you won’t have a problem.
gnu8··on Fedora considers “privacy-preserving” telemetry
It's open source so I'm just going modify the telemetry program to send nonsense and publish my changes on shithub so anyone else who wants to monkey wrench Fedora's telemetry can do so (even if they don't actually run Fedora).
gnu8··on The A-10 is retiring and the Air Force has no close air support replacement
Put a loudspeaker on a drone.
gnu8··on The FBI has formed a national database to track swatting incidents
In this event, it wasn't the actual SWAT, the team in the police department assigned and trained to carry out this type of thing. Instead it was drug detectives who evidently wanted the chance to go out and play army. The whole thing was run with an appalling lack of common sense or adherence to their own written policies and it points to a breakdown of discipline within the department.
gnu8··on P1030680: Unbroken Enigma message (U534, 01 May 1945)
In absolute terms, pre-digital cryptographic equipment operator isn't the worst wartime job I can think of. However, on a U-boat, all of the jobs were equally worse (due to life expectancy).
gnu8··on The least interesting part about AVX-512 is the 512 bits vector width
> * VPTERNLOGD (your swiss army railgun for bitwise logic, can often fuse 2 or even 3 ops into one)

I wonder if this would be useful for implementing cryptographic algorithms.

gnu8··on Sennheiser HD 555 to HD 595 Mod
If that were true then the replacement driver for the HD595 would be a matched set, not a single driver labelled “HD 555 / HD 595” as shown.
gnu8··on New York State Senate passes prohibitions on non-competes
Never mind the issue of tech worker poaching and whatever secret agreements the companies made, the real issue here is Ballmer’s terrifying spasm of violence. He ought to have been removed from the building and barred from the property, and his employment terminated. That type of outburst is never ok because it forces everyone to wonder at what point he might assault someone.

I don’t care how many billions of dollars are at stake, none of it is worth getting hurt over, and throwing chairs around demonstrates that he has lost that perspective.

gnu8··on System76's coreboot open firmware manages to disable Intel ME for Raptor Lake
Raising yet more questions about how AMT participates in enterprise WiFi authentication schemes. My laptop at work has a computer certificate which works for the OS, but how does AMT have credentials or even know which SSID to associate with?
gnu8··on System76's coreboot open firmware manages to disable Intel ME for Raptor Lake
I would like to know how the ME shares the NIC with the user OS on these systems. Do they have a completely separate interface that somehow uses the same physical port? Do the drivers from the two operating systems cooperate? Do they have one MAC address or two? What happens if the user installs a PCI NIC and doesn’t plug in the onboard interface?
gnu8··on Kissinger's killing fields
> enemy combatant

You’re thinking of the wrong war criminal. Enemy combatant was a designation invented by the Bush administration to avoid the requirement to treat War on Terror prisoners as would be appropriate to either soldiers or civilians. I don’t think the term existed in the Vietnam era but if it did it wouldn’t apply to NVA/VC forces operating out of Cambodian territory.

gnu8··on UUIDs are obsolete in the age of Docker
> They are awful as keys – being strings, comparisons are dramatically slower than with integers. And even if your database has a UUID type, it’s still worse because the identifier doesn’t fit into a machine word.

I’m just a bit confused, a UUID is made up of hexadecimal digits, so why would it be stored as a string? It’s also 128 bits long, so it should fit into two words, excluding whatever overhead the DBMS puts on the data type, which is really their problem to worry about.

gnu8··on Apple is now worth more than the entire Russell 2000
A better idiom for your use case might be ‘carry water’. Saying Tim Cook carries water for the CCP would be to say he does the work of the CCP, equivalent to towing a load. However, I think this is a stronger phrase than what the original commenter intended.
gnu8··on Apple is now worth more than the entire Russell 2000
The runner crosses the line once the starting gun fires. See it as coming up to the line that one is expected to be at, rather than edging close to a border that one is expected not to overstep.

gnu8··on The Bitcoin whitepaper is hidden in every copy of macOS
Perhaps not the most beautiful or noble thing, but it certainly has been impactful, like the invention of nerve gas.
gnu8··on The collapse of companies like SVB is triggering demand for corporate merch
I could imagine a company that vaults physical objects and tracks ownership by NFTs. The NFTs could then be traded and the current owner of the thing attached to the NFT could view the object through a web cam. Of course the owner could take delivery of the object for an added fee.
