gmu3··on Knuth versus Email (1999)
Read an article last month that was somewhat seriously asking if Trump has ever used a computer: http://gizmodo.com/has-donald-trump-ever-used-a-computer-176...
gmu3··on A Spellchecker Used to Be a Major Feat of Software Engineering (2008)
I still remember getting a new computer for Christmas almost two decades ago and seeing Microsoft underline words red and correct spelling/grammar the first time. It felt like magic.
gmu3··on Estimate the cost of a Web, iOS or Android app
If it's changed, won't you have to convert all the numbers too?
gmu3··on The internet’s own boy: the story of Aaron Swartz [video]
There's actually quite a precedent of engaging in political activism from jail.
gmu3··on Ask HN: What are the books that changed the perspective of your life?
I like these posts as much as everyone else, but this is literally at least the third one this week. Maybe it could become a recurring monthly thing like the hiring posts.

Walden: "Society is commonly too cheap. We meet at very short intervals, not having had time to acquire any new value for each other. We meet at meals three times a day, and give each other a new taste of that old musty cheese that we are. We have had to agree on a certain set of rules, called etiquette and politeness, to make this frequent meeting tolerable and that we need not come to open war. We meet at the post-office, and at the sociable, and about the fireside every night; we live thick and are in each other's way, and stumble over one another, and I think that we thus lose some respect for one another. Certainly less frequency would suffice for all important and hearty communications."

Part of the reason I'm off fb.

gmu3··on If you are storing important info in Evernote, think twice
He's willing to pay someone $5/month too when I think he doesn't even pay for Evernote. If he did his ticket would have been picked up in 24 hours and they would have suggested he check note history.
gmu3··on Make Your Startup Great at One Thing
I had a Wallet Ninja several months ago and it could be useful every once in awhile. I'd go the airport though and I would be stopped every time, and I'd have to talk to the agent and insist it's TSA compliant. After a handful of times, I decided it was nowhere near worth the hassle.
gmu3··on How much do indie PC devs make, anyways?
Indie game dev Jason Rohrer (Passage/The Castle Doctrine/Cordial Minuet) recently had a forum post about his income. I'd link to it but he's requested people not link to the Cordial Minuet forums:

We made $140K from The Castle Doctrine (and other games) in 2014. We made a bit more from TCD in 2013 as well, with the grand total somewhere up near $180K.

The TOTAL tribute received from all Cordial Minuet games so far is $683.4939. Of course, I also paid out $420 in prize money for the first tournament. Thus, the total income is only $263.49. I've been actively working on Cordial Minuet since June 19, 2014.

Cordial Minuet is my 18th game. I made 12 games that made nothing or close to nothing. My 13th game brought in a few thousand dollars. My 14th game brought in about $100K. At that point, I had been making games for about 5 years, and trying to make a living from independent software for about 7 years.

gmu3··on Making Top Colleges Less Aristocratic and More Meritocratic
Making colleges more meritocratic while preaching about affirmative action seems somewhat at odds.
gmu3··on The Next Chapter – moot retires from 4chan
moot is never capitalized. I guess we'll see but I mainly read it as he was stepping down as an administrator.
gmu3··on Optimizely Statistics Engine
Their graphs don't only adjust up. That one does, but that's because the only really significant downward movement is while their regression is still trailing behind.
gmu3··on Optimizely Statistics Engine
I don't think the graph is particularly good either, but I think you're maybe reading it wrong too. The y axis is significance level which makes sense would normally improve as visitors go up. Their line arguably is a moving average regression.
gmu3··on Ask HN: Does anyone actually hire from 'developer bootcamps'?
How effective are graduates: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=7599475
gmu3··on Learning Curves for Different Programming Languages
In addition to being obnoxious I don't even think your analogy is correct. Programming languages are the tools, and it makes sense a non mechanic wouldn't understand why some tools are better than others.
gmu3··on MIT indefinitely removes online physics lectures and courses by Walter Lewin
Actually a lot of Nazi research such as Pernkopf Anatomy is removed from the library/institutions on ethical grounds.
gmu3··on Why the Chess Computer Deep Blue Played Like a Human
When I think of Deep Blue not playing like a computer, I think more so of it leaving itself open to a forced draw the one game when it had the upper hand.
gmu3··on The Human Factor – the 2009 crash of Air France Flight 447
Nicholas Carr's new book is also about the dangers of too much automation: http://www.amazon.com/Glass-Cage-Automation-Us/dp/0393240762
gmu3··on Dremel Releases a Mass-Market 3D Printer
This SLA printer is actually pretty good for ~$2k https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/fsl/pegasus-touch-laser...
gmu3··on Dremel Releases a Mass-Market 3D Printer
I've played around with both, and the extruder printers are generally vastly inferior to the printers that use lasers.
gmu3··on Apple releases U2 album removal tool
Where was it proven false? I saw them say it wasn't them, but that's not really solid proof.
gmu3··on How the Napa Earthquake Affected Bay Area Sleepers
If it was selection bias like that, the same would apply to people in other cities, so it wouldn't explain the difference in the graph. My guess is people in Santa Cruz on average have a longer commute.
gmu3··on Announcing UberPool
Not to sound pedantic, but I think you mean marginal cost.
gmu3··on What is Pythonic? (2005)
Syntax and style are tightly coupled in Python. It's not hard to remember i++ is the same as i+=1 or that if(bool) { can optionally have a line break between the guard and the brace. In other languages, you have more choices. If you have more choices and just type what comes to mind first, you're going to get stylistic inconsistencies.
gmu3··on What is Pythonic? (2005)
I hate poorly styled code. Edit: I don't know why I'm being downvoted for this. That kind of mentality inherently churns out bad code.
gmu3··on The New Airbnb
I think the best logos aren't immediately trivially apparent like the FedEx arrow, Tostitos dip bowl, Amazon A to Z, etc.
gmu3··on DuckDuckGo Regex Search
I would guess that small subset of users is a big subset of users that use DDG.
gmu3··on Starbucks to Provide Free College Education to Thousands of Workers
It's not the government's mandate nor responsibility to provide higher education in the United States. It infuriates me when citizens are so conceited they think the government should provide everything for them as if they have no agency themselves.
gmu3··on Web interface to talk to the bot that passed the Turing Test
I asked what its job was, and it responded: My father wanted me to be gynecologist, like he is. My mom dreams of my career on TV. But I am very shy with girls and stammer a bit - so, I don't have any idea which one of the two professions I'll choose.
gmu3··on A Test for School Reform in Newark
The union contracts are really out of control. For those that aren't aware, research "rubber rooms". Hundreds of teachers in NYC are literally paid to come and sit in empty rooms and do nothing while they wait years to be reviewed because the districts don't have the ability to fire teachers.
gmu3··on Paying to get rid of pagination on Slate.com?
I love the pay to remove ads business model as well. I've often wondered why the internet culturally seems so against it.

I read somewhere that the CPM for YouTube video ads is $7.60. I doubt I struggle through a couple thousand ads a year, so if they charged me a dollar a month it would be a win win: I'd get hours of my life back and they'd get more revenue and less overhead serving ads.
