gizmodo59··on Claude can now search the web
I got much better results with o3-mini than Claude for coding. Get the high level design wkth o3 or o1 and then use gpt4 or Claude for small tasks.

How much % it’s significant compared to say openai or google? Because if I’m paying 20$ I want other things too not just coding. And if the moat for coding compared to other vendors is not significant, it doesn’t make any difference tbh
gizmodo59··on Claude can now search the web
Major AI players don’t want to use someone else web index as they may cut it off or jack up the prices etc. major players want to build their own web index
gizmodo59··on Claude can now search the web
I know people in other industries use AI a lot and likes it. Accounting, legal, writing (a lot here). I agree that companies that focus on all verticals like openai is definitely the way to go. Claude code capabilities are not very significant compared to openai though. There is no big moat and a lot of it is perception, marketing.

You can wait to release something all over the world which will take time because it’s not an engineering issue but a compliance/legal or other types of issue. Or you can iterate faster by doing the minimum and getting feedback and then releasing it in other markets. Not sure what’s wrong with this approach.

What a match! It was sad to see the blunder by Ding. Reminded me of Nepo dropping pieces in the tie-break last time. But its a great sportmanship by Ding as he said its a fair outcome given all the games they have played.
gizmodo59··on Judge's Investigation into Patent Troll Results in Criminal Referrals
>> Just ridiculous...

Q. So how do you come to own something if you never paid for it with money? A. I wouldn't be able to explain it very well. That would be a better question for Mavexar.

Q. Well, you're the owner? A. Correct.

Q. How do you know you're the owner if you didn't pay anything for the patent? A. Because I have the paperwork that says I'm the owner.

gizmodo59··on FDA says 561 deaths tied to recalled Philips sleep apnea machines
I got diagnosed with sleep apnea due to “Laryngeal Apparatus- Collapse of epiglottis.”

Impression: DSL, IHT. Circumferential pharyngeal wall collapse in the Nasopharynx and Oropharynx. Epiglottis falling backwards.

The doctor told me there is no surgery or anything else but only CPAP as the solution :( I dread of a day when there is no electricity or the machine stopping working. Posting it here to see if anyone else knows a good doctor or have a similar issue!

Maintaining awareness of breath throughout the day is not an easy task but when you try to bring awareness every now and then it definitely helps you to be in the moment and not get carried away with thoughts. Helps to reduce stress and anxiousness too. Many meditative practices can help bring this like Vipassana or Samyama
gizmodo59··on Bezos Earth Fund Grants $400M for Greening Underserved Urban U.S. Communities
We all want to do it that way then.. I will choose my own ways to spend the tax dollars as I see fit? Too bad we don’t live in such a society

Being in enterprise software I have heard AI/Generative AI so many times since chatgpt became mainstream. Every fortune company I have spoken to wants to get on this train.
gizmodo59··on IKEA made a smart air quality sensor to track indoor pollution
It looks good. But the reviews on Amazon says it’s not having a good battery life. How’s it for you? I don’t need to travel that much so I can keep it plugged in all the time?
gizmodo59··on As a US Navy fighter pilot, I witnessed unidentified anomalous phenomena
Many commercial airlines at least international (like emirates) have cameras all over. You can even watch it from your seat.
gizmodo59··on Demystifying Apache Arrow (2020)
There is a bunch of other projects that grew out of arrow which are also contributing a lot to data engineering: https://www.dremio.com/blog/apache-arrows-rapid-growth-over-...
gizmodo59··on Writing good performance self reviews
We have this ridiculous app called CultureAmp. Every quarter we get emails and slacks from HR and managers asking us to complete it. It’s an absolute waste of time and no one really values it and yet you need to fill it out. This did not exist when the company was small. When you hire more people there are jobs that exist just to organize these things. To make things worse there is not a single question that asks “What the company can do better”.
gizmodo59··on DBT Cloud increase Team plan price by 100% and limit features at the same time
This made me laugh..

“We actually get community members reaching out to us concerned that we are under-charging them because they want our business to be successful! “

May be it’s true but it’s beyond me that people are asking for a price increase??

gizmodo59··on First active chemistry on an exoplanet revealed by Webb telescope
That still doesn’t disprove the point though. I like videos that get straight to the topic of the title rather than blabbering.

It’s very frustrating to see deceiving titles and the actual content related to the title is 2% of the entire video..

gizmodo59··on H-1B visa holders scramble for jobs after 2022 tech layoffs
How is that dumb? May be their calculation of odds in making it big (financially or otherwise) resulted in taking that chance. It’s not just direct money when someone educated and smart wants to work here. There is indirect money that comes in form of connections that have significant dividends long term even if they get kicked out. Not to mention a new cultural experience.. So I’d say people make calculations. You have no idea about the decision making process.
gizmodo59··on Nvidia Earning Results Q3 2023
FY23 means Jan-Dec 2022. In some companies the fiscal year starts Feb 1 in that case it’s Feb 1 2022 to Feb 1 2023 (It’s still called as FY23)
gizmodo59··on An Interview with Jerry Seinfeld (2017)
Watch from 4th season you might like it. I did not like the first few too. Glad I did not stop after that as Seinfeld and Curb gave me the most laughs ever for a TV show
gizmodo59··on Q – Run SQL Directly on CSV or TSV Files
I will give it a shot!

The web application is just a UI to get started. It acts like a database providing you with jdbc and odbc drivers and arrow flight protocol: https://github.com/dremio-hub/arrow-flight-client-examples

gizmodo59··on Q – Run SQL Directly on CSV or TSV Files
I have been using Dremio to query large volume of CSV files: https://docs.dremio.com/software/data-sources/files-and-dire...

Although having them in some columnar format is much better for fast responses.

GitHub: https://github.com/dremio/dremio-oss

gizmodo59··on Health insurers just published close to a trillion hospital prices
Yeah.. It would be much easier to copy the data to S3/any object storage (better to convert it into a columnar format like parquet) and query it directly using a SQL on lake engine like Dremio or Athena or S3Select would work too.
gizmodo59··on Update on StoreKit External Entitlement for dating apps
I will never subscribe to services for the most part if they don’t provide a way via Apple. I’m sorry but I don’t want to email, call someone, answer hundred questions of why I want to unsubscribe etc. I want a single click unsubscribe with no questions asked. A very handful of companies do this. If they earn my trust then I will, until then I prefer to do it via Apple.

When I promoted dark knight it just shows all other super hero movies when I really like Nolan movies more than other action hero movies.
gizmodo59··on CockroachDB: The Resilient Geo-Distributed SQL Database
That’s the job of sales engineer too in many cases. But a good account executive will tell you upfront if it’s not a good use case. If not you won’t buy at the end of evaluation and that has consequences for them (Companies need to predict quarterly revenues and by betting on a bad use case that person will have a bad projection of sales for that quarter or year which will ultimately be bad for them)
gizmodo59··on CockroachDB: The Resilient Geo-Distributed SQL Database
I often see these “I raised this to sales team… but they are not listening”. The cost of the sales team (including sales engineers) working on an opportunity is not low. If you have a use case and explain to them how you want to use their product (and if you are serious enough to buy it at the end of evaluation if it satisfies your requirements. You must also have influence in your company to make decisions. Some random startup with little cash to spend on software is not going to get you far) then they will surely try to address each of your specific issues. If not they may tell you it’s not a good use case. Just saying something about compatibility doesn’t really give them (or any Enterprise software vendor) to really hear you.

This is not to say all companies are like that but that’s how it works in general in enterprise software. Every conversation is part of a Salesforce stage (whether we like it or not)

gizmodo59··on Tell HN: AWS appears to be down again
It doesn’t matter how much of resiliency engineering you do. Having everything in a single AZ is a risk. If this is acceptable then it’s fine if not you need to think of multi az from day 1.
gizmodo59··on Up all night with a Twitch millionaire
“ But as a gig worker for a media empire, even a successful streamer like Tyler has a livelihood that’s inherently unstable — without insurance, unions, sick days, retirement funds or hope for a sustainable career.”

That’s funny. He has earned more in a year than many in a decade. Million a year and it’s unstable. What makes you think the job of a software engineer is stable! He is skilled in entertainment. He will find a way.

gizmodo59··on AWS Redshift Serverless
Delta is not the way. I’d prefer an Apache project like Iceberg https://iceberg.apache.org/ rather than delta lake.
