gitfan86··on Woman Got Cremation Ads in the Mail After Getting Chemotherapy
Advertisement Campaigns are based on Returns on Investments not on accuracy. For example, lets say a "Pet Insurance" company makes on average $400 profit for each customer they obtain.

It makes sense for them to spend $200 to acquire each new customer. You could send out around 300 bulk letters for $200. So it makes sense to cast a wide net including mailing people who just made their first purchase at a pet store. Obviously some of those people only bought a $4 gold fish and will laugh at the pet insurance quote.

gitfan86··on Neal Stephenson was prescient about our AI age
It seems unlikely that there has ever been someone making a prediction, never telling anyone about the prediction and then living his life as if he never made the prediction.

I predict that Donald Trump will claim election fraud in states he loses in 2024. Is that self fulfilling if it happens since I said it publicly?

Both have a goal of high reliability. They are both solving the problem of running you application on a single server.
gitfan86··on New IBM LinuxONE 4 Express – Rack-mounted pre-configured Linux mainframe
Yes, Hard drives can die, power supply can die, another user can write an infinite loop and it will not kill your terminal.

Not a big deal today, but in the 80s hard drives died more frequently and a bank losing just 5 seconds of transactions could cost them millions.

gitfan86··on New IBM LinuxONE 4 Express – Rack-mounted pre-configured Linux mainframe
I worked on them a bit while at IBM.

You can open a terminal and come back in a month and it will still be there. Unlikely kunernetes where containers regularly go down.

You can obviously achieve high reliability with Kunernetes, but you'll need queues and retry logic, that you don't need with SystemZ.

gitfan86··on Tesla driver pulled over after wearing new Apple vision headset on highway
I'm not aware of the far right being labeled as woke before. Generally they are called conspiracy theorists, or MAGA. I don't think they are generally virtue signaling either. When they say Trump had the election stolen they seem to actually believe that and would like for Trump to take over the presidency today.

Unlike the left wing virtue signalers who say things like "abolish the police", but in reality do actually want to be able to call the police when someone is trying to break into their house.

gitfan86··on Tesla driver pulled over after wearing new Apple vision headset on highway
Musk has been very influential in making woke virtue signaling online less rewarding.

Of course the biggest virtue signalers are going to leave Twitter and look for other places to virtue signal.

gitfan86··on Carl Weathers has died
For those that don't know he played himself in the show as an acting coach, but all of his advice was related to how to get multiple meals from the catering at filmings.
gitfan86··on LLaVA-1.6: Improved reasoning, OCR, and world knowledge
My best guess is that you want a supervisor GPT-4 like LLM planning the task and a lower level on-prem LLM doing the tasks like driving from one location to another or grasping an item.

Sending every frame to GTP-4 right now is way too slow. But at Tesla FSD like model can drive from one location to another in a closed environment with perfection. All that is missing is training that style in a roomba/robot form and then having GTP-4 monitor and manage the tasks at a 10 or 20 second interval

gitfan86··on Elon Musk Is Overpaid
I find it ironic that you assume the person who owned 9 shares brought the suit actually felt harmed by the inappropriate use of the word independent and doesn't have some other undisclosed interest in regards to filing suit.
gitfan86··on Elon Musk Is Overpaid
Im not suggesting that all rules should be removed. I'm suggesting that if the laws and rules exist to protect shareholders, the courts should take shareholders' expectations into account. None of us who owned TSLA in 2018 looked at the board of directors, which included Musk's brother, and assumed it was a totally independent board, regardless of disclosures.

I sold some of those TSLA shares and moved them into NVDA last year and I have zero expectation that the NVDA BoD is 100% free of undisclosed conflicts of interest.

If the Delaware court system does not care about my expectations, fine, but they shouldn't claim to be helping me.

gitfan86··on Elon Musk Is Overpaid
Which is why people are talking about moving companies out of Delaware.

Why would an executive want to work at a company if after he achieves amazing results, his compensation can Ben clawed back, due to a missing one sentence disclaimer on a proxy statement?

gitfan86··on The FAA's Hiring Scandal: A Quick Overview
Yes, if you define the role you are hiring for as one where the applicant would have failed science in high school you will be hiring the most qualified applicant if they failed science in high school.

But how is failing science in high school good for working on aviation safety?

gitfan86··on The FAA's Hiring Scandal: A Quick Overview
It seems like a lot of the most liberal people left Twitter and some of them ended up here. They still believe that progressivism is calling people racist that disagree with policies like this.

I have hope that things will change though, once the virtue signalling result in something that can effect their safety theu will reconsider.

gitfan86··on Robotic "Companions" Are Testing the Scope of Privacy and Sexual Freedom
Sorry, my bad, so you are totally fine with sexbots as part of a 3 way.
gitfan86··on Robotic "Companions" Are Testing the Scope of Privacy and Sexual Freedom
In general middle aged women read unrealistic romance novels because they enjoy the fantasy and in general are never going to be with anyone that is as good looking and romantic as the men in those books.

I don't shame them for doing that. It is their choice.

gitfan86··on Robotic "Companions" Are Testing the Scope of Privacy and Sexual Freedom
So why is it ok for you to satisfy your desires with devices instead of with real human contact in a relationship?

There just isn't a clear argument for where the line should be drawn.

gitfan86··on Robotic "Companions" Are Testing the Scope of Privacy and Sexual Freedom
Like all technologies, there will be risks and negative outcomes.

Just look at books. At some point a married woman read a romance book that depicted an unrealistic male character who wanted nothing but to satisfy any desire of the woman in the book. And after reading that book she became unhappy in her marriage because her husband would never be like that character.

Is that a bad thing?

gitfan86··on Long Covid is associated with cognitive slowing
I would strongly suggest not blindly trusting "peer reviewed" and "top journals", especially on topics that are not easily provable.

"We conclude that despite widespread use of narcotic drugs in hospitals, the development of addiction is rare in medical patients with no history of addiction. "https://www.nejm.org/doi/10.1056/NEJM198001103020221 "Our analyses clearly show that SARS-CoV-2 is not a laboratory construct or a purposefully manipulated virus." https://www.nature.com/articles/s41591-020-0820-9

gitfan86··on Long Covid is associated with cognitive slowing
Correlation isn't causation. The highest risk factor of Long Covid is probably frequency of hearing about it from social media. Much like Fibromyalgia.
gitfan86··on Long Covid is associated with cognitive slowing
So if the real problems people are having "do not have a single simple cause", why are we calling it "Long Covid"?

The name implies that there is a known cause, and the diagnosis IS Long Covid.

gitfan86··on Michael Lewis's Blind Side
Agreed, that this book was written with a target audience in mind. (People who loved the blind side movie)

But, I also wonder how much of this is Lewis trying to avoid legal culpability. If he knew that the whole thing was a total scam and he didn't warn anyone but is now making millions of dollars of the story, the people who lost money in FTX may want to sue?

gitfan86··on Long Covid is associated with cognitive slowing
The definition that the CDC created backs up my statement. "Long COVID is not one condition. It represents many potentially overlapping entities, likely with different biological causes and different sets of risk factors and outcomes."

https://www.covid.gov/be-informed/longcovid/about#term

Any pain or psychological issue you have after covid can be categorized as "Long Covid". Which is ridiculous because if covid never happened we wouldn't expect joint pain and depression to go away. Those things existed long before covid and should have been expected to exist after covid.

Non reproduced studies that cherry pick data to fit the conclusion do not refute these facts.

gitfan86··on Google TPU v5p beats Nvidia H100
It will keep going up until a Wall St analyst puts in an insane price target like $5000. Then it will be time to sell. It should follow AMZN from the dotcom bubble.
gitfan86··on Google TPU v5p beats Nvidia H100
We are still at the beginning of Wall St freaking out
gitfan86··on Google TPU v5p beats Nvidia H100
I sold my GOOG shares from 2005 to buy NVDA last year and definitely agree with the article.

The thing is that Wall St doesn't understand any of the technical details and will just see huge profit growth from NVDA and drive the price crazy high.

DEI and diversity hiring incentives are much less popular due to Harvard's statements on free speech and also the supreme Court decision regarding the legality of not hiring white/Asian people due to their race.
gitfan86··on Joining a Gym? Here's Why You Should Open a New Bank Account
Sure, but you can just ignore that, or tell them to sue you because the debt isn't valid.

They are not going to take you to court and if they put it in your credit report you can dispute that as well.

The only thing they can actually to do you is prevent you from going to the gym again

How do you measure the output of a DEI department? Now assume those people automated their jobs with Chat GPT. How would you measure the change in productivity?
