gimme_treefiddy··on Internet shutdowns at record high in Africa as access 'weaponised'
Lets peek into whether those divisions are organic or driven through NGOs.
gimme_treefiddy··on Internet shutdowns at record high in Africa as access 'weaponised'
Note how almost no one will acknowledge this is happening in the backdrop of unravelling of USAID and how certain powers in the world sow discord in other countries.

I have done a complete 180 on this issue in recent years.

gimme_treefiddy··on EA Open Sources Command and Conquer: Red Alert
Damn looks like remastered one doesn't have the Zero Hour version in it.
gimme_treefiddy··on Dropbox to reduce global workforce by about 16%, or 500 staff
> Having an enterprise product automatically increases headcount by 5x

Can you expand on this. Why is this the case. Does it even mean increase in engg headcount, if so why. Can you link to somewhere if possible. Always had this question, and this pattern is very similar in other places. So maybe it works?

gimme_treefiddy··on Even Apple employees hate Siri and are skeptical of its future, new report says
Is it just me or Siri is very bad at picking up accents (mine isn't that bad having lived in the US for a while) and background noise.

One of the more impressive things about using the Google's voice assistant was, it did very well in noisy environments. Whereas with Siri, that is quite a bit of struggle. This is only about speech-to-text, not text-to-whatever.

> They raised a ton of money on a high valuation, spent 25mil to make 1 mil last year and are now scrambling to raise a new crowd sourced round because they don't want to get wiped out in a down round.

Sorry to get off-topic, but is there a read/book to understand funding, VCs, etc., from a holistic POV. I totally didn't expect that consequence of having to raise a crowd sourced round due to initial high valuation.

gimme_treefiddy··on Berkshire Hathaway buys more AAPL stock, ditches most of TSMC
> how to design

This is different than what Intel/AMD/Nvidia/Apple does when designing their own chips, right?

gimme_treefiddy··on Five origami books by Shuzo Fujimoto are now public domain
Seems to be working now.
gimme_treefiddy··on Cloud desktops aren't as good as you'd think
Damn, when you said Google I thought you were gonna talk about Cloudtop, etc. +1 to your recommendation, but they do a pretty good job Cloudtop too(for non-power users it is pretty usable).

gimme_treefiddy··on Micron picks Syracuse for computer chip plant that would bring up to 9k jobs
Any idea why it would require this much water?
gimme_treefiddy··on ‘I’d rather eat an actual burger’: plant-based meat’s sizzle fizzled in the US
McD India has great options. Some of these chains are actually much better outside the US.
gimme_treefiddy··on Reimagining front-end web development with htmx and hyperscript
I feel complex UI development becomes a ease with SPA ecosystem than server side.
gimme_treefiddy··on Reimagining front-end web development with htmx and hyperscript
One of the things that I found lacking, was doing like general computing-esque business intelligence tasks in htmx. For example, how would you set src on image tag upon a click. Ended up having to use jquery.
gimme_treefiddy··on Dear Spotify, can we just get a table of songs?
I’ve developed such a inadvertent hatred for Spotify because of their app.
gimme_treefiddy··on Show HN: An open source alternative to Evernote (Self Hosted)
Definitely will give a go by deploying privately.

Does it support markdown extensions, like GitHub flavored markdown or something.

gimme_treefiddy··on Google's Subsea Fiber Optics
How much of it is government lockout/red tape?
gimme_treefiddy··on Stripe responds to the Financial Connections/Plaid kerfuffle
What we really need a thread by Ryan Breslow.
gimme_treefiddy··on When I tell the Windows Terminal team something is simple, I am "misguided"
Maybe I’m nitpicking since it’s OSS, but sometimes it’s not even the code. From the outside it seems like a few lines of code but internally there’s a whole org and OKRs and what not.
gimme_treefiddy··on When I tell the Windows Terminal team something is simple, I am "misguided"
Honestly the vague reference is what turned me off. It’s not thing to point at a specific item and suggest different approach, but to simply say the whole thing is over complicated makes it seems deliberately vague to be inflammatory.
gimme_treefiddy··on When I tell the Windows Terminal team something is simple, I am "misguided"
It does seem vague though. It’s almost akin to saying “I could’ve done this in half the code”. Well add your PR then.
gimme_treefiddy··on Two Silicon Valley executives charged with H-1B visa fraud
Care to share some data. Even anecdata maybe?
gimme_treefiddy··on Bitcoin consumed 134 TWh in total during 2021
You, that’s the word I was looking for. There are solutions out there which achieve similar objective. It’s like they the benefits of blockchain are being used for bitcoin, but if you designed one with bitcoin in mind, there is efficient solution there.
gimme_treefiddy··on Bitcoin consumed 134 TWh in total during 2021
No, I meant instead of blockchain.
gimme_treefiddy··on Bitcoin consumed 134 TWh in total during 2021
Slightly tangential question: Couldn't Bitcoin be implemented on something other Blockchain, since Blockchain is so computationally intensive. Like why not use a SQL database instead. It's definitely not technically infeasible, and you can reliably achieve all objectives of Bitcoin by doing so.

The idea of independent financial system is great, but the inefficiency of it's usage is something I am very doubtful about.

gimme_treefiddy··on Facebook exec blames society for COVID misinformation
I feel like the “toxic” big tech social media platforms have been a lot more impartial than any of the MSM sources these days. I don’t think the parent comment argued for that though.
gimme_treefiddy··on Facebook exec blames society for COVID misinformation
Won’t the regulation force them to censor? I get not wanting corporations to moderate discourse, but I can’t help but feel they get shit from both ends.

Fuck you if you censor, and fuck you if you don’t.

gimme_treefiddy··on Clubhouse’s Inevitability
I don’t get why they don’t have an android app yet. Is it part of maintaining exclusivity, or does building an android app that challenging, especially for something like clubhouse.
