gilaniali··on Udacity restructures operations, lays off 20 percent of its workforce
For me personally, it comes down to cost and acceptability. I would like to pursue nanodegrees but the cost is much higher than Coursera - which has a monthly subscription model. Also, Coursera has an expanding offering of Master's degrees from world renowned Univerities which employers will accept (my employer - a Canadian Bank will even pay for online masters degrees) but nanodegrees seem like vaporware, if Udacity goes under how do I get my nanodegrees verified? If the cost were lower, i could take the risk.

The Fraser institute, which published this study, has a right wing bias and is funded by the Koch Brothers. It seeks to displace the public system in Canada with private healthcare modelled after the US. While they claim independence and give their research away freely, one should be aware of their interests.
gilaniali··on The terrorist inside my husband's brain
It is astounding that someone with the resources to pay for the best medical care was unable to arrive at the correct diagnosis. As we move towards AI assisted diagnoses, hopefully such suffering can be mitigated.

Do neurologists follow checklists when diagnosing symptoms? Will this case change their procedures going forward?

gilaniali··on Ask HN: Incorporate first, develop later?
What are the exceptions? Any legal source for your claims that this will work?
gilaniali··on Ask HN: Incorporate first, develop later?
I doubt any of the developers being sued by Lodsys knew they were infringing on these patents.

And there is no sure way to know which small thing is under patent than to spend hours going through the patent archives or hiring expensive patent lawyers.

gilaniali··on Ask HN: Tax Haven for startups?
Fantastic Answer. Heres a few more what-ifs.

When I said tech startup, i meant companies developing web applications that people pay for. So for example, if people use DropBox or Basecamp, and there is no guy making a commission, then you can only tax the company in which ever state it is in?

Also, what about incorporating abroad but having your customers in the US?

gilaniali··on Why Python chose Mercurial
They do mention: "We are pragmatic enough to not choose a tool simply because it is written in Python, but we do see the usefulness in promoting tools that do use it when it is reasonable to do so as it is in this case."
gilaniali··on Why Python chose Mercurial
There is a lighting talk of some of the reasons at PyCon 2009. http://pycon.blip.tv/file/1947231/

gilaniali··on Ask YC: How to learn the most programming possible in 9 months?
You need to read this essay by Peter Norvig: http://norvig.com/21-days.html

Its very easy to learn the syntax of any language, you can probably do 5-10 a day. But to really learn a language, you must use it. Try to solve problems and try reinventing the wheel a couple of times.

gilaniali··on Ask HN: Best git tutorial for designers?
gitref.org is great. Its concise enough to get you and your team started. You can then move on to progit.org if you want advanced info

if you care about mercurial (I do), hginit.com is great. It even provides a intro specifically for users coming from Subversion. you can then move on to http://hgbook.red-bean.com/.

Did you design the site layout or did you buy it from somewhere?
gilaniali··on Ask HN: are there api's for bank's such as Wachovia and Bank of America?
Most banks dont really have apis. The way to get information is then to screen scrape but this would require your clients to give you information. Services like Yodlee.com simplify the process but are quite expensive to use unless you are funded.
gilaniali··on Scala or Ruby/Rails
While I personally use Django/python, going with Rails in quite beneficial as opposed to Scala.

Firstly, there is a huge established community to help you out and you can readily find programmers to hire.

Second, rails (or django) will allow you to get up and running quickly and will let you figure out whether your app is viable or not. If it works out, you can then start thinking about scaling and such. For now, use an established web framework(Django, Rails, Cakephp) and get it done.

gilaniali··on Ask HN: How can startups using Yodlee afford it?
I wouldn't be surprised if Swipely and Blippy use them too.
gilaniali··on Ask HN: Help me find an exotic programming language to learn next
learn R.
gilaniali··on Ask HN: Where do you find survey respondents?
You can use Amazon's Mechanical Turk Service to hire people to take surveys. Read this earlier post:
