gigglesupstairs··on Apple's On-Device and Server Foundation Models
Yes, exactly this. I have had this for a while and works wonderfully well in most cases but it’s wonky and not seamless. I wanted a more integrated approach with Photos app which only Apple can bring to the table.
gigglesupstairs··on Apple's On-Device and Server Foundation Models
Was there anything about searching through our own photos using prompts? I thought this could be pretty amazing and still a natural way to find very specific photos in one’s own photo gallery.
gigglesupstairs··on Show HN: I made a web game that makes practicing basic arithmetic fun
Yeah it was confusing. Idea is to press first and the last number of the equation as far as I have understood. UX is wonky but I love such math challenges so it’s all cool.
gigglesupstairs··on Google's AI-generated search results keep citing The Onion
Moderators can turn archiving on or off in subreddit settings. That dictates whether someone can comment or not comment on posts older than six months.
gigglesupstairs··on Hackers discover how to reprogram NES Tetris from within the game
Some of those “hackers” are twelve years olds, so earning money may not be the most important thing for them.
gigglesupstairs··on Ask HN: How to manage phones and PCs for elderly parents?
Great example. Similar design patterns result in similar user experiences irrespective of platform. Who would have thunk?
gigglesupstairs··on Have you ever resigned because of your own poor performance?
You sound burnt out? Why not take a brief sabbatical and see if you still feel the same after? Since you felt passionate about what you were doing earlier but that took a hit because of that employee, and that still remains an unfinished business, that passion may come back to you.
gigglesupstairs··on Scientists have traced human tail loss to a short sequence of genetic code
Exactly. I still find noses and ears to be such noticeable protrusions once I let go of my knowledge of human faces.
gigglesupstairs··on Pure CSS Website
Wow. Thanks for sharing.
gigglesupstairs··on Ahead of IPO, Reddit blends advertising into user posts
Reddit for porn already exists. On Reddit.
gigglesupstairs··on A generalist AI agent for 3D video games
When I played it some three years back, one needed to find usually some oxygen plants and caves for oxygen refills. I bet core play still remains the same. It really isn’t that hard tbh.
gigglesupstairs··on Elon Musk sues Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, and OpenAI [pdf]
> One could argue a common characteristic of the above exams is that they each test memory, and, as such, one could argue that GPT-4's above-average performance is not necessarily evidence of "reasoning". That is, GPT-4 has no "understanding" but it has formidable reading speed and retention (memory).

I don’t think they will make this argument since it will heavily negate their (expected) argument that they’re not open-sourcing the model because of safety concerns.

gigglesupstairs··on Ketogenic diet reduces alcohol craving
Isn’t addiction an “excessive” form of any craving? If it can be curbed at a craving stage, why should it still be called addiction?
gigglesupstairs··on Amazon blocks long-running FireTV capability, Breaking apps with no warning
I’ve had Five stick 4k for almost five years now as well and its performance still holds pretty good.
gigglesupstairs··on Reddit hasn't turned a profit in 20 years, filed to go public anyway
As much as I deride any kind of awards except classic gold, I think this was one of their better decisions all things considered.
gigglesupstairs··on Reddit hasn't turned a profit in 20 years, filed to go public anyway
Thing is not many were buying expensive awards when smaller much much cheaper awards were available at their disposal. They perhaps found from their research that giving so much choice to users was working against them in this case and took this decision.
gigglesupstairs··on Reddit hasn't turned a profit in 20 years, filed to go public anyway
Awards still exist. They just streamlined them. Instead of 100 different awards which cluttered the interface right below the post title, they replaced them with 6-7 variations of gold and simplified the UI and look & feel.
gigglesupstairs··on Tell HN: Mail app on Windows forces Outlook
I remember getting a prompt some months back or perhaps even a year or so back that default mail app is being deprecated and new outlook will replace it. So it’s possible its development has already stopped and they’re now focusing on only one client. I also doubt it’s a full fledged outlook app bundled with Office and could be more like outlook express of yore.
gigglesupstairs··on An 'education legend' has created an AI that will change your mind about AI

gigglesupstairs··on Sora: Creating video from text
Looking at the scale of this announcement, it’s likelier that Google just preempted their announcement with their own.
gigglesupstairs··on Sora: Creating video from text
Drastic difference in quality of the prompts too. Ones used in the OP are quite detailed ones mostly.
gigglesupstairs··on Sora: Creating video from text
All those videos made me so scared of what’s about to come in next few years. India is already a major market for perpetrators of misinformation and with major social media giants only paying lip service to our concerns, with western countries being their major focus, things portend to get even more darker for the poor, the disenfranchised in our side of the world.
gigglesupstairs··on Show HN: Improve cognitive focus in 1 minute
The first time I encountered such a jump scare was someone presenting their animation done in Macromedia Director. Not kidding, it was really traumatic in nature at the time. And I just didn’t get the fun others supposedly felt for this kind of “fun”.
gigglesupstairs··on Canada Must End Reliance on Cheap Foreign Labor, Minister Says
Do you have any source for that stadium example? I’m hearing it for the first time and Google didn’t help.
gigglesupstairs··on Hopes for Finding Mars Life After Rover's Ground-Penetrating Radar Discovery
Manned missions are not in fact on the horizon. At all.
gigglesupstairs··on Apple to EU, Drop Dead
This is for iOS and not macOS. Why did you share this?
gigglesupstairs··on Brains are not required to think or solve problems – simple cells can do it
Yeah it’s likely the magazine issue date. Bad UX but not a bug.
gigglesupstairs··on Researchers find signs of intelligence among jumping spiders
May be because of their unpredictability owing to their jumpiness? That seems very reasonable since humans do instinctually stay away from unpredictable organisms/animals in nature. That unpredictability doesn’t always have to correlate with the real dangerousness of those creatures.
gigglesupstairs··on Another Roman dodecahedron has been unearthed in England
Yeah, someone probably made it out of passion once, others liked it so much they offered him lot of money or fame, the art proliferated. Some artists created similar models, some modified on top of it.
gigglesupstairs··on Challenges to the credibility of two recent Netflix documentaries
It can be a great category on its own right if done correctly.
