gibsonje··on Critical Xen bug in PV memory virtualization code
We deploy to a single region. This maintenance was a major pain in the ass. We got a notice 72 hours ahead of time (only 1 business day ahead of time) that around 60% of all of our hosts failed live migration and would be rebooted.
gibsonje··on Same-Sex Marriage Is a Right, Supreme Court Rules
This is a case of states violating the constitution of the united states. It's a pretty clear violation of equal protection. It's not up to the states to decide this.

Rights of a minority should not be left to the democratic process.

gibsonje··on Oculus Rift
Not sure why I'm getting downvoted and why you think I'm saying the controller is bad.

Oculus keeps spreading tons of hype and making very disappointing announcements.

A bundled xbox one controller is nothing to get excited over. Their supposed new input is, but they had virtually nothing to show for that.

gibsonje··on Oculus Rift
"The oculus will ship with...

A wireless....

Xbox one controller"

I closed out of the stream at that point.

gibsonje··on Goodbye?
"For me, it's a process of learning to distrust my negative emotions. Afterwards they always seem unfounded."

This is very important.

gibsonje··on Apple I discarded as junk sells for $200k; mystery woman stands to get half
I have so many old computers/electronics. I can guarantee I couldn't pay someone (other than garbage collection) to take them, let alone make money off them.
gibsonje··on The real reason young people are the poorest generation in 25 years
The same thing applies to us here... I went to college to become a software engineer/computer scientist. I didn't go to find out what I want to do. I knew what I wanted to do.
gibsonje··on The real reason young people are the poorest generation in 25 years
It's extremely easy to criticize other degree/career choices when you're sitting comfy in a VERY desired field. Just because I rolled the dice and liked computers and went down an already well paved path doesn't mean I made "better" choices than someone else. I chose the path of least resistance, to be honest, and at the end of it there happened to be a party waiting.
gibsonje··on First Look at the Rift, Shipping Q1 2016
If Rift's timing is anything like Rift's timing for, well, everything they've done... I think the Rift will be released in 2017.
gibsonje··on GitHub's down?
I don't know what to say other than I disagree.
gibsonje··on GitHub's down?
This is what I don't get. I trust github as a central platform more than hosting my own gitlab in the cloud.

There's a lot of people spreading a holier than thou attitude in this thread.

gibsonje··on Grooveshark Shuts Down
How do you buy an album or song without it being DRM-chained to a particular service? That's my problem with music. I've settled on Spotify for this reason, but I was extremely disappointed to read that I'm probably not contributing in any meaningful way to the less-than-popular artists I listen to.
gibsonje··on Valve shuts down paid mod system after pressure from gamers
There's a lot of other context to the issue. -Mods that depend on other mods -Mod dependencies being removed from Nexus and changed to paid mods on Steam -Mods stealing work from other mods

If you read Gabe's responses he starts poking at the "Wow wow wow, why is this bad?" and learns a few things.

gibsonje··on Valve shuts down paid mod system after pressure from gamers
This little subtopic can't be summed up in a sentence. Valve didn't set the 25% number, and that's the important part. Bethesda opted to take over 40%.
gibsonje··on Apple now rejecting apps with Pebble Smartwatch support
The OP replied in that article's comments saying that their appeal was rejected with a statement that any reference to Pebble in the description had to also be removed.
gibsonje··on Twitter to allow Direct-Messaging anyone
This ended up being false.
gibsonje··on The sad state of sysadmin in the age of containers
I thought this post was overly cynical and full of generalizations. I don't really understand what point is trying to be made here.

"Everybody" "Nobody" "Nobody" "None of" "everything got Windows-ized" every sentence is a broad generalization on top of cynicism so it's hard to find any value in the point trying to be made.

gibsonje··on Is This Justice? Charging an Eighth Grader with a Felony for “Hacking”
This is incompetency of the school network administrators. No crime was committed here.
gibsonje··on Twitter to allow Direct-Messaging anyone
It's opt-in, but enabled by default for all [existing? maybe even new?] accounts.
gibsonje··on Is This Justice? Charging an Eighth Grader with a Felony for “Hacking”
In previous posts A LOT more info was disclosed.

- MANY students had the admin password. It was freely passed around for the students to complete work from home remotely.

- The admin password was the last name of a popular teacher.

- He logged in using the same admin password all the other students use and freely have access to.

gibsonje··on Hamlet – A crossword puzzle game using regular expressions
Edit: Coworker pointed out you can rotate the board to read it better.
gibsonje··on Amazon Home Services
Doesn't google do this same thing?...
gibsonje··on GitHub under ongoing DDoS attack
That wouldn't work here, from what I understand. This attack is only using hosts outside of China, not within.
gibsonje··on Hacker Monthly will publish its final issue 12 months from now
Long time reader, recently created an account...

I don't see downvote or "flag" buttons. The only button available to me is a "^", which I assume is upvote, but without a downvote or flag button it's very out of context... (edit: Yeah, the on-hover is 'upvote' but there's no downvote or flag).

gibsonje··on Why One Programmer Doesn’t Do DevOps Anymore
Small company. We don't have many problems. We have a couple pain points but we fix them over time. When hosts die, it generally doesn't mean anything. There's redundancy in all things. I don't find myself interrupted often.

Previous job had a "Systems" team and a "Database" team. Both were just teams of obstructionists.

"Oh you need something today? Well, if you get a jira ticket made I could look into getting the requirements written up sometime in the next 2 weeks, to get the work assigned out next month."

Not saying that's the norm, but damn I hope I never experience that again.

gibsonje··on Sunglasses That Could Correct Color Blindness
Since you called out green deficiency specifically I think you're one of the few people I've seen actually define their specific colorblindness, instead of just saying "red/green colorblind". I have the same, green deficiency (deuteranopia) and I've read others with it who have tried this had little to no benefit. It's good to see it confirmed again. It's tempting to buy but I would be severely disappointed I think based off everything I've read.
gibsonje··on Nest Protect is a terrible buggy product
I have multiple battery nest protects. I replaced "False alarm" alarms with them when my smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector had multiple 100% false alarms. The protects have not been activated by anything so far. The humidity that would set off my smoke detector before does not set off my protect. I've had no problems with my protects.

gibsonje··on Locust – Testing framework simulating the burstiness of an end user
This seems wrong. Make sure you're following the guides in their documentation (run one locust slave instance per core). But that aside, 200 RPS is way too low for a locust instance. I use locust for loads 100k+ rps, if 200rps per host were my limit I wouldn't be using locust.
gibsonje··on Amazon.com redesign
Not sure about this. I'm on the same network as my boyfriend. Yesterday he pointed out that amazon.com looked different. I'm on my laptop and it's not showing the new design.
