ghiculescu··on Ask HN: Should we bring software dev in-house?
The point is still valid even at that price.
ghiculescu··on Advantages of incompetent management
What is an example of this?
ghiculescu··on Advantages of incompetent management
I took his point to be: some people will always get incredible work done no matter what. Enable them to still get paid well. For everyone else just keep them around for when there is stuff that has to be done, and when there isn’t (most of the time?), let them spin around on their chairs/compensate accordingly.
ghiculescu··on Heroku Postgres is now based on AWS Aurora
What makes RDS better than Aurora?
ghiculescu··on Stuck at sea for years, a sailor's plight highlights a surge in ship abandonment
Why is that better?
ghiculescu··on One-third of Amazon warehouse workers are on food stamps or Medicaid
minimum wage is a state issue , so i’m not sure why the south matters.
ghiculescu··on One-third of Amazon warehouse workers are on food stamps or Medicaid
If it was that simple then this problem would be solved. Clearly most voters (in your opinion) want a higher minimum wage, UBI, and greater corporate taxation. If elected representatives do what their voters want, why are we discussing this?
ghiculescu··on One-third of Amazon warehouse workers are on food stamps or Medicaid
Sure you do. You could buy shares.

It won’t give you much influence in isolation, but I challenge you to show more influence over your elected representatives.

ghiculescu··on One-third of Amazon warehouse workers are on food stamps or Medicaid
But you trust governments to have that morality?
ghiculescu··on Show HN: I built a website to create financial models for any stock online
Why? Anyone who invests based on such obviously wrong numbers shouldn’t be protected from themselves.
ghiculescu··on Tell HN: Ever think of applying to YC? Do it this weekend for S24
Most (all?) countries do this. Consumer banking services will offer free transfers as a loss leader.
ghiculescu··on [dead]
The word Censorship isn’t in the original. It got added.
ghiculescu··on The Ukraine war is ultimately about Poland
That’s a powerful diplomatic argument, and I’m shocked Putin hasn’t reconsidered now you’ve made it.
ghiculescu··on The Ukraine war is ultimately about Poland
Do you think their leaders at the time were fine with this?
ghiculescu··on React has grown beyond its original promise and it's causing more harm than good
Rails
ghiculescu··on Fewer people are buying electric cars in the US
But people have bought EVs despite the lack of public chargers, both in Australia and all over the world, so that’s clearly not the full story.
ghiculescu··on Fewer people are buying electric cars in the US
Why do Australians think EV chargers should be provided by government? Petrol stations aren’t.
ghiculescu··on Australia to ban engineered stone
lol we certainly have lobbying in Australia, they just apparently keep a lower profile than American lobbyists do.
ghiculescu··on My toddler loves planes, so I built her a radar
My toddler has a similar back story (flight hype -> loves planes). This inspired me to finally upgrade my iOS.
ghiculescu··on The first commercial carbon-sucking facility in the US opens in California
Those seem like different goals. Don’t we need both?
ghiculescu··on The first commercial carbon-sucking facility in the US opens in California
People on this technology forum seem skeptical that technology can improve or get cheaper.
ghiculescu··on Ask HN: Was any Starfighter postmortem ever published?
Yeah I think that’s what Starfighter did. And we are discussing how it failed, so…
ghiculescu··on Ask HN: Was any Starfighter postmortem ever published?
That happens too but I think the underlying reasons are simpler.

Everyone involved in hiring should read “The Case Against Education” by Caplan.

ghiculescu··on Ask HN: Was any Starfighter postmortem ever published?
The problem with credentialism is that lots of people with degrees from reputable universities can’t code.

Similarly lots of people with significant industry experience… also can’t code.

ghiculescu··on Texas employment tops 14M as state job growth tops U.S.
My anecdotal observation is the opposite. It seems like since Covid, demand to live in big cities has gone up much faster than before. You can mostly see / feel this in property prices.
ghiculescu··on Looking back on SaaS product strategy
It’s definitely not an exact science! As a developer I feel the same, and as we matured it did slowly get easier to be more precise about what’s worth building.
ghiculescu··on Looking back on SaaS product strategy
No. Feel free to ignore it.
ghiculescu··on Looking back on SaaS product strategy
The specific decision point of “what code are we going to write next week” happens in a betting table: https://basecamp.com/shapeup/2.2-chapter-08
ghiculescu··on Can a worker-owned restaurant work?
No it’s not. You haven’t refuted the claim that starting a restaurant requires momey. You just said having money makes you bad at running a restaurant. Which is silly.
ghiculescu··on Can a worker-owned restaurant work?
That doesn’t follow at all. There’s no reason you can’t be good at both.
