ghempton··on Show HN: EmberScript - Ember.js Infused JavaScript
Can you elaborate on some places where "low-level" javascript is needed?
ghempton··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (April 2013)
Seattle, WA - GroupTalent

Ember.js Developer

ghempton··on Why We Don't Use Heroku
This is simply not true. Chef solo does not require a server.
ghempton··on Why We Don't Use Heroku
You also don't need to ssh into the box with chef...
ghempton··on Why We Don't Use Heroku
The deployment pipeline is a small portion of it. Even capistrano can provide the same.

The problems you describe are definitely real and non-trivial, but Chef helps with this.

Heroku is also not a silver bullet for scaling up.

ghempton··on Why We Don't Use Heroku
It also comes down to how much you value learning new technologies.

I started a project in Rails 4 a few months ago and it took several hours just to get compass working again... but it was still worth it.

ghempton··on Why We Don't Use Heroku
If you have left your heroku app alone for 3 years, you are definitely at risk of getting rooted: https://blog.heroku.com/archives/2013/1/11/rails_security_vu...
ghempton··on Why We Don't Use Heroku
DevOps doesn't imply constant maintenance. A basic configuration on a site with low/constant traffic will probably not require many updates.

If anything, using something like Chef will make it easier to perform those updates if the need actually arises.

ghempton··on Why We Don't Use Heroku
Seems to work for me.
ghempton··on Ask HN: How does an experienced freelancer get work?
I don't think that is necessarily true. Majority of freelancing sites are geared towards overseas outsourcing and portray the value proposition to companies of adding money to their bottom line. This naturally makes it hard for US based developers to make market rate on these sites.

Shameless self-promotion: I am a co-founder of grouptalent.com which is geared towards high-end freelance developers and rates generally trend toward market.

ghempton··on Zynga: forget games, let’s just do viruses
Being as Zynga is very metrics driven, it's funny to think about this in terms of A/B testing: trying variations on design which increase sharing. The optimum will be with when there is no opt-out at all.
ghempton··on Simple -- Announcing Goals
I felt similarly disillusioned. In the fine print there is also an inactivity fee if you don't use your simple account-- feels very counter to their ostensible philosophy.
ghempton··on CoffeeScript CSS
+1. Stylus is really under represented in these conversations. IMO it is the cleanest of the bunch.
ghempton··on 500,000 Requests/Sec – Modern HTTP Servers Are Fast
The ironic part is that his blog is hosted on wordpress.
ghempton··on Psd.js: A Photoshop Document Parser in CoffeeScript
Love the idea and want to use this, but crashed the browser when I tried a simple psd.
ghempton··on JQuery UI vs Kendo UI
The grid comparison of features vs the core jQuery UI module doesn't seem right. Of course a behemoth framework will win out on a feature comparison against one module of a modular framework.
ghempton··on HP open sources Enyo javascript framework from webOS, now cross platform
Ember, unlike backbone, is a declarative framework for defining your UI components.
ghempton··on Show HN: I Created the Inverse of Angry Birds
The level design and artwork are done simultaneously inside of Fireworks. I have an extension which attaches metadata to objects to use in-game. I also rely on states and pages to correspond to animations and levels respectively. I.e. all of the levels of the game are "compiled" from a single fireworks doc with 20 pages, each page corresponding to a level.
ghempton··on Show HN: I Created the Inverse of Angry Birds
I built it myself. It is in the form of a Fireworks extension. I lay out the levels inside of Fireworks and export both the art and the level as a package.

I will open source it eventually.

ghempton··on Show HN: I Created the Inverse of Angry Birds
Everything was done by yours truly in Fireworks. I wrote a custom extension that I use to create both the artwork and the levels inside of Fireworks.
ghempton··on Show HN: I Created the Inverse of Angry Birds
Thanks for the feedback. An iPad 2 was my primary testing device so I surely didn't give the iPhone version the UI love it needs.
ghempton··on Show HN: I Created the Inverse of Angry Birds
Should be everywhere, maybe there is a delay.
ghempton··on Show HN: I Created the Inverse of Angry Birds
Yeah I should have waited until it was indexed before posting.
ghempton··on Show HN: I Created the Inverse of Angry Birds
Yup cocos2d, with a pretty thick custom level editor built on top.
ghempton··on Show HN: I Created the Inverse of Angry Birds
Hopefully I will have time to get around to this someday.
ghempton··on Show HN: I Created the Inverse of Angry Birds
Thanks for all the great feedback. This is a side project that I had been sitting on at 90% completion for months and finally got it out.

As a side note: I need to remember to not publicize newly launched apps until they have been indexed by the app store. It might not show up in the app store search until tomorrow.

ghempton··on Open Source Needs a New UI
Designers live in a different world. Unlike many developers, they depend on proprietary tools (Adobe) and don't interface directly with open source software in a contributive or decision making capacity.
ghempton··on Announcing Amber.js
Amber looks to be getting awesomely close to a CSS/HTML version of Flex.
ghempton··on 10 billion Android Market downloads and counting
I wish you could actually price your apps at $.10
ghempton··on Poll: Devs, Have You Used oDesk or eLance?
As a full disclaimer, I'm a co-founder of grouptalent.com which has a lot of the properties you've described.

Would love to chat with you. gordon at grouptalent.com
