ggrelet··on John Carpenter’s ‘They Live’ was supposed to be a warning
At first I didn’t like the fighting scene. Then I realized that the protagonist said many times that he would never renounce fighting these aliens. That scene, though seemingly corny, is exactly the proof he would do anything. I think that’s’ brilliant!

ggrelet··on Dune, 50 years on: how a science fiction novel changed the world
> It has sold millions of copies, is perhaps the greatest novel in the science-fiction canon and Star Wars wouldn’t have existed without it.

I genuinely believe the Hyperion saga (Dan Simmons) has produced greater novels than Dune. Also, I don’t think implying an Hollywood movie series wouldn’t have existed if not for Dune is a sharp argument to praise how influent it is.

ggrelet··on Tsundoku: The art of buying books and never reading them
Yes, it's at the end of the article:

> One of the most popular interpretations concerned video games, with various people referencing their "vast, untouched software libraries" on game distribution platforms like Steam. And some people even joked the service should rename their annual week of discounting the "Steam Tsundoku Sale". But credit to Ronnie Filyaw of Whomp! comic, who came up with this concise definition [0]

ggrelet··on Ask HN: Why is YC not owning the domain Hacker News.com yet?
It's a great and strong brand, it must certainly have tons of traffic.

It's been registered in 1998 [0] but surely by the time YC could have made an offer to acquire it and redirect its traffic here?
