gfykvfyxgc··on Naomi Wu video demonetized on YouTube
YouTube has no problem with all the “bikini try on” channels.

Hard to see why YouTube would have a problem with Naomi Wu.

gfykvfyxgc··on Ask HN: How do small companies do recruitment?
I love this story.
gfykvfyxgc··on Naomi Wu video demonetized on YouTube
I wonder if such decisions are made by men or women.
gfykvfyxgc··on Tips for Text-based Interviews (2021)
Text based job interviews?

How does this industry continue to come up with such innovative new ways to deeply suck at recruiting?

The “text based interview” is one of the worst ideas I’ve ever heard.

Of course everyone has some grand justification for their bad ideas so I wonder how this terrible idea is justified.

Maybe it’s April 1?

If a company proposes a “text based interview”, id suggest typing “I’m not interested in your company thanks”, and moving on.

gfykvfyxgc··on You Don't Need the Cloud
Totally agree.

Just use virtual machines or colocated servers.

gfykvfyxgc··on Last Windows 11 update changed all default browser settings to Edge
DOS ain’t done till Lotus won’t run.
gfykvfyxgc··on Execution is worthless, ideas are everything
The old contrarian opinion from 37 Signals.
gfykvfyxgc··on Ask HN: Should I even bother with React?
Do what makes you happy …. that’s what makes software development fun.
gfykvfyxgc··on Ask HN: Recommendations for an SMTP Sending Service?
I’m guessing all the major clouds provide this?
gfykvfyxgc··on I moved this blog from Medium, here
If you want people to read your writing, don’t put it in a walled garden.
gfykvfyxgc··on Focalboard open source, self-hosted alternative to Trello, Notion, and Asana
With all respect …. Do people care about self hosted for productivity apps?
gfykvfyxgc··on Archaeologists Find 4k-Year-Old Board Game in Oman
Was the instruction booklet there too?
gfykvfyxgc··on AWS Service Terms: the clause 42.10
Seems reasonable. Fairly standard clause I’d think.
gfykvfyxgc··on DOS on Dope (2010)
Off topic but my favorite editor of all time was the DOS edit.

It was simple and straightforward with keys that made sense.

gfykvfyxgc··on Djokovic to be deported from Australia after court upholds visa cancellation
Djokovic should have joined the end of the queue in waiting for his case to be heard.

How completely fucked up that mega millionaires get their court case heard immediately over the weekend.

gfykvfyxgc··on Ask HN: What do you think of the Wordle guy not monetizing it?
It offends me, as someone who has never succeeded building something people want.

I say that a touch light hearted but it’s kinda true.

gfykvfyxgc··on Asian Boss planted deep blue YouTuber and pretended he was a 'man on the street'
I didn’t interpret what that guy said in the same way you did.
gfykvfyxgc··on Asian Boss planted deep blue YouTuber and pretended he was a 'man on the street'
So why I wonder is this video coming up in our feeds?

Could it be because the CCP want westerners to hear the message of how people in Taiwan actually want to unify with China?

Yes I think so. The CCP know how to get things promoted on social media.

gfykvfyxgc··on Asian Boss planted deep blue YouTuber and pretended he was a 'man on the street'
Boom - all credibility lost - it’s just a scam, another CCP shill.

I actually watched this video the other day, and I remember this interviewee and I remember being surprised at how pro China the people of Taipei are.

Clearly Asian Boss has served its CCP masters well because I was convinced this was real and not fake CCP propaganda.

gfykvfyxgc··on Edina Minnesota latest suburb to roll out homeowner surveillance camera program
Maybe close cooperation with the deeply corrupt and unjust police makes you complicit in the outcomes.
gfykvfyxgc··on Dev corrupts NPM libs 'colors' and 'faker', breaking thousands of apps
I don’t understand the mindset of open source developers who dedicate significant time energy and life to free software, unless there’s a tangible, quantifiable advantage to doing so.

That advantage may well be indirect such as reputational or learning. I just don’t grasp why people do it for nothing, to the advantage of large companies.

gfykvfyxgc··on James Webb is fully deployed
I’m glad we got this good news. I would have been truly depressed if it had failed.
gfykvfyxgc··on My Many Girlfriends
In the early days of IT there was the concept that the best developers were strange, hard to get along with prima Donna’s.
gfykvfyxgc··on Ask HN: How to continue to be gracious about the good fortune of rich friends?
That’s where I’m at.
gfykvfyxgc··on Ask HN: How to continue to be gracious about the good fortune of rich friends?
How would you feel if today, at your age, you had $0 and no house?
gfykvfyxgc··on Ask HN: How to continue to be gracious about the good fortune of rich friends?
Yes all my friends are good friends, often for more than 30 years. Kind people who care and value our friendship. It just happens that they’re now becoming very wealthy - its made none of them less kind or good people.

The only possible thing they could be said to do “wrong” is not hide their good fortune, nor understand that telling me they just made $1,000,000 makes me feel bad, not welcoming me into their homes.

gfykvfyxgc··on Arm-Based 128-Core Ampere CPUs Cost a Fraction of x86 Price
ARM has a big problem …. compatibility.

X86 absolutely destroys ARM in the software front. Give me an x86 cpu and I can run any version of linux on it with wide hardware support.

Give me a random ARM computer, you’re lucky if you can get it to boot.

You’re even luckier if the ARM CPU manufacturer releases documentation about how their chips work …. They prefer to keep inner workings secret.

gfykvfyxgc··on Why Agile Sucks for Building Quality Software
>> Rewarding continuous delivery of software without penalizing rework or refactoring creates no incentive for anyone to produce maintainable software.

Rework and refactoring are where the quality gets put back, after technical debt was incurred earlier in the project.

gfykvfyxgc··on Tell HN: Thanks to YouTube, my 12 year old asked for a knife for his birthday
The father was an imbecile for giving a child a knife.
gfykvfyxgc··on Baffling neurological illness affects growing number of young adults
Seems obviously BMAA but clearly the government don’t want to say so because it will destroy the lobster industry.

We should all be terrified of BMAA and it’s here because of climate change.

https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2019/01/190124110834.h...

Climate change is making the oceans and fresh water toxic and very deadly. We’ve seriously fucked the earth.

Have you ever heard weasel words more reminiscent of a cover up:

“ But experts nonetheless warn that testing itself is also more difficult than the public realizes.

While some medical tests can provide quick and definite results other types of investigation require far more work.

“What people are talking about really amounts to a full research investigation, because then we know what we’re looking for precisely,” said the federal scientist who was familiar with both the cluster and the testing process. “Right now we don’t have a way to interpret simple data that you might get when testing a person’s brain tissue for a particular toxin. For example, how much are ‘elevated’ levels of a neurotoxin compared to the rest of the public? And when does that become a cause for concern?”

The scientist said teams are ready to begin the research, but “New Brunswick has specifically told us not to go forward with that work”.”
