gettodachoppa··on Posters Promoting Illegal Drug Use Pop Up in Downtown San Francisco

This tells you everything you need to know about the sort of people who put up these posters.

At this point, what isn't white supremacy? "I got a bad beat while playing poker, this is white supremacy manifest!"

gettodachoppa··on Learn Modern C++
I know you think this sounds like a good reason, but all I can think is that C++'s continues its mutation into a new language and adding to the developer's cognitive load, all for the purpose of a minor performance optimization. In what is already a very performant language.

As usual, C++'s priorities are wrong for anyone who's not writing an OS, web browser, game engine, or otherwise rare type of project.

gettodachoppa··on Threads is blocking servers on the Fediverse. Here's how we unblocked ourselves.
This seems fair, unless these blocklists are used to bully neutral servers into adopting your blocklist?

Let's say there's a federation of bully admins who dislike Server Wrongthink. There's a moderate server Moderate which they're federated with, but Moderate does not block Wrongthink.

In this scenario, will Moderate get blocked too? Or only Wrongthink?

gettodachoppa··on Putting the "J" in the RPG, Part 3: Playing Final Fantasy VII
>Few games inspired the unexpected wonder and scale that FF7 did. 8 did a little. 9 hit the mark. So did X. Everything after was kinda of numb

The FF games you loved were created by the two talents at the heart of FF: series creator Hironobu Sakaguchi and legendary composer Nobuo Uematsu. They left after X. I think the soul of the franchise left when these two did.

I played FF12 about 12 years ago and I couldn't name you a single character (or remember their personality/story) or hum a single music track. I played FF7 25 years ago and there's a few music tracks I still remember, and I can name most of the characters (though it helps that they're popular in gaming culture).

There's a few darker JRPG games. Check out the Shadow Hearts series. It has a horror vibe/setting.
gettodachoppa··on Putting the "J" in the RPG, Part 3: Playing Final Fantasy VII
May I ask what you don't like about it? It eases you in with a tutorial, there's a lot of story and dialog for the "movie game" generation, the Sphere Grid is mostly locked so you can't cripple yourself by picking bad upgrades (unless you played one of the remakes and picked an open grid?), it's the usual high production values FF title...

FFX to me is the pinnacle of the FF turn-based battle system. That said, it IS over 20 years old.

I think there's some game genres which, if you didn't grow up on them, you might not enjoy them. Kinda like how you have to eat sushi a few times before you start liking it. I think turn-based JRPGs are aimed at people who enjoyed those games in the 25 years ago. The Metroidvania genre, even more so.

>Only to someone with no sense of scale. Again, you can do that. But you expand the definition of authoritarianism to cover just about any human activity.

So start referring to America as "softer authoritarians than China" instead of this charade you put up now. Then people would be less miffed by your hypocrisy.

Everything political that comes out of America is such self-serving slop that I don't understand how anyone above age 30 buys it. When mass-censorship and consensus manufacturing is enacted on mainstream social media (oh sorry, when the US does it it's just "the algorithm" and "alignment", not a mean evil dictatorship), when Americans are forbidden from having a chance to vote for their preferred president in Colorado, when you wage a proxy war against Russia to the last Ukrainian man, when you get Ukraine to ban all opposition political parties, when you bomb countries for decades in the Middle East, every time it's done in the name of democracy.

>Whew! There's a lot you need to unpack here. There is no place ruled by "minorities." You might want to take some time to reflect on what your word choice says about how you view other people in the world.

In your haste to virtue signal with the bingo card you brought from Twitter, you either forgot what the word 'minority' actually means, or forgot that there absolutely were/are countries ruled by groups that were ethnic minorities in that country. For example Rwanda up to the mid 20th century was run by the Tutsis who were only 15% of the population. What am I supposed to use to describe them, if not 'minority'?

>The premise of this is invalid. Why do you incorrectly think that there exists a kind of arithmetic where bad deed in the past + good deed in the past = net good ? Additionally, why are you taking all of this so personally?

Since people like you keep bringing bad deeds from the past, it's only fair that good deeds be brought up too. I personally do not judge anyone by the history of their ancestors. But evidently you do (or you wouldn't be going on about historical racism), so within your worldview, I expect you to be consistent and not a hypocrite. If you bring up the bad, people can bring up the good. Simple as.

I can't take it personally, if only because I'm not white and come from the other side of the world. But I have a sense of justice and I dislike seeing people treated worse than others because of the color of their skin. Which is what I think you're doing with your targetted snipes at white people, which I strongly doubt you do at other ethnicities with the same shortcomings.

>you say "the world owes all of this to white men" without realizing a couple of key facts. First, due to systematic racicm, blah blah, women, excuses excuses

I don't get it, do you agree with that factual statement or not? I see you're giving excuses for why that fact is a fact, but I'd like to see if you still have a foot in reality or not, by seeing you say "yes I agree with that fact, we owe most of our advances to white men" or "I disagree". If you disagree, then please let me know why, so I can flip your argument against you to absolve current white people for whatever original sin you think they're guilty of.

Also, what about in non-European countries? Why didn't any of those countries invent the sort of things that save billions of lives?

>I fear that you are falling into the trap of believing that there's any genuine, natural validity to the artificial construct that is race. Race does not exist in nature

Although I don't treat anyone differently due to their race, there are definitely biological differences between different ethnicities, and anyone who claims there isn't, even if they are so-called distinguished American """scientists""", is simply trying to gaslight me for political correctness' sake. I roundly reject appeal to authority when it comes to anything even slightly infected by American humanities majors, because those professors aren't doing science, they're doing politics and careerism.

Otherwise how do you explain that Olympic sprinting is dominated specifically by Jamaicans and West Africans?

I certainly don't go around talking about white men's accomplishments normally. It's only when I see white people under attack for ancestral sins that I use this counter-argument. Basically you set the tone of the discussion and I counter-punched. If you had acted like a pleasant normal person, and didn't try the woke religion's favorite activity that is dunking on whitey, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

gettodachoppa··on The teenager who lives like it's the 1940s
>Fact: it was much harder in Western societies if you were not white, straight, male, and Christian. This isn't a point for debate. It's not an opinion. You can either accept the fact, as uncomfortable as it is, and move on. Or you can be willfully ignorant to avoid feeling uncomfortable.

It may be a fact (I question the "much"), but is it a meaningful fact? Or just a dumb rhetorical device to bully and silence people for perceived crimes made by their ancestors?

1. Was there any country in the 1940s, ANYWHERE in the world, where outsiders/visitors were treated the same as the native majority? And for countries ruled by minorities, was there one where the people in power treated people of other races better than they treated the people of their own race?

2. If white men need to be loudly and constantly reminded of the sins of their ancestors (that every other society is guilty of but no one talks about it), then is it OK if white men loudly and constantly remind you about the accomplishments of their ancestors that the whole world benefits from today? Electricity, vaccines, antibiotics, computers, the Internet, trains, planes, and automobiles, TVs, air conditioning... Can you admit that the world owes all of this to white men? That their advances in medicine and agriculture saved billions of lives?

...or would that be an "uncomfortable truth"?

gettodachoppa··on EU opens proceedings against X over efforts to combat information manipulation
> If US tech firms just state that they will ignore EU regulation whilst continuing to serve requests from EU IP ranges, then what?

Then they are unable to take money from EU businesses to show ads to EU users.

gettodachoppa··on The pro-Israel information war
What you call Israel is their land where their people lived until European Jews decided to emigrate en masse 100 years ago. There was only 25k Jews in modern day Israel before WW1, then Britain forcefully turned it a "jewish homeland" to get the Rothschilds on their side during the war. Basically typical western disregard for anyone who isn't white.

They shouldn't have to move in with their neighbors.

"hot women", not quite, they're just not ugly.

Women are socially allowed to use artificial means to greatly improve their appearance. I'm referring to makeup and expensive hair treatments. Women from upper-middle or upper classes have even more of an advantage in using these. So if you're a thin woman, unless you were unlucky enough to be born disfigured, you're a single afternoon away of looking like a movie star.

If Sam Altman was socially allowed to wear makeup and a wig, you'd call him a heartthrob.

gettodachoppa··on U.S. states sue Instagram owner for making social media addictive to kids
What stops you from making this argument to allow kids to smoke cigs? That's kinda how this is. Imagine if every kid smoked, and if you didn't want your kid to smoke too, they become a social outcast with all the mental issues that come with it.

Society steps in to regulate harmful/predatory behaviors all the time, even between consenting adults (let alone children, even if their parents play along). Libertarianism just doesn't work for kids. (I think it doesn't even work for adults, personally)

gettodachoppa··on .NET 8
It doesn't need to be 100% perfect. Just 99%. Don't let perfect be the enemy of great.

I write Qt GUIs for Linux+Windows, and no Windows user can tell it's not "native" (not that there's a native Windows look anymore, what with MS being schizophrenic about scrapping the UI framework and starting a new one everytime a new PM wants attention, only the classic widget look associated with Windows is still the 2000/XP/7 is recognizable).

Qt apps are super performant, and write once, run anywhere for 99% of GUIs anyone wants to create.

OSX users might be the only one that complain, but they're a tiny minority of users, and it's good enough in most cases, with fantastic performance to shut up the doubters.

Electron apps are hideous, bloated, and slow, relative to the Qt apps I write. I'm only held back by C++ being a shitty archaic language/ecosystem, and if .NET offered an alternative I'd jump ship immediately, that's why I'm so disappointed it's an afterthought.

P.S. Languages designed for "hypertext markup" are not meant to create rich UIs, and can never compete with a native framework. Everything in the JS world to create rich applications is a hack and you can see it in the code and the endless churn of frameworks. When I write something like QML, the intent is clear. When I look at the JS UI frameworks people are hacking hideous HTML templates and conditional logic, list iteration, etc in HTML templates. And nearly every JS UI framework project is written by 1-2 intermediate devs with comparatively little API design talent, who inevitably break backwards compatibility within a year or two.

gettodachoppa··on .NET 8
> .NET has been held down by the image of its early days, but it has become a pure joy to work with recently

People have been saying that for the past 4 years.

As someone who's never used .NET but develops embedded apps for Linux, I had high hopes for it become the best story for crossplatform development, it still feels like the crossplatform is held by ductape. It's still Xamarin for mobile, Avalonia (a 1-man project) for desktop Linux as the only choice, 2 confusing different UI frameworks (WinUI vs MAUI). They don't take this as seriously as I'd hoped.

When they made it open-source and cross-platform 6-7 years ago, they should've thrown enough manpower that within 3 years (or even 2, this is Microsoft with endless coffers) it was unquestionably the best development option for nearly every scenario.

Additionally, it's my understanding they don't release proper debuggers on Linux? I'm not gonna install Visual Studio just to debug my .NET app bro.

gettodachoppa··on Yes, Ubuntu is withholding security patches for some software

What a naive soul, thinking anyone in the JS world cares even remotely about API stability. xyz-1 will become obsolete within 2.5 weeks and the dev will tell the users to deal with it. You can't bring accountability into that culture.

gettodachoppa··on Ask HN: Are there valid Google Search alternatives?
I stopped using Google 5 years ago. The combination of SEO blogspam dominating the first page results, and the mass surveillance they engage in, made me want to change. I don't miss it, it has many worthy replacements.

My thoughts on the search engines things I tried:

0. Bing: pretty much the same as Google, I stopped using it for privacy reasons. I'd use it if I was a Linux user and MS didn't have my Windows activity to cross-reference Bing data with.

1. DuckDuckGo: was a great alternative, until I found out last year they censor search results for political reasons (downranking/delisting "Russian misinformation"). I dropped them then.

2. Brave: pretty good most of the time, the one I trust the most for privacy, but too many counterculture sites not listed. Like you search for a meme and the results are not some major sites. Is fine otherwise.

3. Yandex: great search results but I stopped using it because despite only doing 10-15 searches a day, I trip their bot detection (I use Firefox configured to resist fingerprinting, uBlock Origin, etc). If I was your basic b*tch "Chrome user watching 1000 ads a day", I'd stick to this.

Google remains the best one for location-aware search, such as local businesses.
