getpost··on On YouTube’s recommendation system
I always watch logged-out. (Occasionally on iOS I will be unknowingly logged-in, not sure how that happens. I log out if I notice I am logged-in.) YouTube seems to maintain an identity for me, and auto-constructs playlists using past items viewed. Recommendations appear to relate to past viewing.

I’m uncertain on how cookies are maintained. Are these Safari cookies behind the scenes?

My point is, contrary to GP’s claim, there is some mechanism for viewing history even if it is turned off.

getpost··on Robert Sapolsky on Depression (2009)
"Chemical imbalance" is not only a marketing phrase. Lots of people are willing to receive treatment for a "chemical imbalance," but aren't willing to engage in therapy, or admit they're depressed. This was very common in the last couple decades prior to the turn of the century, when mental illness was much more stigmatized than it is now.
getpost··on Ask HN: Whats your ideal PhD workflow
Not what you're asking, but my ideal phd workflow is to complete an open research problem as a homework assignment, then turn it in as a thesis.

"In 1939, a misunderstanding brought about surprising results. Near the beginning of a class, Professor Neyman wrote two problems on the blackboard. Dantzig arrived late and assumed that they were a homework assignment. According to Dantzig, they "seemed to be a little harder than usual", but a few days later he handed in completed solutions for both problems, still believing that they were an assignment that was overdue.[4][6] Six weeks later, an excited Neyman eagerly told him that the "homework" problems he had solved were two of the most famous unsolved problems in statistics.[2][4] He had prepared one of Dantzig's solutions for publication in a mathematical journal.[7] This story began to spread and was used as a motivational lesson demonstrating the power of positive thinking. Over time, Dantzig's name was removed, and facts were altered, but the basic story persisted in the form of an urban legend and as an introductory scene in the movie Good Will Hunting.[6]

Dantzig recalled in a 1986 interview in the College Mathematics Journal, "A year later, when I began to worry about a thesis topic, Neyman just shrugged and told me to wrap the two problems in a binder and he would accept them as my thesis."[8]"

getpost··on I Was Paralyzed by Severe Depression. Then Came Ketamine
If by "anecdotal," you mean personal stories, not medical studies, that's no longer true. There are many studies comparing psychedelics with conventional treatments for depression and PTSD (eg below). Psychedelics have been repeatedly shown to work faster, 'better,' and provide longer-lasting relief than conventional treatments. Indeed, some studies selected treatment-resistant cases, so results apply to cases in which mainstream treatments have already failed.

Additional monitoring and analysis are always needed, as with any medical treatment. Depression can be a fatal illness, so avoiding effective treatment until the field is more "mature" may cost lives.

getpost··on The Expanse UI Design
I was inspired by the transparent 3D displays. It looked like exactly what I'd want.

I can't think which episodes, but there's are a couple scenes where detective Miller is looking at his phone in 2D mode, and he says, "Go 3D." In one scene, he interacts with the 3D projection, reorienting it. In another scene, invoking the 3D display makes it possible for everyone in the room to discuss the projection.

I'd love to know how these effects were done. And, when can I have one of those phones?

getpost··on Rich people do have trouble understanding what it's like to be poor
In practice, a lot of bad choices aren't truly volitional; they are mainly the result of conditioning. Repeated bad choices reflect a reduced capacity to learn, which is a kind of disability.

It's annoying and costly that so many people make these bad choices, but I think we still have the obligation to care for each other. I expect to make at least some bad choices and I may need help.

But usually, nobody can help you as much as you can help yourself, so it's a good idea to arrange things so that people can increase their own resourcefulness and help themselves.

Be grateful for how lucky you are.

I agree on the practical level, which is pertinent here.

It is possible to experience non-dual consciousness in high concentration states. [EDIT: For many, this experience is a milestone in psychospiritual development, which undermines the habit of dichotomous thinking.] Awareness and perception aren’t the same thing. Way, way off the subject, but your main point stands, be mindful of priors.

getpost··on Fierce Nerds
Clarity is about seeing how things are, not how you've chosen to divide things up.

(I added this as an edit to my other reply, but it seems the edit is lost.)

getpost··on Fierce Nerds
This is a deep topic worthy of an essay, the kind of essay pg might write! The concise reply is, when you catch yourself in dichotomous thinking, you should assume you have misunderstood or oversimplified.

Sometimes you have to go with your misunderstanding or oversimplification to make a decision or to make progress, but keep in mind you are doing so based on beliefs which are unlikely to correspond to reality.

It's striking that so many mental health difficulties are characterized by dichotomous thinking. [1]

Rationality itself can be profitably critiqued at the meta-level.[2] So, don't be an asshole, unless you need to be. Do you see the world as consisting of assholes and non-assholes? How does that feel? What are the advantages of that view? What are the disadvantages? Is considering that question worth your time?

getpost··on Fierce Nerds
Since pg's essay is of a psychoanalytic nature, I'll reply in a psychoanalytic frame, for the sake of conversation, not criticism. [Protip: never psychoanalyze anyone! This likely applies even to psychoanalysts.]

During the last year or two pg has written more than a few essays and tweets which appear to be of a defensive nature. People like him contribute more than other people, it's alright to to be fierce, can't speak the "truth," etc.

Whenever there is dichotomous thinking, cognition has moved away from clarity. If it were me, I'd be asking myself, What is being defended? (This kind of question can be a multi-decade inquiry.)

Although most of us are easily baited into self-justification or self-promotion, I think going down that path it is ultimately a distraction from doing real work and knowing who you are.

Two obscure features of the Lisa that weren't retained on the Mac (IIRC):

Pixels on the Lisa were not square. Tall rectangular pixels made for better font rendering.

The Lisa had virtual memory? Not sure about that, but there was a neat feature that trapped stack overflows. The OS could expand the stack with the overflow trap was triggered.

getpost··on Peak non-creepy dating pool
It's much worse than the article suggests. The article doesn't explain why people don't marry. People who marry before middle-age often have secure attachment styles. The dating pool from middle age on consists primarily of people with insecure attachment styles. Relationships with insecurely attached people are especially problematic. If you're not married, but want to be, look for widows or widowers with secure attachment styles, and work on developing secure attachment.

getpost··on After working at Google, I’ll never let myself love a job again
Assuming the facts are as stated, Google's handling of this issue is inept. When there is a substantive conflict between employees, the employer needs to take immediate action, within 24 hours or less.

For example, the complainant or the supervisor should have been assigned to work in a different location, or transferred to another project. This can be done with some finesse, so as not make the reason obvious to others. This is the right thing to do if harassment is occurring as described, or even if the complainant is making a false accusation.

Given that the complaint was sustained, it would be interesting to know Google's experience as to whether supervisors' behavior changes or continues.

getpost··on Trapped priors as a basic problem of rationality
> I wonder if it's the equivalent of making trauma victims describe the traumatic event in detail; an attempt to give higher weight to the raw experience pathway compared to the prior pathway.

> The other promising source of hope is psychedelics.

For me, what this part if the essay points to is that everyone needs to do their own work, in whatever context, and there's no getting around that.

Experts, authorities, and managers need to find the line between facilitating a process and doing the process themselves. You can't make anyone believe anything or do anything. You can only hope to facilitate the conditions where helpful beliefs and accomplishments arise.

I hope this is one significant cultural shift during my lifetime. The 20th century was about creating expertise and giving that expertise authority, which is just another expression of the dominator paradigm.

getpost··on Google to stop selling ads based on your specific web browsing
Even though Google is being investigated or sued in several jurisdictions regarding its data collection practices, I think this change is down to Apple. Google can fight governments using the legal system indefinitely, but Apple can and did just decide that better disclosures were required. YouTube was recently updated on the app store, but gmail etc have not been updated in months.

getpost··on Cross-Database Queries in SQLite
I'm using datasette[0] and sqlite-utils[1] on replit[2] for a project, which unfortunately I can't share for the time being. I've been very productive, and the low learning curve on this setup makes it easy for others to use and modify what I've done.

I expect to have time to make a demo datasette project available on replit (and github) 'soon.'

I'm so grateful for @simonw 's work on datasette and sqlite-utils! These packages are beautifully designed and documented, and they work so well! Thank you very much @simonw! EDIT: Of course, I am also grateful for sqlite, one of the best things ever written, not to mention this 'license:[3]'
