georgiecasey··on Google’s New Union Is Already Addressing Political Issues
How come you always hear this kind of stuff from Google but not a peep from the other FAANGS, especially Apple.
georgiecasey··on Look Up Unknown Phone Numbers Using Facebook Reset Password
This was great in my single days to look up random numbers you'd taken down in your phone after a night of drinking
georgiecasey··on FFmpeg is 20 years old today
Doesn't the H264 codec used by ffmpeg come from the VideoLan/VLC team?

so... cheating?

georgiecasey··on A Beginner's Garden of Chess Openings (2002)
> What got me playing over 1700 (lichess rating grin) were two things:

On what time limit? I'm ~1700 on Rapid but ~1400 on Blitz. I find you need to play a lot of games to get good at quick time limits.

georgiecasey··on A Beginner's Garden of Chess Openings (2002)
> Below 1700 or so

On what rating system? USCF? Lichess? Chess.com?

georgiecasey··on Being good at coding competitions correlates negatively with job performance
Ah cool, I'm playing some now, pretty nifty! The puzzles I knew back in the 90s were very contrived.
georgiecasey··on Being good at coding competitions correlates negatively with job performance
Chess puzzles just never have realistic positions that you'd encounter in a real game so I can see why it wouldn't help you in games.
georgiecasey··on U.S. Treasury, Commerce Depts. Hacked Through SolarWinds Compromise
> How is this NOT an act of war?

So you want bombing to start over this? I don't.

georgiecasey··on A former Uber engineer's disaster story
The vast majority of apps are UI, CRUD, business logic and other things where native code (as in compiled C/C++) is just overkill and makes things more complicated. The few exceptions seem to be the fields you listed.
georgiecasey··on A former Uber engineer's disaster story
the difference is people actually need to use the Uber app /s

I started reading the intro to that Show Stopper book and can't stop. Great stuff, thanks
georgiecasey··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (December 2020)
That's a crazy good salary!
georgiecasey··on Show HN: Stats of 'How is hiring' threads
I just came to Hackers News because I suspect there's way less mobile dev jobs than any others and found this post on algolia search. It's exactly what I wanted! Great little site. And just as I thought, Kotlin and Swift are near the bottom.
georgiecasey··on How to Escape a Sinking Ship
I never plan to be on a ship so I don't need this advice. But I've watched countless videos on how to escape a sinking car.
georgiecasey··on Reddit Claims 52M Daily Users, Revealing a Key Figure for Social-Media Platforms
I love RIF as well. It's so simple and straightforward but with all the features of the website. It seems be well down the list of Android app in popularity though, I don't know why.
georgiecasey··on Salesforce is in talks to buy Slack
slack website or slack electron app?
georgiecasey··on Salesforce is in talks to buy Slack
JIRA is the slowest website I use in current year. If it was a consumer site like Youtube or Twitter, I'd long stop visiting. You can feel the gears slowly turning whenever you click something. When I click the wrong button I get that pang of anxiety like you used to get when you accidentally opened Photoshop back in the day and had to wait the 20 seconds for it to load.
georgiecasey··on Sierra was captured, then killed, by an accounting fraud
Usually after Googling with the letters and some context I can figure out most acronyms but I've failed on this one. What's TFA?
georgiecasey··on Chess’s Cheating Crisis
I used to cheat on chess.com. It started as a small bit of cheating here and there, just checking every now and then if the move I was going to make was the best. Of course, the computer always had a better move and then I examine the line and told myself I probably would have thought of that! Like a drug, it escalated and I was checking moves all the time. I was never caught but I was ashamed and just stopped playing. Actually, more than ashamed, cheating took all the joy out of it as it felt like a job, switching tabs, and you don't get the dopamine hit when you think of a great line yourself. I uninstalled scid vs pc and opened a lichess account and never cheated on that. Though lichess tells me loads of opponents I've played have been banned for cheating. I never suspect a thing.
georgiecasey··on Chess’s Cheating Crisis
It was confusing. You'd think they'd point that in the article.
georgiecasey··on WordPress's Matt in debate with Netlify's Matt
> but if I have a friend who wants a site and I don't want to ever touch it for them

I did this for a few friends, hosted them on my server, set up Wordpress. Worked for some but most found even Wordpres too complicated. I sent to them to Squarespace and they're happy with that, albeit paying a hefty enough monthly fee after the initial trial period. Not my problem though! washing my hands

> In 2013, the jailbreaking days of iOS were in full effect.

I thought jailbreaking was basically over by 2013

georgiecasey··on I lost €4k in a Facebook scam
I'd guess it's a fake oauth screen as well. I coded one of the first (I think) Tinder auto likers for Android back in 2013, and the only way I could do it was get the real facebook username and password and log into Tinder on the phone in the background. I just put up a fake Oauth HTML page in a webview and saved the login, with a disclaimer of course, but nearly everybody ignored it. I was surprised how easy it all was.
georgiecasey··on The cost of 1GB of mobile data in 228 countries (Feb 2020)
Not only that, but at peak times in rural areas where people use mobile broadband as their main connection, Three internet slows to a crawl. I suspect it's the backhaul from the mobile mast but I'm not sure.

That's what's always missing from these tests, reliability. It's more important than data cap and speeds.

georgiecasey··on Tampa teen accused of being ‘mastermind’ behind Twitter hack
See it's all a matter of opinion. I personally don't really care about online privacy and GDPR just gets in my way. I know that's not a very popular opinion on this site but it's the way I feel.
georgiecasey··on Tampa teen accused of being ‘mastermind’ behind Twitter hack
And I don't blame the site at all. Another stupid rule from the EU preventing me from reading articles.
georgiecasey··on The Eastland disaster killed more passengers than the Titanic and the Lusitania
I find it much more newsworthy to hear of civilians being purposely killed by people in pursuit of their political aims than a disease where 80% of the deaths are people over 65
georgiecasey··on An update on our security incident
I just don't buy it. This guy or girl managed to get a job at Twitter but was willing to sell access to underground hackers for a bit of extra cash and expected no blowback? When the hackers were instructing the employee to post these tweets on behalf of Barack Obama and Joe Biden, did the employee not wonder if this could go wrong for him?
georgiecasey··on An update on our security incident
For sure. And how did the hackers access the Twitter backend from an unknown IP? Surely Twitter has that locked down. My guess is the hackers managed to gain access to laptops of remote support staff and controlled them with Teamviewer type software. Going remote for covid might have made this all possible.
