georgeburdell··on Meta employees protest against mouse tracking tech at US offices
I don’t know why you think Meta accumulated most of its Chinese engineers through H1B. It’s top tier pay so most people move up to them from elsewhere.
georgeburdell··on Meta employees protest against mouse tracking tech at US offices
The 5 Americans left at Meta have had enough
georgeburdell··on Using Claude Code: The unreasonable effectiveness of HTML
I use Markdown + plugins and one of the Git providers to maintain software contracts with other teams that I can’t trust to do the right thing. It has the benefits of having readable diffs and being maintainable by a human, if needed. HTML as the author acknowledges does not make readable diffs.

Markdown remains great because the other side is just going to use Claude to do their work anyway, and I can use Claude to verify their work meets my specifications.

georgeburdell··on Singapore introduces caning for boys who bully others at school
That's my personal experience growing up in a suburban area in the South (edit: in the 90s)
georgeburdell··on Singapore introduces caning for boys who bully others at school
Middle America peaks in High School. Local games are televised and commentated even during the regular season. The TV series Friday Night Lights is a reasonable reference as an outsider
georgeburdell··on DeepClaude – Claude Code agent loop with DeepSeek V4 Pro
I embrace it at this point. It ends all the shilling of vibe coded tools at work that I have endured over the past year. Everyone can now make their own tools with zero obligation to coordinate beyond shared hardware resources
georgeburdell··on AI's economics don't make sense
No employer is telling their employees to use tokens thoughtfully. They might even have token usage leaderboards. One of my team’s agents runs on Opus 4.6 for a fairly narrowly defined scope of a few MCPs and skills. But everyone’s getting their promos and bonuses based on this alone. Next year we’ll get another bonus when we save $1000/day by switching it to Qwen 32B on a Mac Studio

georgeburdell··on The quiet resurgence of RF engineering
4 out of the 5 FAANGs hire RF engineers so… now?
georgeburdell··on If you stop hiring juniors, your senior engineers own you
The missing ending to this article is when companies whine for more immigration because they didn’t invest in the future to make sure a talent pipeline still existed locally.
georgeburdell··on Asahi Linux Progress Linux 7.0
I really hope this project continues to gain momentum. Apple Hardware + Linux is the least fscked OS running on the best hardware. MacOS continues to be a tire fire with endless bugs and churn between versions.
georgeburdell··on Acetaminophen vs. ibuprofen
I went from introvert only-child to married with kids. As they hit daycare, I was perpetually riddled with disease for about 15 months. I still had to take care of the kids though, so I was liberally taking Ibuprofen. At some point, I started to get horrible heartburn. I tried all kinds of dietary restrictions until I realized it was probably the Ibuprofen. Now, if I take even one pill, the heartburn comes back. I switched to Acetaminophen and found it was much more effective at reducing fever with no apparent side effects.
georgeburdell··on Ancient DNA reveals pervasive directional selection across West Eurasia [pdf]
And yet you are also likely to argue “weather is not climate”. Differences in population characteristics of all kinds have massive societal implications and we should lean into addressing them.
georgeburdell··on We spoke to the man making viral Lego-style AI videos for Iran
Just annotating this as the Iranian regime’s talking point
georgeburdell··on We spoke to the man making viral Lego-style AI videos for Iran
It’s really bizarre to me that, even before the war, the mainstream western media ignored the 30k protesters getting massacred in January. They have been using kid gloves with the Iranian regime for some time, like this article exemplifies.
georgeburdell··on Tech job relocation market is recovering. The competition is growing faster
Given the civil unrest during the Covid lockdowns, I’d say robust domestic employment is good policy
georgeburdell··on One Brain to Query: Wiring a 60-Person Company into a Single Slack Bot
The article mentions that there’s an identification process and that at least some data has access control. What were you expecting?
georgeburdell··on Midlife Sleep Irregularity Linked to Higher Risk of Major Cardiac Events
I wonder what "irregularity" means. It seems they didn't define this clearly. Are we talking about few hours or is this a weekly night shift flip flop.
georgeburdell··on More Americans Are Breaking into the Upper Middle Class
I can’t read the article, but I hope their definition of upper middle class adjusts for the steep inflation in housing. If my family knew how much I made, approximately the top 1% of incomes, they’d think I live a fantastically luxurious lifestyle. In reality, I live in the same kind of 3 bed 2 bath house I grew up because houses are now 5x more expensive.
georgeburdell··on How many products does Microsoft have named 'Copilot'?
Reminds me of the 2010s when IBM called everything Watson
georgeburdell··on March heat in American west has left snowpack at record-low levels
California peak snowpack is historically April 1.
georgeburdell··on AI for American-produced cement and concrete
Wrong day to release this. I had to read halfway through the release before realizing it’s legitimate.
georgeburdell··on Anatomy of the .claude/ folder
In my own group, agentic coding made sharing and collaboration go out the window because Claude will happily duplicate a bunch of code in a custom framework
georgeburdell··on NASA to spend $20B on moon base after cancelling orbiting station
Gateway seemed to be pretty roundly panned by space experts, including a number of former astronauts, notably Buzz Aldin. Still, any change at this point is a death sentence for the U.S.’s lead in Space Race 2.0. The space industry (outside of SpaceX) is known for being a retirement community. Meanwhile, the Chinese are humming along working 996 while getting little press over here.
georgeburdell··on Apple Business
One of the last great consumer companies is going B2B
georgeburdell··on Iran launched unsuccessful attack on UK's Diego Garcia
The fact that it was unsuccessful does not make it any less worrying. Iran was a regional problem before the war, but this new escalation shows they’re a threat to the entire world. They might have previously had a chance at a Vietnam or perhaps a Korea-style stalemate
georgeburdell··on An industrial piping contractor on Claude Code [video]
From what I have observed in my team, the opposite is occurring. Everyone is just making their own software because the barriers are so low. There is a lot less sharing and coordination going on, and the bottleneck moved to having the hardware available to run it all, so now we’re spending a lot more money on compute.
georgeburdell··on Meta will shut down VR Horizon Worlds access June 15
Considering other mega corps would either hoard the cash or increase dividends, the fact that any money went to engineers is a win. Saying the money would be better spent funding startups does not reflect any real possibility.
georgeburdell··on Meta will shut down VR Horizon Worlds access June 15
Just because the end concept was useless doesn’t mean the individual pieces don’t have value. Meta’s loose wallet probably kickstarted the work of dozens of smaller companies in the hardware space whose work can be parlayed into other areas.
georgeburdell··on Meta will shut down VR Horizon Worlds access June 15
As an engineer I love that Zuck likes to throw his money around. He has been one of the big reasons for SWE salary inflation over the past 15 years. We should be thankful that not every company is relentlessly cost cutting
