georgeburdell··on Bill Draper has died
Somewhat unrelated but both of Draper’s siblings, but not his own parents, lived to similar ages of ~97 and ~99

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Henry_Draper_Jr. (Personal life section)

georgeburdell··on We're working on a new RuneScape MMO
My two theories:

1. The original player base of these games is starting to hit retirement

2. AI has made it more profitable to develop a reasonable pace of content for these games

georgeburdell··on The AI Race Just Got Awkward
To answer the author’s question of why Chinese labs give away their work for less than cost, the answer is involution. China is struggling with overcompetition in other areas of its economy as well, such as electric cars, and perhaps ironically its labor share of income is substantially lower than the U.S.
georgeburdell··on DraftKings is using AI to behaviorally target chronic gamblers
Addictions spontaneously can turn on. For me, it was age 27. To classify people as inherently susceptible vs not is not accurate
georgeburdell··on As A.I. makes law firms more efficient, clients ask: 'Where's my discount?'
On the other hand, I'm horrified at the thought of zero marginal cost legal work given the strain of the current workload on courts.
georgeburdell··on The Evolution of Vending Machines
I have a relative with several vending machines. He is also in a position of power at the location where they're placed. So yeah you'd be competing with a guy like that.
georgeburdell··on 'That's so AI ' What gen Alpha's biggest insult tells us
My elementary-aged kids call AI-generated content "slop" and actively ask me if some videos on Youtube are slop before watching them. I'm proud. I think they will be able to detect AI manipulated content far better than older generations.
georgeburdell··on MCP was always a bad idea?
Agreed, had a coworker come to this same conclusion and now only distributes CLIs. I think it’s solid as long as the decision tree of which tools do what is fairly simple. Perhaps MCPs were just overused before
georgeburdell··on I am often wrong
I literally read this as human loop engineering. The next step would logically be to turn this into an agentic loop, and I imagine he does lots of that too.
georgeburdell··on TSMC revealing details about next gen A14 node
MRAM is more like 100ns, but yeah Intel actually offers this as part of their 16nm foundry process
georgeburdell··on Claude Cowork and chat are now one Claude
So you voted for Kodos instead of Kang [1]. Local models are the way out of the rug pulling

georgeburdell··on TSMC revealing details about next gen A14 node
A lot of that is the lack of SRAM scaling. There’s still quite a bit of improvements in the back end (metal traces). That aside, if foundries adopted say a 1T-1C SRAM we’d see a pretty rapid density doubling
georgeburdell··on Irish bank strikes (1966–1976)
“Payments continued in large part due to the circulation of cheques based on mutual trust, effectively substituting them for cash”

I doubt this would be possible in today’s lower trust societies

georgeburdell··on The biggest dinosaurs couldn't sit on their eggs
Not a paleontologist but my 2 sons went through a dinosaur phase not long ago. It seems like the vast majority of known dinosaur samples come from the northern rockies.
georgeburdell··on Silicon Valley is transforming the military-industrial complex? (2024)
Do you support the status quo of millions of H1Bs? Those people I doubt can or will take such a principled stance, making collective action by tech workers impossible.
georgeburdell··on iPhone Duo
Apple has most likely stress tested its engineers to stress test this phone
georgeburdell··on Initial effects of AI technology on employment look positive
No we are not hiring AI experts, just people we think can be trained to think AI-natively. It’s a different mindset that presumes whatever work you’re doing now is ultimately going to be used to train AI to do it later.
georgeburdell··on Initial effects of AI technology on employment look positive
I can’t read the article but in my group, which is not terribly AI exposed due to its hands-on nature, we are in fact hiring extra people into next year to handle additional AI initiatives that I am confident will succeed. In subsequent years, the plan as I have heard it is to let headcount go down by attrition.

I would not take extra hiring now as evidence that AI is preserving job numbers.

georgeburdell··on Pentagon rescinds new testosterone screening policy without explanation
I unironically paraphrase this at work all the time when talking about ops concerns. That and “the absence of evidence is not evidence of absence”
georgeburdell··on EFF to Governor Newsom: Veto California's AB 1709
Guess it’s that time in my lifecycle, but when I was a kid it was possible, nay probable, to accidentally stumble on some really horrific things on the internet, particularly on p2p sharing, and I’m fine (married, 3 children, no medications). I don’t see why kids need special protection from positive feedback loops. Parents need to be involved to turn this exposure from an affliction into an inoculation
georgeburdell··on Apple caught off guard by AI demand for Mac Mini and Mac Studio
AlexNet was 2012 and they explicitly called out the use of NVidia GPUs
georgeburdell··on Hilariously fast volume computation with the divergence theorem (2018)
As an aside, this seems related to the Holographic Principle? It states that the content of a volume is encoded in its surface

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holographic_principle

georgeburdell··on CEO fired developers to make room for AI. Developers create open source AI CEO
Some of the non native English speakers on my team have started to use “blast radius” and “shape of” in the course of casual conversation. It’s unnerving.
georgeburdell··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
When they're on visa managers know you can work them harder, especially during the PERM process
georgeburdell··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
Props to your coworker. In my office, they usually just work normal India hours and we have a 12+ hour delay for all communications.
georgeburdell··on Black hole singularity is a surface not a point
Pauli Exclusion is just another “force” that can be overridden. Nature isn’t a list of rules
georgeburdell··on AI is hitting entry-level jobs hardest, Stanford study finds
We can’t find seniors like that yet, even though our pay is nearly top tier, because hiring is so broken right now. Most hires come from referrals so it’s recycling the same people between different companies, and those people don’t have good AI experience.
georgeburdell··on AI is hitting entry-level jobs hardest, Stanford study finds
I didn’t say “most productive”, there was a qualifier attached. A person productive with AI is capable in a different way than the existing folks who are struggling to keep up with their jobs and retool to AI
georgeburdell··on AI is hitting entry-level jobs hardest, Stanford study finds
I don’t understand this logic. If I’m being honest, the most productive people with AI on my team are the two youngest. They don’t have product wisdom, yes, but the gap is so noticeable that I pushed my manager to forego the full-time work experience requirement that we have always had so that new hires don’t even know the old way of working and can just reframe the field in terms of AI.

AI is the biggest threat in over a generation to seniors who aren’t investing in keeping up. Managers without an instinct for AI are an endangered species as well.

georgeburdell··on The Indo-European Family Tree
It gets complicated by the preponderance of French loan words, although they tend to be for newer concepts such as car, elevator, etc.

There do also seem to be some genuine coincidences, such as sock it/saket, both being a somewhat forceful way to tell someone to be quiet.

But yes, Persian people and culture in particular has fascinated me due to the ancient, but not prehistoric, traces of a shared identity with Europeans, in contrast with its neighbors. It’s not something that gets a lot of attention in popular culture
