geoffeg··on Mom handcuffed, jailed for 8-year-old son walking half a mile
So we shouldn't allow children to go outside where the lightning could get them! (/s, but I wouldn't be surprised if someone seriously believes it is what we should do..)
geoffeg··on Musk’s first email to Twitter staff ends remote work
"We've dispatched a Tesla Model 3 to your current browser's location. To verify you are not a robot you must drive it for one hour and achieve a better Safety Score than the built-in autopilot is capable of achieving."
geoffeg··on Zoom says its video conference app coming soon to Tesla vehicles
I assume/hope it doesn't let you have the video on while you're driving.
geoffeg··on Mastodon's founder has a vision to democratize social media
Many Mastodon servers list which other instances they block or limit. Check out the "Moderated servers" list at the bottom of https://mastodon.social/about

How is that different from email though? Email providers will block whole swaths of IPs without telling you but you don't really notice it because it's very likely those IPs are only being used maliciously.

We're in a weird time right now though. Most people choose an email provider based on word of mouth or what their friends use but not enough people know about Mastodon to make that possible. Maybe Mastodon itself isn't the right answer, but I hope that a federated/distributed system is.

Is there a good library of mod/s3m files? The first time I heard Metallica's "The Call of Ktulu" was an s3m file that did a really good job sounding like the original, I've been looking (very casually) for that file for a while now.

Somewhere some old, crotchety CFI that still uses paper charts and demands their students do too is laughing "I TOLD YOU SO!"
geoffeg··on Optimizing images with the HTML <picture> tag
I've been surprised lately by the number of people that don't know about or understand HTTP headers. One discussion I saw was on a project that was trying to decide what language to serve a webpage in. They spent a good amount of time choosing a geo-location provider and library and then deciding what language to default to for locations that often had multiple languages. I asked why they didn't just use the Accept-Language header, which they weren't aware of.
geoffeg··on NEC PC 8201A
I had one of these in high school, they were great little devices, very portable for it's time. The keyboard on it was really nice. I bought a barcode scanner and wrote software to help my mom manage our kitchen inventory, which she thought was very nice and never used.

Kept it into the early 2000s, the serial port was still very useful for connecting to network hardware and embedded systems.

Can we just go full back plane with the CPU being just one of those cards on the back plane?
geoffeg··on Ask HN: What Is the Hype with Docker?
It seems like most of the value of Docker comes from the Dockerfile more than the containerization. The Dockerfile defines how to (build,) package and run an app, including the operating system dependencies. (That's not necessarily Docker specific, but I got the feeling you weren't asking only about Docker).
geoffeg··on Heroku Free Alternatives

Big Ass Fans (https://bigassfans.com/) has what some might consider to be an unacceptable/unprofessional name and they seem to do great. One might argue that they're "unprofessional" name has helped them.
geoffeg··on Tesla Vehicle Production and Deliveries for 3Q 2022
Has the quality of Tesla vehicles, specifically the Model 3, improved since production began? There were lots of reports of poor quality, inconsistencies and very long repair times when they first came out. Elon himself even said to wait until production reaches a steady state: https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-best-time-to-buy-t...

I have a Chevy Volt right now, but I sometimes wonder what I'd buy if it were to be totaled in an accident since GM made the (poor, IMHO) decision to discontinue the Volt.

geoffeg··on LibRedirect: Redirect YouTube, Twitter, Instagram to privacy friendly services
I've considered hosting my own Nitter and Bibliogram instances but I have to wonder if that reduces their privacy veil a bit. Wouldn't the requests from those instances be coming from a single IP, thereby potentially allowing their respective services to still track you? (Sure, you're avoiding the analytics from those service's web front-ends or apps but that can probably mostly be achieved by disabling JS.) I've considered adding a VPN or TOR gateway between the nitter and bibliogram instances I host to make them harder to track.
geoffeg··on About Lockdown Mode
True. If there was some way to de-auth or remove high target apps that might allow some level of deniability? (edit: I used the wrong word initially.)
geoffeg··on About Lockdown Mode
I find it interesting that Lockdown Mode doesn't (yet) enable multiple lock screen authentication methods. Requiring Face ID AND a pass code could be useful. (There are rumors that Apple will add Touch ID back to their phones in the future. I'm not sure they'd keep Face ID on a phone with Touch ID but combining those two methods AND requiring a pass code would seem to be the most secure.)

I'd also like to see some method for quickly wiping the phone or severely disabling it. A friend mentioned that a new scheme for thieves is to ask you for your unlocked phone at gunpoint and then use a cash app to transfer money to one of their accounts. Some way to very quickly (and covertly) wipe your phone would help defend against that attack. (Related: https://www.startribune.com/warrant-grifters-targeting-cash-...)

geoffeg··on Short story about my Steam Deck
Thanks. That’s one of the reasons I’m not immediately selling the gaming PC. I have a few older games that may not play well. I might still sell most of the gaming PC but keep the GPU (GTX 1070) and see if I can put it in my Proxmox server and stream it via Moonlight to my Steam Deck. I can use the Windows license from the gaming PC for a Windows VM.
geoffeg··on Short story about my Steam Deck
My Steam Deck should arrive in the next few weeks and once I use it a little I'm planning on selling (or donating, it's 7+ years old) my gaming PC. It's a tower case that takes up a lot of room under my desk, only serves one purpose and gets used a few hours a week. I've got a list of 20+ games I've been wanting to play but just didn't want to be stuck in front of the same monitors I use for work (I'm remote). I wonder if the Steam Deck and devices like it will change how (or more specifically where) people play PC games in the next few years.

I noticed that twitter.com also has no <title> tag, the title gets set once the JS loads. Kinda surprising to me that such a popular site like Twitter doesn't have such a basic HTML tag.

geoffeg··on AirTag leads to arrest of airline worker accused of stealing from luggage
A friend had his laptop and bag stolen from only a few feet behind him at a coffee shop. He had his back to the table he was using for only a minute or two as he placed an order from the counter. There were a few other people in the shop and no one remembers seeing anything.
geoffeg··on Putting Tailscale on the Steam Deck
I don't quite understand what this project is. How does it work with Moonlight or is it a replacement for Moonlight? (The docs don't seem to explain why I'd want to use it.)
