gegtik··on Ask HN: What's your backup setup? Manual or Automated?
Time Machine backup to my Synology NAS, then a time-honored offsite backup -- I clone my drive and physically leave the latest copy at my parents' house.

every time I visit I bring a newer drive and swap.

Simple, cost effective, foolproof.

gegtik··on How AeroPress Fans Are Hacking Their Way to a Better Cup of Coffee
Honestly I would prefer a Clever Coffee Dripper any day of the week. zero mess, probably even more dummy proof than the AP, higher capacity, imho better coffee.

how does this differ from Informatica?

It provides a gui for data transformation as well (https://www.informatica.com/)

gegtik··on Inbox by Gmail: now in more places
I like inbox, on my phone. However, on a PC, I like the ability to use gmail's keyboard shortcuts etc. Inbox seems poorly designed for use as a desktop interface

gegtik··on Minipresso – Hand-powered portable espresso machine
you add boiling water to it
gegtik··on Minipresso – Hand-powered portable espresso machine
Cute, but I'd wait to see reviews on the espresso it makes. I have a myPressi Twist which makes outstanding espresso but it requires me to preboil the parts to bring them up to temp , the whole process is finicky if you really care about coffee. Not sure how this falls onthe curve
gegtik··on Show HN: Soothe – Uber for Massages
Interesting quirk on the website, when you click the location dropdown at the top of the page and it stays open, scrolling to the bottom of the page reveals the same open dropdown.
gegtik··on Show HN: Javelin Browser
This addresses a pain point I didn't even realize I had -- waiting for the browser context switch followed by waiting for the page to load, followed by impatiently scrolling the page while it continues to parse, sometimes causing janky scroll teleporting as images are embedded above my viewport.

This is simply fantastic. Pro purchased.

One suggestion -- if it is possible to insert yourself as two entries on the Open With page, it would be nice to have the option to click a link and open with "Javelin" or "Javelin (Reader Mode)" (I'm talking about the android system popup for handling mime types)

gegtik··on How to Make the Best Pourover Coffee
For baseline, I recommend 2g coffee : 1oz water, 195F-205F for water temp, and 3:30-4:30 for brew time
gegtik··on How to Make the Best Pourover Coffee
most drip machines' major failing is the water brews too cool (should be approx 195-205f). There are a slew of newer drip machines that pay attention to brew temps and apparently brew a pretty good cup of coffee. The Moccamaster Technivorm was the first popular machine to do so.
gegtik··on How to Make the Best Pourover Coffee
I save all the old beans from when I get a new batch before finishing the old bag and every few months I do a big cold brew batch. It does use way more coffee than hot brewing.

I do 1/3 cup coffee grounds per cup of water, put it all in a mixing bowl in the fridge overnight, and the next day strain it with a very fine mesh. Lasts for a week or two in the fridge

gegtik··on How to Make the Best Pourover Coffee
Looks similar to how I do it https://vimeo.com/62869435

Pourover is great because it lets you get intimate with the variables. Good coffee is in a state of tension, between bitter and sour flavors. If you find your coffee doesn't taste good, it's usually out of balance in one direction.

Luckily there are several ways to nudge your coffee toward one end or the other of the continuum, they are related as follows:

  Sour <--> Bitter

  Colder <--> Hotter
  Coarser Grind <--> Finer Grind
  Shorter Brew <--> Longer Brew
  Lighter Roast <--> Darker Roast
The first time I applied these threories and ACTUALLY improved my coffee was an epiphany

gegtik··on Ack is a grep-like tool, optimised for programmers
Can you elaborate on these defects
gegtik··on Ack is a grep-like tool, optimised for programmers
It should be noted that "faster" is due to the fact that it limits itself to searching the subset of files that have code extensions.

I've tested grep against ack and ag for large text files and grep won handily, especially the latest version of grep.

Also note you can use GNU Parallel to run multiple greps

gegtik··on Irony is ruining our culture
When one is sufficiently religious, faith/belief become the paradigm for all mental processes. It becomes impossible to fathom a non-religious capacity of thought.
