geepytee··on PCB Edge USB C Connector Library
Very clever packaging of a connector
geepytee··on Launch YC: Optifye.ai – AI performance monitoring for factory workers
>Why not frame things from the perspective of rewarding good performance?

This guy knows marketing. Agreed it would not have been as controversial

geepytee··on GPT-4o with scheduled tasks (jawbone) is available in beta
Imagine being an engineer on the Siri team, must be so demoralizing.
geepytee··on Blackcandy: Self hosted music streaming server
Never crossed my mind to self host my own music streaming server, great idea!
geepytee··on Satellite powered estimation of global solar potential
The correct solution is 10.7Pwh. We are often exposed to 'Peta' when dealing with data.

geepytee··on Protecting undersea internet cables is a tech nightmare
On the transponders off point, I imagine soon we will have enough satellites such that we can map every object on the surface of the earth (specially something as large as a boat).

Could even see it through clouds using radar.

geepytee··on Starlink Direct to Cell
Meh lines the pockets of Tim Cook. Hard pass.
geepytee··on Starlink Direct to Cell
I see a lot of surf cams online, are those usually custom hardware?
geepytee··on Starlink Direct to Cell
Interesting idea. I can build this and open source it. I imagine there is equivalent hardware over LTE already?
geepytee··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (October 2024)
I am teaching myself how to build a robot quadruped (aka 'robot dog') from scratch, including an ML controller to make it move in animated ways.

I'm also documenting every step of the process and uploading it to YouTube, which means I am also teaching myself how to edit videos :)

If anyone wants to check it out: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL55VZ7oDEoRnXKSYTiGlN...

geepytee··on Ask HN: MagSafe Equivalent for Wall Outlets?
This is an awesome reply, thank you so much for explaining this, and for the links!
geepytee··on Starship Flight 5: Launch and booster catch [video]
I just quit my job at a SaaS. What am I doing with my life... The SpaceX team just caught the biggest rocket in history with a giant arm, we all need to dream bigger!
geepytee··on My first game with Carimbo, my homemade engine
I find that this is the best advice for life, not just making your own games. Do what you're most excited to do :)
geepytee··on Lead drinking-water pipes must be replaced nationwide, EPA says
I think so? I'll check with the city of Redwood City / San Mateo county. Good call!
geepytee··on Lead drinking-water pipes must be replaced nationwide, EPA says
Just ordered one, wish there was one for microplastics too (and whichever other contaminants that I'm not aware of).
geepytee··on Lead drinking-water pipes must be replaced nationwide, EPA says
Is there any cheap way to test the quality of my water? I did some Googling around, looks like there are services that will do this for a fee but didn't look particularly affordable.
geepytee··on McDonald's says Tyson and other suppliers fixed beef prices
Is that a bad thing? They claim that incarcerated workers receive the same pay as their civilian colleagues. IMO seems like a positive.
geepytee··on Cursor Team: Future of Programming with AI – Lex Fridman Podcast #447 [video]
Microsoft already has Github Copilot. I always thought OpenAI would eventually acquire them (they already hold a stake in them).
geepytee··on Poolside Announces $500M fundraise to make progress towards AGI
Never heard of these guys, do they even have a product?

Regardless, team looks promising. Former CTO of Github, supposedly the guy who incubated Copilot.

geepytee··on How to avoid a BSOD on your 2B dollar spacecraft
Genuine question, what would you use instead and why?
geepytee··on I'm building a robot dog and documenting every second for YouTube (Part 3) [video]
I'm keeping this project moving, this time around we designed the shoulder joint and torso, and got the shoulder moving for the first time (so now each limb has 3 working actuators).

geepytee··on Ask HN: What is your extension of choice for VS Code AI assistance?
There are many good extensions with somewhat similar features, the ideal extension might come down to personal preference but I've been building double.bot [0] after spending months using Github Copilot and running into the same bugs over and over (wrote about it here [1]) and I think we've done a good job at building the ideal extension for professional developers.

geepytee··on Ask HN: What is your extension of choice for VS Code AI assistance?
Can I ask why? I personally have been coding with LLMs since the davinci-003 days and don't see myself going back.

Granted I am biased, I am the co-founder of Double which is an extension for VS Code. But that's also why I'm curious to hear why are you against extensions (maybe we can learn from your experience).

geepytee··on Show HN: Void, an open-source Cursor/GitHub Copilot alternative
Just added 'build a new landing page' to my to-do, appreciate the feedback!

Anything else we could do to make double.bot a more compelling option for you?

geepytee··on Building a robot dog and uploading every second of it to YouTube (Part 2) [video]
Previously posted in HN [0] about how I was going to build a robot dog and document every second of it for Youtube.

Wasn't sure if there's interest for this type of content amongst our community but that post was my most upvoted post in personal history (not a huge number but I'll take it). Was really excited and it's super encouraging to see other people upvote/follow along :)

In this part 2 I finally assembled the first leg, did some last minute CAD redesign to eliminate parts, and starting coding the servos. Ran into a ton of issues around properly initializing servos and position control, and then leg kinematics and how to model a walking motion also kicked my ass. I've left all of it in the footage, unedited, because I think someone might learn from it (?) or at least question my decisions (which would be a good exercise too).

Video is super long. My inspiration was watching George Hotz programming videos (hours long) which I really enjoy and thought there should be a hardware equivalent

geepytee··on Building a robot dog and uploading every second of it to YouTube (Part 1) [video]
Can I ask why did you ask in the first place? Is this something that you're trying to figure out too?
geepytee··on Building a robot dog and uploading every second of it to YouTube (Part 1) [video]
That's very interesting, I had a ERS-111 and I also mentioned on another video that I'm a huge fan of the Furby (also had one growing up, it was less smart but through emotional cues it felt so 'alive').

Give me a couple of years and I'll bring back AI toys. Also AIBO is an amazing name, Japan always comes up with such good names man

Here's part 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGFMXu0In7w as promised :)
