gdelfino01··on HP re-releases classic computer science calculator: The HP-16C
I absolutely love my HP48SX and HP48GX (I have both) and the RPN is what I like the most. But if you don't like RPN, just type a regular expression between simple quotes and evaluate it.
gdelfino01··on Wayland set the Linux Desktop back by 10 years?
I'm on the same boat. I wish I could use COSMIC with X11. I am now looking into installing a different Linux distribution on my System76 laptop.

Many built-in functions are open source too. Use the "PrintDefinitions" ResourceFunction to see the code of functions that are implemented in Wolfram Language itself.

Bring back the indestructible Apple ][e and put let the kids program in logo (turtle graphics) for 1 or 2 hours per week max. The will not hurt them while society takes a few years to figure out how the introduction of technology in education went so catastrophically bad.

It is not just you. This is sad. Not one mention of right to repair, right to own, privacy etc.
gdelfino01··on Dark Mode Sucks
I used to be one of those setting everything to dark mode, custom CSS and all, but I am now cured. It was a difficult time as my eyesight was rapidly deteriorating to the point that I thought that I would need to change carers to something not involving computers. I am so thankful that it is over. The source of the problem was that I had been consistently over-prescribed by different optometrists. I don't blame them, but something must be off in how they were trained. To avoid this issue, do not use regular progressive lenses in your eyeglasses. Instead ask for an "intermediate distance" formula optimized for the typical distance between your eye and the computer monitor. In practice this is a depowered formula supposed to be used only for computer used, but I used it all the time. On my next checkup my official formula had decreases confirming that it was too strong in the first place. I know don't have to use dark mode, and my vision is much better in general (I'm in my 50s). And don't over use your phones!!
gdelfino01··on Comparing the power consumption of a 30 year old refrigerator to a new one
New ones break quickly and then consume zero energy. So then you buy an even newer one without caring at all about the emissions to buy the new one and to get rid of the old one. And then feel good to be "saving the planet" because you have a super efficient fridge and repeat the cycle.
gdelfino01··on Winamp Legacy player source code
I recently wend through the process of selecting a MP3 player software for my Linux laptop and after testing many settled on the Strawberry player. It is actually very good: https://www.strawberrymusicplayer.org/

gdelfino01··on Syntax highlighting is a waste of an information channel (2020)
This is kind of similar to the way Wolfram Mathematica highlights code. If everything is fine, everything is mostly black. Color is used while editing to highlight the "Head" and brackets of the expression being changed. It is also used to bring attention to missing/excessive parameters or invalid option names.

The excuse for saying so is the people with disabilities. But is that more important that being able to understand and trust the process?

gdelfino01··on The drama in trying to convert election PDFs to Spreadsheets
You introduce technology to increase transparency and fight corruption. You increase transparency by having video recordings of human counting votes linked to the electronic record of the totals.

When you introduce technology to eliminate manual counting and paper trails, then transparency is eliminated and you give a green light to fraud, corruption, very juicy contracts and death.

There is a way out. I'm not buying supermarket flour anymore and making your own bread with a bread machine is super easy (and very tasty). I have learned so much from this book:

gdelfino01··on Ask HN: Why is Firefox losing marketshare and how would you save it?
Same here after many years of using it. In my opinion, and to try to keep the internet free, we should look into supporting LibreWolf (a Firefox fork) just like most people moved from OpenOffice to LibreOffice.
gdelfino01··on Wolfram Cloud
The language is version control friendly, the notebooks are not. You explore and document using notebooks (.nb) and if your stuff get serious you should move the source code to a package (.wl or .m) which is just plain text file which is nice for version control.
gdelfino01··on Ask HN: How are you taking care of you eyes?
I was having huge problems with eyesight strain. Just after an hour of computer use I would see blurry, shadows, double, light sensitivity, etc. I was even thinking about changing my profession. I tried many things like blue light filters, eye drops, improved refresh rates, max-hardware-brightness with reduced software-brightness, different light bulbs, eInk, orange glasses, red light therapy, larger monitor farther away, etc.

NOW I AM FINE. The magic solution for me was to ask for intermediate-distance computer glasses. These were supposed to be for short/intermediate distance only. However, after a single day of usage, my eyes adapted to this depowered version of my formula and I never again used the regular glasses. I see 20/20 far with the intermediate distance eyeglasses. This strongly suggest that I was over-prescribed for years and now I feel so much better.

Summary: Tell your optometrist that you want intermediate distance eye glasses because you spend many hours in front of the computer. It _could_ make a great difference for your life as it did for mine.
