gburdell3··on Sora is here
And some of us have no intention of publishing any output and find the existence of these tools extremely worrying and problematic.
gburdell3··on VATSIM: The International Online Aviation Network
Yes, they updated the audio codec a few years ago. Now it sounds great. They also updated the live position syncing system so that other planes move much more smoothly across your screen
gburdell3··on Return to Office Is Bullshit and Everyone Knows It
When I work from home, I watch 8 hours of Twitch and get 0 work done. When I work from the office, I watch 0 hours of Twitch and get 8 hours of work done. I simply don't have the self-control to effectively work from home. That's all the data I need.
gburdell3··on Rising Share of U.S. Adults Are Living Without a Spouse or Partner
It is possible to be "happily alone" for many people.
gburdell3··on The $20 an hour Cessna 172 experiment (2020)
The medical system is really messed up. I would love to eventually get my PPL, but I also highly suspect that I have undiagnosed ADHD, and I don't want to essentially sign away my right to ever get treatment. Fortunately Microsoft Flight Simulator and VATSIM scratch the itch to fly for now, but it still sucks that I'll probably never get to actually do it in real life.
gburdell3··on Ask HN: What is your retirement plan? After retirement, what?
I don't really plan on retiring. I'm saving for it, since I'm in my mid-20s and a lot can change over time, but knowing what I know about myself right now, I can't imagine that I would enjoy retirement. I need something to work for, but I've always struggled to motivate myself to work on things without outside influence. I think a lot of my coworkers have felt the same way, since about half of them who retired have returned as contractors just because they enjoy the work.
gburdell3··on Wikipedia’s Redesign Is Barely Noticeable. That’s the Point.
I also thought I was served the mobile site at first, but after using the new site a bit I actually quite like it. One of my longstanding complaints with the old design was that using the full width of the screen for text is very hard to read on a modern monitor, so I'm glad to see they narrowed it down a bit. I also really like the floating table of contents.
gburdell3··on An embeddable and customizable fiat-to-crypto onramp
I hate crypto as much as the next guy, but try sending some money to Iran and see how well that goes. There's a legitimate use there for people with families in tumultuous countries.
gburdell3··on Tales of the M1 GPU
Some people just prefer their public persona to be in the form of an avatar instead of their real face. They want to have something there to represent themselves instead of just streaming a screen and nothing else, but they would rather that representation be an avatar or character rather than their physical selves.
gburdell3··on FTX to file for U.S. bankruptcy, CEO resigns
It's almost as if he's doing things that have real consequences for the world we live in!
gburdell3··on Companies like HP must split to survive, is like the evolution of new species
Yep, as a current Keysight employee, it certainly feels like more of the original HP philosophy and values have stayed with us, while HP themselves have become unrecognizable.
gburdell3··on X-Plane 12 Early Access
I've found that MSFS works much better when you turn off all the "fun" stuff and use add-on aircraft. I enjoy flying Airbus planes, so using mods like FlyByWire (free) and Fenix (paid) can drastically improve the experience since the built-in A320neo is pretty barebones. Those mods can also load flight plans straight from SimBrief so I avoid ever using the built-in flight planner. I just load up at the gate with an empty flight plan, load in my real plan from SimBrief, and pretend I'm flying a real A320.
gburdell3··on How to get the most out of your 1:1s
You're not a work robot, you're a human being with a life. It's only natural for people to want to discuss their lives with each other. It's hilarious when people on this forum complain about being treated as "faceless worker drones" and then leave comments like this.
gburdell3··on 1Password Has Raised $620M
I think a better way of saying this is that "nerds" (i.e. power users, the type of people typically on HN) want different things out of their UI/UX than the average user. That's the beauty of having different solutions to choose from: the power user is free to use something like KeePass, where it's not as easy to use, but you can set it up exactly the way you like; and the "normal" user can go with something like 1P or LastPass for more of a "set it and forget it" model. The average user doesn't care one bit about the things that you mentioned.
gburdell3··on FDA Moves to Ban All Menthol Cigarettes and Flavored Cigars
Flavors aren't effective at hooking young people, nicotine is. Nobody smokes because it tastes good, menthol or not. This is just another ban that makes some people feel good about themselves while pissing off the rest. I lean pretty far left, but this is the kind of meaningless ban that makes people hate Democrats.
gburdell3··on The Framework Laptop
It has to be software. I have a ThinkPad that I recently installed macOS on (not advocating hackintosh, but it's a fun project nonetheless) and the trackpad feels every bit as good as a real Mac. Smooth scrolling, smooth gesture recognition, everything just feels good. The hardware is capable of processing the gestures, but the non-Apple software just does a terrible job of making it feel good to use.
gburdell3··on The total PC market (including tablets) had 23% year-on-year growth
A lot of school districts buy tons of them for students to use, but I'm not sure how many individuals actually choose to buy a Chromebook over a traditional laptop.
gburdell3··on Apple unveils M1, its first system-on-a-chip for portable Mac computers
Which means that, according to Apple, it's better than the CPUs in the other laptops it's competing against. That slow i7 is typical for thin+light 13" machines. I fail to see how this is a bad thing or even sneaky marketing.
gburdell3··on How Satya Nadella turned Microsoft around
I've been using Win10 on multiple machines since release day and I have never once seen a forced restart. That was a problem on Windows 7, but I honestly don't know how people are still having this problem with 10.
gburdell3··on I overslept because iOS 14 disabled my alarm
My favorite was the physical alarm clock that would launch a propeller across your bedroom. The only way to turn off the alarm was to find the propeller and put it back on the base.
gburdell3··on A new company promises a 5G keyboarded BlackBerry in 2021
What did they do to butcher them in your opinion? I just recently picked up a new X390 and it's a great machine for the price, with better specs in just about every area than a Macbook for half the price. Only thing I would improve is the screen, 1080p doesn't cut it these days.
gburdell3··on OpenCore bootloader – open-sourced Apple UEFI drivers, enabling Hackintosh
I just wish console games supported keyboard/mouse controls. Playing FPS games on a controller is painful.
gburdell3··on Workers fear returning to work – many are resisting the call
I can't wait to go back to the office since I'm not able to stay nearly as productive at home. I work with hardware, so not having all my equipment right next to me on my desk has been a bit of a roadblock. I'm expected to stay home at least through the end of the year, though, and I'm willing to do it for the safety of myself and my coworkers, but I really don't want it to last much longer than that.
gburdell3··on Smokers quit in record numbers amid Covid fears
It did in my apartment, don't know how I lived without it
gburdell3··on Tesla worst for reliability in American driver survey
Don't own a Tesla, but from what I understand most things can be controlled from the steering wheel controls.
gburdell3··on The greatest privilege we never talk about: beauty
Hair transplants, most likely. They pull follicles from the back of your head and transplant them onto the temples and crown to fill in thin spots.
gburdell3··on Ask HN: What are some good resources to learn how electricity works?
That's how you know he actually knows what he's doing: he knows precisely how to shock himself for comedic effect without causing any damage.
gburdell3··on MIT moves all classes online for the rest of the semester
> Someone made your coffee too hot? Sue them.

I don't necessarily disagree with your overall sentiment here, but I always feel the need to point out that this is a really bad example of a frivolous lawsuit. That lady's car didn't have cupholders, which was pretty common on '90s cars, and the coffee was hot enough to fuse her labia together. You can look up pictures; it wasn't pretty. She also only sued for medical damages and nothing more, if I remember correctly.

gburdell3··on The Warby Parker clones are imploding
Plus Zenni has more "normal" styles of glasses that you don't need a beard and 6-inch-tall haircut to pull off.
gburdell3··on Hacking an Audi: performing a man-in-the-middle attack on FlexRay
There's a pretty big difference between testing software with a protocol that you know and understand, and reverse-engineering the communications on a production vehicle.
