gboss··on The weird, get-rich-quick world of dropshipping
She used to have her own store in Marin County. Too much overhead. I think she lost it in 2008ish and went purely online then.
gboss··on The weird, get-rich-quick world of dropshipping
My second job out of college, back in 2011, was as the only employee for a drop-shipper who sold fabric for upholstery, lighting, and all kinds of home furnishings. Her website was an off the shelf .NET ecommerce app she probably paid a few thousand for. I was the customer service rep and web dev for the company. She did surprisingly well, grossing $120-160k a month. Her margin was around 20% I believe. I made a pretty small salary but it was a great way to kickstart my dev career.

Edit: For clarity.

gboss··on How to manage HTML DOM with vanilla JavaScript only?
Depending on how "hydration" is done it can still waste cpu cycles and hurt time to interactive on mobile devices.
gboss··on Udemy raises $50M at a $2B valuation from Japanese publisher Benesse
My team which manages our company's ecommerce website inherited maintaining an iOS app that was being developed by a contracting firm. No one on my team had much experience in iOS. My company is extremely frugal. I bought an intro to iOS course on Udemy for the five of us for about fifty dollars total. It was excellent. Was definitely blown away by the quality and the price. It got us quickly up to speed on xcode, debugging, swift, view creation and publishing to the app store among other things. I am sure there is junk content on udemy, but there is also really good content that is worth more than the price.

Do it! The coast starlight is great. I have taken it a few times from Los Angeles to Oakland. It is so relaxing, the diner car is great and so is the observation car which is a fantastic place to camp out with a book. I've been meaning to take it up to Seattle. I'm sure it's beautiful going through Oregon and Northern California. When you take it to Los Angeles you go right by vendenberg air force base and the Space X and Nasa hangers.
gboss··on Firefox 72.0
This has been a huge Pita, for my team. Good news is it has gotten some of them to switch to Firefox for debugging. It really is awful that bug slipped through.
gboss··on Slack have blocked using the website on mobile
This is a shame for mobile developers as well. Deep linking from one app to another can be tricky to get right. Loading slack from the Android emulator browser was an easy way to test various deep links. Not sure why they would care.

This is exactly what the print media query is for, which is supported in all modern browsers.

gboss··on Why Graphiti?
PostgREST is a project that does that automatically for PostgreSQL. It takes your schema of your db and creates an api based on table relationships and provides security through a database design pattern of enforcing row level security. Side effects are challenging. For instance sending an email on account creation requires creating a listener on the postgres notify event but it is interesting to think about even if not 100% practical.

gboss··on Survival of the Richest (2018)
What about raising taxes to pay for the pension gap? They always talk about Social Security being in some kind of crisis. Social Security is taxed at 6.2% of income for the first ~$130k of a person's income in a year. While the taxable threshold increases with inflation, we could give it a boost to better balance the books and set it to the first $400k of income.

There are definitely more deer than in the past. The elimination of natural predators and the decline of hunting have let their numbers explode.

gboss··on Soil Erosion: Why soil is disappearing from farms
I really enjoyed the book Third Plate by Dan Barber. (https://www.amazon.com/Third-Plate-Field-Notes-Future/dp/014...)

While I don't know if the methods explored in the book will be able to sustain the entire world population. I really liked how he argues in this century we can focus on growing food for flavor and not just quantity and flavorful foods generally come from farms that have bio dynamic practices which support soil health and eliminate the need for nitrogen based fertilizers.

gboss··on Samsung TVs should be regularly virus-checked, the company says
I'm pretty sure my Samsung smart TV has accessed the internet through the hdmi cable connected to a roku device. I never use the built in smart functionality but it definitely tries to insert itself whenever possible. It's very frustrating.

The PBB crisis realy was astounding. My dad and the rest of our extended family lived in Michigan at the time. He developed type one diabetes in his mid thirties. We have no known familial history of the disease. I have always wondered if they were related.
gboss··on The Fat Lady Is Singing
A long time ago I went to an opera with real time subtitles, it worked well. I didn't know that it was uncommon to be subtitled when in a different language than the one spoken in the area.
gboss··on The “Developer Experience” Bait-And-Switch
You actually can throttle your cpu with chrome developer tools. I often use it when profiling my client side code. I also don't like to have the fastest phone, I have a Nexus5x, because it helps me know if it works on my phone it will run great elsewhere. I recommend other front end developers do the same.

I really don't understand what the issue is with tipping. I am American and I love the custom. I feel being able to pay directly the person I have received a service from is very powerful. I think it does incentivise a better work ethic and it's a very social way of affording a middle class income. Now states that reduce the minimum wage for tip workers, that's evil (I live in California).
gboss··on Microsoft Surface Studio
I run a Windows 10 PC at work with the Linux Subsystem enabled. It has been a godsend. We are historically a C# shop, but have a new front-end web server in NodeJS. I continue to work on a PC because the NodeJS site consumes C# web services. I will sometimes work on the C# service and the node site at the same time and have the Node site point to my local builds of the C# services. Before, I used to use Vagrant, but it was extremely finicky and would break or corrupt randomly. While I know NodeJS runs on native windows, certain dependencies such as Couchbase have given me pain trying to get working. Now I do my NodeJS work running inside the Linux Subsystem. It's been extremely performant, and I always catch case sensitive bugs and other Linux issues that the Mac developers miss due to have a case insensitive file system.

gboss··on Firefox tops Microsoft browser market share for first time
Actually Mozilla ditched Google as their search revenue partner and now is partnered with select search engines depending on the market. Yahoo for the US, Yandex for Russia and Baidu for China, for example. Mozilla to my knowledge no longer relies on Google for any revenue.

See how do we generate revenue question: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/foundation/annualreport/2014/f...

gboss··on Mpemba effect: warmer water can freeze faster than colder water
As long as it's not hot/warm water from the faucet. Many water heaters can leach metals into the water and while safe for showering you shouldn't drink it. http://mobile.nytimes.com/2008/01/29/health/29real.html?refe...
gboss··on Scientists discover potentially habitable planets
There are altitudes within Venus' thick atmosphere that are actually quite reasonable, with it being proposed that humans would only need a simple oxygen mask to survive. The idea of setting up a "floating" colony in Venus' atmosphere has been proposed a few times: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colonization_of_Venus#Aerostat...
gboss··on The Apple iPad Pro Review
I don't really think that's a no brainer. They're completely different products. I'd much rather watch a movie on netflix on an IPad Pro than deal with the very poor resolution of a Mac Book Air. Also an IPad is a touch interface, Mac Book Air is OS X. As the OP said, these can be great devices for people not in tech that just need to type a few notes or emails. There's very little to break in an IPad as everything is pretty much preconfigured.
gboss··on The 40,000-Mile Volcano
>"Compare this with 'decompression freezing' of water: when you open a really cold beer bottle, ice often forms in the beer. The phase transition for H2O is such that liquid is stable at higher pressures than ice (I think this relates to ice being lower density but I don't know). Opening the beer lowers the pressure, causing some water to freeze.."

This is fascinating! This past New Years, I had two beer bottles in a row freeze into beer slushies when I opened them. We had left them in the freezer probably longer than we should have. I really appreciate the explanation. I tried to explain the weird situation to a colleague the next week but he didn't believe me. Thank you.

gboss··on Chemical clears Alzheimer's protein and restores memory in mice
2000mg = 2 grams not 2 kilograms. So it would be 2 grams per kilogram.

2kg = 20000000mg.

Hope that clears that up.
