gbaygon··on Argentina's Senate approves bill to eliminate income tax
yes major downsides, these are only strategies to get by
gbaygon··on Argentina's Senate approves bill to eliminate income tax
yes but in an hyperinflationary scenario it won’t last long (laws are defined in pesos)

so it could be back to sub 800 soon

gbaygon··on Argentina's Senate approves bill to eliminate income tax
its normal now, everybody knows how to work with it - buy with credit payable in 6/12 months, take advantage of government credit to offset it (often such credits are below inflation)

Also buy street dollar (blue) with whatever you manage to save, etc - to sell it later to preserve value

At this point after many decades of inflation every argentinian is a hobbyist economist himself (otherwise you couldn’t make it month to month)

Keep in mind that in reality it raises the floor to 1900 dollars/ month for workers only. Thats at today’s black market exchange rate (article cites non existent official rate).

With the rapid inflation we are experiencing (likely going hyper) that floor will get back to normal soon.

We’ll se what next president does.

gbaygon··on Apple's soldered-in SSDs are engineered in the WORST way possible [video]
I work as a software engineer, my daily driver is Macbook Pro (m1, 16gb) and update them every 3 years on average. Do you know how much downtime I’ve had b/c broken package updates (linux), long unapproved software updates (win) malware or hardware failures? exactly zero.

That’s not luxury, thats a good tool to do the job for me.

Theres is one thing non apple manufacturers can’t do: iOS

I’ve given old iphones / helped purchase new ones to my Android friends over the years - none got back to android.

The experience is subjective but a well designed user interface with attention to detail an very responsive hardware/software combination that keeps working like that after 4+ years beats every other option. Specially after apple focused on selling services and now old devices seem more performant than ever.

Also you don’t need a $1000 iPhone - a refurbished 2nd gen SE is about 250 on amazon.

gbaygon··on Yerba Mate – A Long but Current History (2021)
I'm Argentinian and we keep sharing mate as if nothing have happened. Off course there may be some people that started to drink their own mate but definitely not the majority, not even close.

Sharing mate is a ritual too culturally rooted to Argentinian society. It's hard to explain but it goes beyond drinking a hot beverage.

gbaygon··on Is VISA down everywhere in the US?
you can if you are in El Salvador for example
gbaygon··on Is VISA down everywhere in the US?
It's an alternative payment network, implemented as a bitcoin layer 2. You can argue that it's somewhat centralized, but not as much as Visa.
gbaygon··on Is VISA down everywhere in the US?
Well I've actually paid for street food using lightning, and also use it regularly it to send money to my family using Strike. It's instant and practically free.

have you heard of lightning network?

It exists and it’s called “proof of stake”, see Cardano and ETH2 for example.

The pros and cons are debatable but the technology is interesting. If you want to know more I recommend the Ouroboros whitepapers by IOHK.

gbaygon··on PayPal starts charging 2.9% for refunded sales
Isn’t the point of “disruption” so popular in startup culture to leverage the agility of smaller enterprises (and even a pitch used to rise capital) the tool to fight old paradigms? My point being that it isn’t “capitalism” fault, but that the markets are lagging behind the demand and it will fix itself eventually (again, see Stripe efforts in this matter for example).
gbaygon··on PayPal starts charging 2.9% for refunded sales
what about stripe?
gbaygon··on PayPal starts charging 2.9% for refunded sales
Capitalism is free market which allows you to switch providers freely and, if enough people agree with you, it will eventually create a market force that will make PayPal step back or lose it's business.

It may be greed and lack of sight from PayPal side, but capitalism tends to adjust itself.

gbaygon··on Drinking hot tea linked with risk of 1 type of oesophageal cancer
Just one data point, I’m from Argentina, we drink Mate here (as in yerba mate with a straw) the custom is to drink it very hot (around 80 deg celcius) and never knew any one with oesophageal cancer. You start drinking it as a child with sugar and cold (60 deg) and you just get used to it. After a couple of years you drink it bitter (Mate Amargo) and hot.

It's nice to try to recover the spirit of it, but also for this to work it should be also lightweight (or at least usable).

I'm getting:

That's Safari on my 15" mbp 17 2018.

gbaygon··on What Car Thieves Think of the Club (2010)
I wasn’t talking about high end italian cars, I was talking about cars most people use in Italy. Last time I was there I forgot my driving license and was traveling with a friend from the US, we had to rent an automatic Volvo S60 for twice the price of a manual VW or fiat (automatic is rare and in premium cars)
gbaygon··on What Car Thieves Think of the Club (2010)
You may be right about the numbers in Europe but it certainly is the case in Italy where automatic cars are nowhere to be seen (except some luxury sedans). I’ll argue this is because is way more fun to drive a manual transmission.
