gazrogers··on Campingspot, an experimental map for camping around the world
I'm trying to view it on Mac OS 10.6.8 with Chrome 24.0.1312.52.
gazrogers··on Campingspot, an experimental map for camping around the world
I'm getting nothing but a blank screen?
gazrogers··on Aaron Swartz, Asking For Help, 119 Days Ago
edw519 has posted exactly once on this discussion and made no attempt that I can discern to 'defend his rude comment'.
gazrogers··on Anonymous R.I.P Note for Aaron Swartz
The "read in peace" line was the final line of the EFF's tribute -> https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2013/01/farewell-aaron-swartz
gazrogers··on How should I deal with an employee who has slept with my wife?
You can fire people, but you have to follow a certain procedure to do so, otherwise you put yourself at risk of being sued for wrongful dismissal. There are clauses in employment contracts to cover gross misconduct so that you can fire someone for stealing etc. If you can't afford the employee you can make them redundant - but there are rules about not filling a similar position for a certain amount of time thereafter to ensure that it's not used as a way of firing people just because you don't like them. If an employee does their job and does it well you should not be able to just fire them because you're having a bad hair day. To me as UK citizen, your system looks like a crazy free-for-all. To each their own I suppose. :-)

Incidentally, IANAL - the above is essentially right but I'm not an employer and only have an employee's view of things.

gazrogers··on It’s Official: Austerity Economics Doesn’t Work
It stuns me that the Tories have managed to convince so many people that the debt is all down to Labour and not the reckless profligacy of the banks. The vast majority of the debt was run up ensuring that the entire banking system in the UK didn't collapse taking the saving of hard-working British people with it. Virtually nothing has been done by the Tory-LibDem coallition to prevent this from happening again.
gazrogers··on The open-source "svblte like" blogging platform
Given the quality of some of the svbtle output, I think that the Chicago Tribune comparison is overly generous.
gazrogers··on US patent lawsuits now dominated by 'trolls'
The trap I fell into was making the mistake of arguing with a lawyer. ;-)
gazrogers··on US patent lawsuits now dominated by 'trolls'
What if I buy all the land around your house and sue you every time you cross through it to go to the shops or take your kids to school? Would you consider that fair?
gazrogers··on [dead]
Clumsy HTML - you've placed a DIV (class=sidenav-wrapper) over the top of your article so that links don't work on about a third of your page. Giving it a z-index of -1 seems to fix it.
gazrogers··on Foldify - print foldable 3D figures from iOS
Looks like a copy rather than a pivot.
gazrogers··on How to Drink Like a Pro and Maintain Your Professionalism
If you're only drinking because everyone else is drinking you're a sheep. People who would seriously judge you by what you do or don't drink are not worth knowing.
gazrogers··on Please come break my web app.
Ye gods!

You do realise there are tags other than 'DIV', don't you?

gazrogers··on Lie on your résumé? One job-seeker's moment of truth
It's from the latin for table. One would think you'd have done your research before criticising others for not doing their research.
gazrogers··on Family trees: Tracing the world's ancestor
Never mind a different country - if you married someone from a different species they're still related to you. The only difference is the number of generations you need to go back to find the common ancestor.
gazrogers··on Family trees: Tracing the world's ancestor
We already are.
gazrogers··on A game theoretic approach to the toilet seat problem
Am I the only man in the world who leaves the seat up regardless of the operation undertaken?
gazrogers··on [dead]
Is this an example of the better class of blogging we should expect on the svbtle network?
gazrogers··on CSS Positioning 101
Needs to say how 'position:relative' affects 'position:absolute' on child elements.
gazrogers··on I refuse to tolerate assholes
> If you want code written, accept that the people who can do it best have better things to care about than feelings.

Are you suggesting that all the 'best coders' are arseholes? If so, do you have any evidence to back that up?

gazrogers··on This Is What Developing For Android Looks Like
If I develop software for a PC I don't have 1000+ PCs with every conceivable combination of CPU, graphics card, monitor, sound card, and Windows version. That would be absurd and unworkable. And yet that's what this article would have us believe you should do when developing for Android.
gazrogers··on GoldenEye (N64) has a fully-functional ZX Spectrum 48x emulator built into it.
Excellent! Now all I need is an N64 emulator...
gazrogers··on How to Multiply Numbers that are Close to base 100 in just one line
Why the extra link? I'm sure the vast majority of HN users are able to delete everything bar the domain name in their browser's address bar.
gazrogers··on Matt, the founder of WP, has his own way of dealing with feedback and objections

gazrogers··on Apple wins over Motorola in 'slide-to-unlock' ruling
This is complete conjecture on my part and could well be completely wrong.

His connection with Microsoft may not be completely severed. It's in Microsoft's interest to ensure that there is continuing doubt over whether or not Android is patent-free so they can continue their shakedown of handset manufacturers, so having some "expert" out there sowing the seeds of doubt every time some little claim of infringement appears would obviously be beneficial to them.

gazrogers··on A minimal CSS layout framework
I think the .unit class could be done away with if he used .ingrid > * in its place. Of course, that might mean rewriting some of the CSS to account for the change in specificity in that rule.
gazrogers··on How to build the best of breed web apps
I'm not sure I want to take advice on design from a site which thinks that flipping paper pages is a suitable metaphor for a browser. It's clever but, in my opinion, it's a poor interface.

Wasn't there a link on here recently about poor skeuomorphic interfaces?

gazrogers··on Build a house for less than $5000
Woodlice may be a problem, but we don't have much in the way of termite infestations here in the UK.
gazrogers··on An open letter to anyone with “SQL Server” on their resume
