gautamdivgi··on Java 21: First Release Candidate
Any system that requires scale and performance and in-depth monitoring. The one thing about Java that most people miss is the javaagent based instrumentation that is exemplary. So when you’re in trouble you always have jconsole . There’s an excellent APM that we use called glowroot which is open source.

Also what all others have mentioned below.

gautamdivgi··on The elite's war on remote work has nothing to do with productivity
It’s basically the government “strongly nudging” companies to start their RTO. I don’t think every company suddenly discovered they were unproductive
gautamdivgi··on Reasons Not to Be a Manager (2019)
I’ve had the opposite situation. I’m a PE that works with a director. Problem is he’s been a lot more keen on the “shiny” than I am. After more than 25 yrs being an IC I’m definitely over the shiny. I can smell shiny tech debt miles away. Problem is trying to get the managers out of the technical path.
gautamdivgi··on Senators to Propose Ban on U.S. Lawmakers, Executive Branch Members Owning Stock
I don’t think she is the best trader. I think it’s her husband that’s the best trader.
gautamdivgi··on Senators to Propose Ban on U.S. Lawmakers, Executive Branch Members Owning Stock
The problem with this is that now you will have their spouses or children own the stock and not have similar reporting requirements. I don’t believe this ban will accomplish much.
gautamdivgi··on Attention Caplanites: School Is Less Wasteful Than You Think
Isn’t proliferation and ease of availability of student loans making college more expensive?

I’d hate to have college only be for people with means to pay. But I think tuition fee increases have far outpaced inflation.

gautamdivgi··on Ban on recording without consent is unconstitutional, US court rules
Does this apply to private citizens or even government officials?
gautamdivgi··on When wealthy adventurers take risks, who foots the bill for rescue attempts?
I think world navies and coast guard collaborate on high seas rescue and recovery [0].

gautamdivgi··on Two US lawyers fined for submitting fake court citations from ChatGPT
That’s why diving into research will not help general practitioners. Because research isn’t fact. You need a body of research along with oversight of statistical methods and its data collection to claim fact and that too with specific constraints.

So they do learn fundamentals but fundamentals do not come out of research papers.

gautamdivgi··on Two US lawyers fined for submitting fake court citations from ChatGPT
I think a lot of your general practitioners are bound to follow protocol set forth by various medical organizations. So in that sense a lot of diving into research won’t help them. They need to understand and diagnose without having to worry about every little research paper. A lot of research papers aren’t truth - they are peer reviewed opinions.

Once you get to medical research groups that formulate those protocols, that’s where research becomes important.

gautamdivgi··on Meta's plan to offer free commercial AI models puts pressure on Google, OpenAI
Meta has always been a big open source contributor. We use their prophet model for forecasting extensively.

Their quality of open source has always been good for the things I’ve used.

gautamdivgi··on Why Does Google Kill So Many Products?
For any large company I think you overestimate the amount of control that CEO’s and HR heads have. I mean they make broad policy decisions based on some cost & growth numbers.

I think the whole project killing long precedes Sundar or Ruth. In fact chrome (which Sundar handled product for I believe) is something that has endured.

gautamdivgi··on Sequence diagrams, the only good thing UML brought to software development
Activity diagrams do a decent job too. But yes, sequence and activity diagrams are all I have used.
gautamdivgi··on Bay Area woman is on a crusade to prove Yelp reviews can’t be trusted
Isn’t this cause for defamation? Or is it protected under article 230?

Even if it’s not yelp doing it the fact that they are publicly advertising the reviews should make them culpable.

gautamdivgi··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (June 2023)
Won’t heap compaction and pthreads be a c++ skill set and not a python/django one?
gautamdivgi··on Heavy electric trucks cheaper than diesel goods trucks
Cheaper how? Don’t you need a battery change at a certain mileage or age of the vehicle that will eliminate any cost advantage of not using diesel? At least for cars it does. It may be better for trucks considering they do put in a lot of mileage
gautamdivgi··on The Staff Engineer's Path – Book Review
Yes, but if you stay where you are and don’t push the managers you work with to take execution responsibility you will damage your career.
gautamdivgi··on JPMorgan Chase and Co tracks employees to dystopian extents
I use a system76 for personal use and an iPhone. My Apple accounts for personal and work are separate. I also use a vpn on all personal devices and use Firefox for browsing.
gautamdivgi··on Sam Altman goes before US Congress to propose licenses for building AI
Remember the paper where they admitted to having no "moat". This is basically them trying to build a "moat" through regulation. Since big-co are probably the only ones that can do any sort of license testing right now. It's essentially trying to have an "FDA" for AI and crowd out competitors before they emerge.
gautamdivgi··on JPMorgan Chase and Co tracks employees to dystopian extents
Just keep work devices separate from personal. I think there may be some regulatory aspect to recording conversations in banks.

Either way workplace isn’t personal space. What exactly are folks planning at work that shouldn’t be recorded? Some may say have unions. But only Union activity would be covered under that. I don’t think you’ll ever get a Union that can negotiate for not tracking time and activity while on the clock.

gautamdivgi··on Blizzard developers say return-to-office policy 'cost us some amazing people'
Is RTO being driven by the government? There suddenly seems to be huge push this year and not much in 2022. Allegedly commercial real estate is something that many banks have exposure to and will not be solved unless RTO is implemented. This is just my hypothesis and obviously correlation isn't causation.
gautamdivgi··on What if we tolerated diseases?
Not sure why you got downvoted. But I believe you’re right. I did read that you should not take the otc pain reliever before the shot but can do so when symptoms develop after the shot.
gautamdivgi··on Apple’s Unionized Store Wants to Start Accepting Tips from Customers
I'm opposed to tipping on principle. I understand it when workers are not organized and have no recourse to fair wage but have to turn to tips. I cannot understand it for a union shop. Negotiate a fair wage and say no to tipping dark patterns in society. I really don't care "how technologically easy" it is. That is just exacerbating the problem.
gautamdivgi··on Apple’s Unionized Store Wants to Start Accepting Tips from Customers
Why is tipping needed for a union negotiated salary?

Ideally we need to move away from tipping. It’s like a hidden tax everyone needs to pay. They’re supposed to be union so they can negotiate a fair wage. I do not like this descent into the tipping space.

gautamdivgi··on A small number of companies are colluding to cheat H1B visa lottery, US says
Calling them technology companies is a stretch. They should really be labelled as staffing companies.
gautamdivgi··on A small number of companies are colluding to cheat H1B visa lottery, US says
When stock price triumphs everything else and management is stuffed with political hacks as opposed to value creators the only way is to keep cutting cost until the whole show runs into the ground. The focus is on the current set of people to make bank before the thing falls apart.
gautamdivgi··on An introduction to lockless algorithms (2021)
Aren’t there formal analysis techniques that can help ferret those out? My MSCS had a course called “science of programming”. The focus used to be proofs for correctness of programs, which included concurrent programs.
gautamdivgi··on Farouk al Kasim saved Norway from its oil (2014)
That’s good to know. Thanks!!!
gautamdivgi··on Farouk al Kasim saved Norway from its oil (2014)
Is that deployed infrastructure today to handle needs and scaling for the future? I know Germany was cutting back on nuclear.
