gamerDude··on Accumulation of cognitive debt when using an AI assistant for essay writing task
And this is exactly what this study showed too.

"Brain connectivity systematically scaled down with the amount of external support: the Brain‑only group exhibited the strongest, widest‑ranging networks, Search Engine group showed intermediate engagement, and LLM assistance elicited the weakest overall coupling."

gamerDude··on Binary Wordle
It took me 10 tries...
gamerDude··on Vision Language Models Are Biased
Hypothetically, could this be fixed by changing the input method. For instance, I just quickly looked up how humans process imagery.

"the primary visual cortex, located at the back of the brain, receives the visual signals and processes basic visual features like edges, lines, and orientations."

So, potentially if we did a pre-processing step to get more features out beforehand we would see different results in the output.

gamerDude··on Show HN: Unsure Calculator – back-of-a-napkin probabilistic calculator
Great points. I think the idea of this calculator could just be simply extended to specific use cases to make the statistical calculation simple and take into account additional variables. Moving being one example.
gamerDude··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (March 2025)
I'm working on making it easy for startups to run experiments and do them well.

And I ran my first experiment on Saturday to good effect. Ran a small ad and already got some leads. I feel super pumped about it. And excited to share out the results soon! Definitely an easy experiment to start proving the model.

gamerDude··on Show HN: Job Application Bot by Ollama AI
I'm excited to see how applications of all sorts of things change. With AI, you can have a personalized application to every job, every college, every grant, etc. etc.

I would imagine it will then have to be some sort of matching algorithm or dual opt in system. Maybe dating apps styles will become common.:P

gamerDude··on I made "Character AI" for learning
I've had a spam email account for years now. Makes it easy to sign up for anything, doesn't have your name associated and allows you to get past email verification. :)
gamerDude··on Show HN: I made a website where you can create your own "Life in Weeks" timeline
I'd love to see more optionality in the events that shaped me.

I loved that you made it easy to incorporate world events etc. And the general school calendar.

It would be really nice to incorporate the world events in a list of select which ones made an impact in your life.

gamerDude··on A Puzzle about a Calculator
I assume it has to do with them being rectangular. And while technically you could have a rectangle that is rotated, I think it's also plausible to assume that any diagonals are considered as rhombuses (rhombi?)
gamerDude··on I automated my job application process
It will be interesting to see a SaaS that applies to jobs come up.

I wonder if the application process will switch up in the near future to people posting their profiles for then company recruiters/AI to reach out and contact since if they post a job they just get 10k automated applications.

gamerDude··on Something weird is happening with LLMs and chess
This is exactly what I feel AI needs. A manager AI that then hands off things to specialized more deterministic algorithms/machines.
gamerDude··on AI Slop Is Flooding Medium
This is clearly just a bot responding.
gamerDude··on Do We Need a 37-Cent Coin? (2009)
I'd love to find your $5000 coin on the sidewalk!

Sounds terrible to me, coins are so much harder to keep track of!

gamerDude··on Show HN: A real time AI video agent with under 1 second of latency
Definitely responds quickly. But could not carry on a conversation and kept trying to almost divert the conversation into less interesting topics. Weirdly kept complimenting me or taking one word and saying, oh you feel ____. Which is not what I said or feel.
gamerDude··on Effects of Gen AI on High Skilled Work: Experiments with Software Developers
I start new projects a lot and just have a template that has everything I would need already set up for me. Do you think there is a unique value prop that AI gives you when setting up that a template would not have?
gamerDude··on Ask HN: What are you working on (August 2024)?
Love the idea and I see multiple people working on what I hope can be the future of meetup.com. Good luck!
gamerDude··on Death Cafe
Dealt with the same a couple of years ago when my father passed. However, the worst experiences by far were places that needed proof of death/legal to cancel accounts.

But as a creator myself, I'm not at what size I would figure out company procedure for death other than canceling/transferring an account.

gamerDude··on Why Ed-Tech Startups Don't Scale (2022)
I worked with a lot of schools in my last company and unfortunately I don't think extensive research is the best road either. While I totally understand your position, this excuse is also used for only allowing pen and paper for math in highschool by teachers.

It takes a crazy amount of time to extensively research and prove things in education for a few reasons:

There is opposition to doing the research because teachers/parents don't want their students to be the first.

It's really hard to make random control groups because schools want to put kids in classrooms by their process, not the whims of the researchers.

It's expensive and mostly controlled by the big granters (ex. Gates Foundation).

Results are often looked at via testing measures (which if you look at assessments, sometimes they were proven by having 400 white kids in an affluent school use, aka not representative).

And so, we have a bit of an issue.

Almost no one teaches math via a spreadsheet even though most adults do. It isn't researched on the implications.

Data science as a class to qualify for credit to get into college is greatly contentious because it isn't proven. Even though it is clearly important to our current era.

In addition, teachers are human and so they don't necessarily teach with the 100% best proven methodologies day in and day out.

So I think it's important to realize that education is human. It's flawed and messy and isn't aligned to the best methods already. Sometimes you get lucky with a teacher that works for you and sometimes not.

gamerDude··on How to build quickly
Yes, but at the beginning you can't be totally sure that what you are building is right thing to build or the money/resources to be slow.
gamerDude··on What happens in a mind that can't 'see' mental images
Yes, this is essentially my experience. I can't recall sound, but if I may "tag" features to a sound so that I can somewhat imagine it.

Like the idea of a firework bang, being low intense vibrations, or a car horn being a high pitched short startling sound. Still can't really imagine it like I can picture things in my head, but I have an idea of the what the experience would be like.

gamerDude··on What happens in a mind that can't 'see' mental images
I know I've heard Hells Bells before because the name is recognizable, but I have literally nothing coming up when trying to imagine what it sounds like.

Another fun story. I did improv comedy for a few years. One of the warm up games we played was someone would start singing a song, then another person would tag you out and sing a different song. I was bad at this game. But I have a few simple things in my back pocket to "play". Somewhere over the rainbow is one of them. The last person was doing some sort of rap, and what came out from me was a rap version, until the crowd helped correct it. I just have no idea what it sounds like other than trying to memorize if it's a high pitch or a low pitch, etc.

Regarding the inner monologue, I do have one. And it feels similar to my ability to visualize. I can control it, give it emotion per say, (not sound for me), but it isn't as strong as a memory of a dream.

gamerDude··on What happens in a mind that can't 'see' mental images
Conversely, I discovered I had anauralia (finally got a name for my inability to "hallucinate" sounds). I found it when I was hosting a weekly event and meeting lots of people. And we talked about senses and memory, etc. And one day I realized I have no sounds in my memory, nor do I get songs stuck in my head. I asked others and it was instantly clear they had a different experience than mine.
gamerDude··on Show HN: I built a Jeopardy game maker with buzzer support
I cannot find this button. :( It also took me multiple reloads to find the menu button since it disappears after a few seconds. My eyes are drawn to the board and not the upper left hand corner.
gamerDude··on Show HN: Radius – A Meetup.com alternative
I signed up because meetup failed me too. I used to be a host of events, but after things got so much about making money, the group just sucked.

However, I signed up for yours but there is no way to see other groups etc. so, I don't think what you have is meetup yet, just private event hosting. I hope you decide to make some groups have a public option so the events can find people outside their network to come.

gamerDude··on Half of Americans say Public K-12 Education is Going In The Wrong Direction
As someone working in EdTech, I think the idea of schools being underfunded is very complicated.

School Districts horribly mismanage their budgets. One of the largest school districts in the country and one of my clients just didn't know how much money they had spent for two years. So, their solution was to not renew any contracts the following year. Didn't matter how important they were, you were only safe if you had a multi-year contract (which thankfully I did). The people who are making spending choices in districts are often clueless about how to spend money or think about ROI.

Some schools are likely underfunded. But they also just need financial literacy training.

gamerDude··on Why you should not apply to YC
To me, this tweet seemed much more anti startup trying to grow big than anything anti-YC. Only using the tweet for marketing as mentioned at the bottom.

At first, it's against dedicating your life to your startup (which presumably you are already doing or at least want to do) and then states that YC actually has a good success rate for unicorns.

Then he talks about doing some brainstorming to find ideas and product market fit, but at least from my perspective YC doesn't advocate for this at all, but rather talking to customers, getting their buy in and then making something that solves customer problems. Aka, not brainstorming at all.

And then goes on to say that YC has lots of young people rather than older (more likely to be successful founders). But doesn't do any of the data diligence on percent of founders by age by industry and by YC vs. not.

And finally he focuses on saying that only the unicorns were success stories and no one else, while advocating that you should aim for a smaller goal. But doesn't acknowledge any data of companies from YC that aren't unicorns but are still operating, sold for less than a billion, etc.

I personally think that looking from the outside that YC is not for everyone and is geared towards the VC route. But if you want those things, then these arguments aren't valid for why you wouldn't apply.

gamerDude··on Show HN: Term Typer – Learn a language by typing
Overall, I really like this. Know English, Learning Spanish.

I wish that you wouldn't automatically move to the next word when I finish typing. I want to read it over again and process, then move forward.

gamerDude··on Ask HN: 57 sales totaling $1,539 for micro-SaaS? Is the idea dead?
You may have also found a market, but don't have the right product. If you are chatting and building a relationship with 57 people, is there something in common for them that they would be willing to pay continuously for? Or more for?

Sometimes your idea isn't worth scaling, but rather just focus on serving the people you've found and give them more and more value.

gamerDude··on Show HN: Phrasing – learn every language, to any level
Trying to sign up and getting an "Email rate limit exceeded" error.

Hopefully you see this and can keep your user sign ups flowing!

gamerDude··on Reasons to grow and keep big muscles
That may be a reason to start, but most people that I know that consistently work out learn to enjoy it. For me, it helps me release emotions and feel more focused in the day.

Being fit definitely has its social benefits in romance, but it isn't the reason I go when it's far below freezing out at 730 in the morning.

Research also backs this. That the people who keep going find ways to enjoy it and not for the long term hope of losing weight or looking fit.
