game-of-throws··on Remote Attestation is coming back
Strongly agree.

We've already seen shades of this in banking. After chips were added to credit cards, people started having their chargebacks denied because "our records show the card was physically present" (even if the charge originated in another country)

How long until companies try to deny responsibility for data leaks because "our records show Windows was fully up-to-date and secure"

game-of-throws··on Remote Attestation is coming back
The danger is one day there might be no options that don't require remote attestation on Windows and Chrome.

Your bank doesn't allow Linux? Choose another bank! ... but what happens once every bank has those requirements?

game-of-throws··on Reference count, don't garbage collect
I wouldn't call it a GC. It's more like an arena allocator, with the arenas managed by the OS :)

Does Google usually fire people when they shut down a service? I thought they were transferred internally to help build the next messaging app.
game-of-throws··on I won a suit against a party that sent me an unsolicited text message
Different situation. Bulk mail is not illegal, in fact the USPS subsidizes it. Spam calls ARE illegal.

USPS will always deliver mail, but you can refuse to accept it. If your mail carrier doesn't follow procedure, then... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

https://faq.usps.com/s/article/Refuse-unwanted-mail-and-remo...

I agree with your other points. Stop the subsidies. I'm not sure why spam makes me so irrationally angry, but it does.

There's a big difference between "freedom of speech" and "requirement to listen". You can speak all you like, but you cannot intrude upon others and force everyone to listen to you.

I'm not constitutionally required to let political campaigners onto my private property (my home), and I shouldn't be required to receive their text messages on my private property (my phone).

game-of-throws··on WebContainers are now supported in Firefox on desktop and Android
That's remote development, and you don't need a web-based UI to do it. There's also JetBrains IDEs, any terminal editor over SSH, and probably plenty of other editors I haven't looked into.
game-of-throws··on I won a suit against a party that sent me an unsolicited text message
The whole point of this scheme is that it treats all callers equally, and works without needing to distinguish legal from illegal calls.

> In a world where we pay for stamps, why didn't bulk unsolicited mail go away? Why would it work for telephones?

Different situation. Bulk mail is not illegal, in fact the USPS subsidizes it. Spam calls ARE illegal. Hopefully phone carriers will not give discounts for explicitly illegal uses of their networks, but we can deal with that later if it happens.

> As we head into election season, a lot of us are going to get unsolicited text messages like this. You too can sue for them!

Can you elaborate? Every source I've seen says that politicians have exempted themselves from the spam laws. e.g. a random google result: https://www.cincinnati.com/story/news/politics/elections/202...

> That's because the National Do Not Call Registry does not apply to political text messages.

If you know a way around this, please spill the beans!

Why wouldn't this solve the problem? Phone calls have a real cost, however small it may be, to both the recipient and the carriers. Everyone accepts paying for stamps. What makes paying for calls different, and such an abhorrent idea that we shouldn't even discuss it?

EDIT: Parent comment was replaced with something completely different so my reply makes no longer makes sense, but I'm leaving it unchanged.

"We are likely to break this law, therefore we shouldn't be punished when it happens"? Classic.

The US has a similar problem with CAN-SPAM. Ordinary citizens cannot sue.[1] All you can do is complain to the FTC, after which of course nothing will happen.

It makes these laws rather toothless if they're not actually enforced.

2. The economy is more than just gas

game-of-throws··on Ask HN: How to effectively jam audio speakers?
You have two choices:

1. Build an EMP generator

2. Move your family away from the mafia

Option 1 may be more fun, but I recommend you just get out of there. Life is too short.

If you had gotten out of the house more, you might have learned that we live in an incredibly diverse world, and not everyone needs to grow up exactly like you did.

So she's grabbing other people's kids off the street? She sounds unhinged. I'd do everything I could to get a restraining order.
