galtwho··on Commission says Ireland granted undue tax benefits of up to €13B to Apple
>> as AAPL literally stole money from both US and EU people

Well you have US Govt now arguing on behalf of Apple, which suggests that US people were not going to be the losers.

The losers are people of other countries where Apple and other MNC's don't pay their fair share of taxes.

The plan is to hoard this money in low tax jurisdictions and I guess for 2 purposes 1. wait for a lower tax rate amnesty to be offered in US 2. use cash hoard to undertake overseas acquisitions to grow the US Company and by extension US influence.

Apple finds it better to take loans out in US for its cash needs there and write them off against US incomes inspite of sitting on more than 100b in cash reserves.

galtwho··on The French Number – Connect to a random French person and talk about anything
well it is outlawed, which mean illegal.. its illegal because it violates some aspect of freedom, liberalism or human rights..

so it is not hypocritical.

It is hypocritical to claim liberalism but outlaw a person right to wear clothing of their choice in public areas...

galtwho··on The French Number – Connect to a random French person and talk about anything
what do you mean by not integrating?

part of the colonisers spiel to the colonised is aboyut human rights, freedom and liberty.

galtwho··on The French Number – Connect to a random French person and talk about anything
>> instead people seemingly are coming to the liberal and liberated countries with a distant goal of making them as backward and oppressive as the countries they left/fled.

I see this line in "liberal" countries and find it hypocritical.

Part of being liberal is the freedom to adopt any legal practices that makes you happy. If "liberal" countries think XYZ practices are backward or oppressive, make it illegal and file cases against people violating it.

Asking others to follow unwritten rules isn't fair.

Many liberals are unhappy that immigrants haven't integrated and by this, they want immigrants to adopt language, dress, food and religion(mainly Atheism) of the majority. It is hard to make these things illegal and still call yourself as a liberal.

galtwho··on We’re in a Low-Growth World. How Did We Get Here?
I disagree that the economy lost out in the situation you gave.

In the absence of your success, some other games developer generated 600K of benefit for the economy. + or - a few 1000's

yeah sure his game would have been crappier than yours

galtwho··on Salesforce buys word processing app Quip for $750M
How does it work when Person A,B & C equally owns Company X which has cash reserves of 10m and liabilities of 10m

Person A & B also own Company Y.

Company X buys out Company Y for 5m which later leads to bankruptcy of Company X with creditors left holding the can.

How is conflict of interest treated here? What if Person C also has equal shares in Company Y. Is Company X debarred from buying Company Y. Can creditors sue Company X directors ?

galtwho··on Bloody Plant Burger Smells, Tastes and Sizzles Like Meat
it is not. Atleast as per this UK study[1]

Which suggest lots of Indian vegetarian food is indeed healthy

galtwho··on Bloody Plant Burger Smells, Tastes and Sizzles Like Meat
>> the typical indian isn't any more healthier than say the typical american if we're just looking at diet alone.

but is eating tasty non-meat food that is lot less destructive to the environment.

that cuts to the meat of the argument against non meat( which in the West means fake meat or vegan foods) being non tasty..

galtwho··on Will humans keep getting taller?
I think the confusion comes from defining what is a "fitter" organism?

and if we keep to trend, its quite likely we will bring Idiocracy[1] to fruition

galtwho··on This is the most demonically clever computer security attack I've seen in years
Can something like this be used to tamper with the Blackbox type voting machines used in India?

If so, why have there not been much of a hue and cry about it.

galtwho··on Apple, Microsoft, and Google hold 23% of all U.S. corporate cash
>> Apple, Google, Microsoft, and the like are holding masses of cash outside the USA.

a large part of this cash is from the tax not paid in countries in Europe, Asia, Australia.

America was always going to get a hand on this money and that seems to be the reason there has been no movement in international tax negotiations.

An American Cash repatriation holiday is way overdue now.. Tax that should have been paid to other countries will get paid in US.

galtwho··on India set to start massive project to divert Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers
>> if we think the government of a bigger nation which is responsible only to its own citizens can act to protect everyone's interests.

In the case of India it does. Even though it is changing and they are unfortunately adopting the individualistic philosophy of the west..

When the UNSC was being setup post WW-II, India canvassed against its own candidature for China

After testing its N Bomb, it gave up working on it actively to help build a N free world. Willingly stated a no first use principle.

Released 92000 Pak PoW after the 1971 war for no quid pro quo.

You don't hear these stuff in western media. Hell, we don't hear of regular state and federal elections held in the world biggest democracy.

to get an idea of what I am talking about and how the Indian philosophy is rooted in us all being one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3srSwuG9kVw

galtwho··on India set to start massive project to divert Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers
I think the equation is whether to srve the interests of 300-400 million indians living in these areas or that of 100+ million in Bangladesh.

even then India has acted generally to protect everyone's interest vis a vis other countries like US who allow millions in Africa to starve to protect the interest of a few 100 US farmers.

galtwho··on Why the S.E.C. didn't hit Goldman Sachs harder
and the problem with unwritten rules is that it is majority who knows best on how to read them.

when you don't run within the majority culture you are always making mistakes in their interpretation

and then you have law officers who choose to make examples every now and then.

guess who gets booked?

PS : one of the advantages of privilege

Wife left him in "rural india" means went back to her parents place... very rarely does it mean shacked up with another guy..

Based on how the story is described, I can understand Shanthi's decision and the guys acceptance of her back.

galtwho··on Are We Living in a Computer Simulation?
In some eastern religions

The universe is seen as a dream of 'God'. Which means start of a dream is like Big Bang and waking from dream is like extinction of Universe.

galtwho··on Are We Living in a Computer Simulation?
Are the characters in our dreams sentient? They surely seem so and many of our dreams are elaborate and seem to obey natural laws.

Then there are some dreams where the natural laws seem different. I can fly and fly well in those and observe well as well and be observed. What do I make of those. Are beings sentient in them?

galtwho··on How Gut Bacteria Are Shaking Up Cancer Research
One of the best fermented foods to have is the South Indian Breakfast of Idli( Iddly).

This batter can be bought in Indian Grocery stores or prepared at home

A similar batter is used to make Indian pancakes called Dosa as well.

There are also a host of Appams & String Hoppers made with different fermented batters in South India and SriLanka.

In addition many South Indians enjoy fermented rice which is basically leftover cooked rice that gets soaked in water and left overnight. Its a staple breakkie or Lunch for many poor families with some Yogurt, pickle, chutney or a green chilly.

galtwho··on War Is a Racket (1935)
This. We are all played for suckers.

This is partly why I wish for Trump to get the top job. The amount of window dressing in society will come down drastically as the clown makes misjudgements at every turn and contradicts himself by the hour.

galtwho··on Chicago Police Hid Mics, Destroyed Dashcams to Block Audio, Records Show
this is inspite of it having extremely low rape incidences as a %.

People have no clue how large and diverse the place is and are always generalizing.

and I have very rarely come across police misbehaving the way I read here or even come across violent street crimes. I am sure it occurs though as the films love portraying the extreme scenarios but the ordinary person isn't scared for his/her life or safety.

galtwho··on U.S. blocks Philips' $3.3B sale of Lumileds to Asian buyers
Why? do you think USA national security isn't worth more than a billion?

How can you have a doubt after all that we have known post-Snowden

galtwho··on U.S. blocks Philips' $3.3B sale of Lumileds to Asian buyers
there is no doubt it is. Surely this should be a given even before knowing about the snowden saga. After snowden saga we all should know this as a fact.
galtwho··on Expect Some Unicorns to Lose Their Horns, and It Won’t Be Pretty
By same token investors should be assured only a % of their principal in case of down rounds. You want the big payoff you have to take the big risk.

To be assured the whole principal or 2X is ensuring that the risk is transferred to other parties.

galtwho··on Expect Some Unicorns to Lose Their Horns, and It Won’t Be Pretty
Zukerberg managed to get such investors. If investors want in on the game, then they need to make the sacrifice.

If the company wants the investor money, they make the sacrifice.

whoever is desperate loses more.

galtwho··on Expect Some Unicorns to Lose Their Horns, and It Won’t Be Pretty
except for the fact that Employees and founders salary is generally below market rate while at the same time they are expected to work more than standard hrs( 8 Hrs?? ) and be available 24x7 to fix issues. Equity with promises of big payout is given as a reason to take such such a deal over a job at a Bank.

Now these employees and founders know that these promises are empty and the example provided above is one good way to keep the promise.

Lots of investors expect Founders to take a salary needed to survive and also don't get paid for the sacrifices already made.( its assumed their equity stake makes up for the difference)

galtwho··on Show HN: Would love some feedback on my weekend project (built in 3 days)
A few issues I came across

1. Sign up btn on main page didn't seem to work but the one at the bottom worked. I browsed aroudn a bit before I clicked on signup and not sure if that had a effect.

2. Post sign up, I got a tool tip asking to create a task. But there were no other texts on screen. I can see a few button and even a arrow menu(top right corner) and none of these have a text in them.

I will check again later
