gala8y··on Ventoy: Multi-boot USB Drive Tool [video]
It's very practical. Set it up and forget it. Later just throw in and remove iso images and data at will.
gala8y··on Google Drive files suddenly disappeared
> This is the first major data loss story I've heard related to drive in, what, a decade? 5 years?

Not bad, but still... no copy, no data.

gala8y··on Google Drive files suddenly disappeared
Yes, you just can't have data in one copy if you care about it. It's a cliche at this point: There are two kinds of people... those who do backups and those who will. I upgraded involuntarily long time ago.

gala8y··on Ask HN: Which book do you keep asking people to read?
Some book suggestions from another thread: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=36429792 The last one changed my life completely. ;)
gala8y··on Ask HN: Which book do you keep asking people to read?
Nabokov ends one of the most captivating fragments of Pale Fire with a sentence "I trust the reader has enjoyed this note."

He totally got me.

It is not the book I would recommend most often, it just came to my mind.

What I would recommend the most are psychological books. 'Mind and Nature' by Gregory Bateson is one of my favorites.

Posts like this one are awesome, always happy to sieve through.

gala8y··on Show HN: Sonic Garbage
Cool. It's awesome already (selection of sounds is the key for me). Best!
gala8y··on After OpenAI's blowup, it seems pretty clear that 'AI safety' isn't a real thing
> ...and I am hoping all nuclear missiles are air gapped anyway...

These are running on hardware from 50's. We can sleep softly.

gala8y··on Ask HN: Did Elon/Twitter face any consequences after it stopped paying rent?
Yesterday there was an article (or a rant) here which was flagged.

https://gkeenan.co/avgb/an-inordinate-amount-of-our-attentio...

Author describes Musk like this: "Dude will literally drop $44 billion to buy a website instead of going to therapy.", which is a funny way to say that he _should_ go to therapy, with which I agree.

Oh, and the whole thing is about OAI.

gala8y··on Show HN: Sonic Garbage
This is fantastic. Selection of sounds is very interesting. It sets your brain on the quest of transderivational search, traversing his own spaces to find (derive) meaning when hearing these snippets of speech. They are ambiguous enough to really f$Y^k it up a bit, so process unfolds a bit more than usually.

Maybe currently looped squares in one column could not overlap, but that would be needed if this was some mixing table and it is not (it is a bit). It's awesome!

I really would love to hear some back story on why (eg. sounds selection).

gala8y··on Things That Aren't Doing The Thing
True story.

This reminds me of The Cult of Done Manifesto. Nicely put.

Usually I dont care, but this long weekend is pure joy and I learn a lot in these hard to grasp realms of how things/people work.
gala8y··on Earth likely briefly passed critical warming threshold on Friday and Saturday
Exactly my point. Systemic thinking and action at its best.
gala8y··on Earth likely briefly passed critical warming threshold on Friday and Saturday
Yeah, I was referring to this past move of EU as being particularly effective one to combat plastic pollution. EDIT: But you are right, banning single-use plastic bags is a first step. Let's keep walking.
gala8y··on Earth likely briefly passed critical warming threshold on Friday and Saturday
Let us do not forget about plastic straws. Let's ban plastic straws.
gala8y··on OpenAI's misalignment and Microsoft's gain
Great summary.

We are very complicated creatures and things get out of control, both internally and externally. My armchair opinion is that they started to believe that all of it is so advanced and important, that they lost a bit of a grip on reality. Sutskever imagining planet covered with data centers and solar panels shows me that [0]. Every single person is limited in his/her view - I get a strange feeling when listening to him in this video. Also, they are not the only people left on this planet. Fortunately, this task of creating AI/AGI is not a task for a pack of ten, trying to save us from harm. Still, it may and probably will get rough. /rant

Also, you just stated the fact, so there is no 'mentality' to it, I believe.

gala8y··on Origami-Inspired Bi-Directional Actuator with Orthogonal Actuation
Cool, thanks for the answer. This is a legitimate reason to do so and doing so trumps other factors. Funny. Contexts.

> It's the opposite of "fake it til you make it".

I like this level when you can show off what you do, play with it, enjoy it _and_ provide value. Showing off preferably being the smallest part in the mix.

gala8y··on Origami-Inspired Bi-Directional Actuator with Orthogonal Actuation
In fact I did look some more at their stuff, thx.

> The ball is rather clever.

Sure there are pluses here, but I thought about parking the thing (because) it needs to use energy for balancing while not parked, doesn't it? Future looks weird - one hand robots on spheres roaming through rooms with thick carpets...

gala8y··on Staring at a Wall: Embracing Deliberate Boredom
At least one must be prepared for some unpleasantness. All these sensations, thoughts and feelings bubble up. You kind of go through them. With prolonged meditation (like for days) it gets really strong sometimes.
gala8y··on Staring at a Wall: Embracing Deliberate Boredom
I wonder if this "stay in the way of it and let it hit you like a track..." piece is his wording.

Three years ago I was really grieving lost relationship, floating (not drowning) in sadness... and I found this piece of electronic music by San and Tac [0] with these words placed in the background. I would listen to this song and one day I realized, walking in a park, that I could really let it in. And I did... at it was beautiful...

gala8y··on Fair coins tend to land on the same side they started
This. When I tried to comment briefly yesterday that the coin falls on the same side, only then did I remember that I actually did that and that it has nothing to do with physics but rather neuroscience (and innocently bent morality - which was also the object of my internal observations). then I remembered that I had actually considered different coin sizes, but I was never as thorough in my attempts to bend the results as you were. oh... the playgrounds of childhoods...
gala8y··on Verb Your Nouns (2020)
In linguistics process of turning verb into a noun is called nominalization. When you do that, you are not talking about processes any more.
