gaiusparx··on Google Removing H.264 Support in Chrome
Sad move, the web take years to more or less standardize on H264. Ain't WebM an inferior alternative at the moment? The reason cited "our resources directed towards completely open codec technologies.", so we can expect Flash to be removed as well? I can see next up in the horizon: YouTube to remove H264 support.
gaiusparx··on Verizon iPhone 4
My guess is iPhone 5 will support both GSM and LTE in one hardware. It will look similar to iPhone 4 and and both CDMA iPhone4 and iPhone5 will be available on Verizon, just like iPhone 3GS is still selling.
gaiusparx··on Big ideas from "Inspired" that helped me feel more confident as an entrepreneur
Any idea where can I purchase an epub version? I try not to buy printed book and I have no access to Kindle.
gaiusparx··on StackOverflow clone, created entirely with Redis and jQuery
Agreed. It also highlights that you don't need an mvc frameworks for web app. Due to the popularity of framework such as Rails, many assume a framework is the only way to go. Powerful client JavaScript library is changing how people develop web apps.
gaiusparx··on Verizon to finally get iPhone
Hong Kong and Singapore has similar rules by their authorities. In one way you can say US prefers to practice free market. Or you can say US government does not care about their citizens. Or US government treats their corporations better than people.
gaiusparx··on Can Google Get Its Mojo Back?
We must thank Google for its contribution and effort to fight off computing monopolies. Enterprise with Google Apps vs Microsoft, Android vs Apple, coming soon xxxMe vs FaceBook, AppEngine/Boutique vs Amazon. But this is kind of spreading too thin and fighting the whole world alone. Looks like its their destiny rather than their vision.

ps. Arrington should put forward the question to the CEO and post the video, like he did to others.

ps. Its too early to write off Google TV. Chrome browser and Android are great success.

gaiusparx··on VLC for iOS Pulled from the App Store
According to TUAW http://www.tuaw.com/2011/01/08/vlc-app-removed-from-app-stor..., its one Rémi Denis-Courmont employed under Nokia who waged the campaign. How true is it? Sounds more like a corporate conspiracy than a fight for principle.
gaiusparx··on Facebook hype will fade
Facebook is definitely waning among my friends, but strong areas remains:

1. Social graph. Many are not active Facebook users but are keeping the accounts cos all their contacts are there. Facebook has actually helped people found their long loss friends and classmates.

2. Sharing links, picture and video. Facebook is replacing email as a means to share interesting contents. One friend actually visits Facebook just to read those contents posted by friends instead of going to the source such as YouTube. "It is easier". Twitter is an obvious alternative.

3. Facebook is the new Flickr.

4. Games. Hopefully when people think of FarmVille or CityVille they think of Zynga and not Facebook. Zynga should seriously break loose of this eco, build its own currency/credit system and focus on iOS/Android platforms.

5. All-in-one ness. Grandmas and aunties love this. Contacts, photos, video, links, cute apps are all-in-one. But this will mean less and less, as this group of not savvy web users will decrease with time.

gaiusparx··on Chart of YC companies' hosting decisions, 2010 edition
I have to agree there is no such a need when you just started. Just go over to Google Apps and its done. Unless your service is build around or require email such as Posterous.
gaiusparx··on Mac App Store DRM broken (Here's how)
Guess version 2 of the game will be called Very Angry Birds with pirates as targets. Or pirates are really pigs?
gaiusparx··on Mac App Store: Open for Business
Apple has specifically mentioned that no trialware or Lite version of app is allowed on Mac App Store, and advise developer to host such version on their own. Good move by Apple.
gaiusparx··on Mac App Store: Open for Business
Guess the UI is in transition to a more standardized one in Lion.
gaiusparx··on Google shows off Android 3.0, the 'Entirely for Tablet' Honeycomb (video)
I hope Google will bring Android to the notebook/desktop, make it a rich platforms so that we can finally have Photoshop running on Linux. I'm guessing this is probably the direction: Apple has the same OS code base for phone, tablet and desktop; Microsoft is trying the same with its porting of Windows to ARM processor, targeting tablets.
gaiusparx··on [dead]
When reading ruby+rails+sproutcore+expert I immediately thought of Yehuda Katz. Maybe Apple can consult him?
gaiusparx··on Ask HN: getting married tonight - tips for success?
1. Watch out when she starts to call your computer your second wife or mistress. You need more time for her. 2. Don't buy her geek toys/gadgets as gifts. 3. Make her the priority, not the new venture.

As for tonight, just relax, enjoy and make her feel wanted and loved.

gaiusparx··on The 2010 cloud computing winner
EC2/S3 and Azure is in a different league than AppEngine. AppEngine is more similar to Heroku. If you use AppEngine to compare with EC2/S3, then we have another Google lemon adding to an already long list such as Orkut, Waves etc
gaiusparx··on A response to "Erlang - overhyped or underestimated"
Strange to see there are people concerning about different syntax in different languages. Kind of like expecting Chinese language to have the same grammar as English.
gaiusparx··on Paul Buchheit: Chrome OS Will Perish Or “Merge” With Android
Centrally managed enterprise computing exists since the beginning with mainframe with dumb terminals. And you have Citrix thin client or vmware virtual client infrastructure for such purpose. ChromeOS is trying to solve the same problem, the problem of IT management rather than users need, experience and the advance of end user computing. ChromeOS if successful is not a good idea for the future of computing, where I believe an intelligent and powerful client is needed for the advancement of user-computing interaction design. ChromsOS reenforce the idea that computing is about the web with a screen and a keyboard. Cloud computing is more than just http right?
gaiusparx··on Ask HN: What is the point of Chrome's web store?
App Store for smartphones is more about lock-in than app discovery. If a consumer has too much invested in iOS apps and games for example, his/her next phone upgrade will most likely be still iPhone.
gaiusparx··on Erlang and OTP in Action
The only book that covers OTP in depth. Cesarini and Armstrong one are equally essential for learning Erlang programming.
gaiusparx··on Poll: An iPad application to better present HN?
I use ihackernews.com
gaiusparx··on What the HTTP is CouchApp?
Where normally does a couchapp put its application/business logic? At client side javascript?
gaiusparx··on Google Launches Plugin That Fuses Microsoft Office With Google Docs
So the web app/client is not The client that rules them all. Native client does have its place and is growing without a doubt.
gaiusparx··on Things I would love to see in iOS 5
- API to run some form of background task as needed - Revamp notification, maybe notification centre - API to change home screen icon. - API for NFC as it is rumored to be in iPhone 5 hardware - Spotlight API for app content searchable under spotlight - AirPlay 2 - api to push screen to AppleTV and convert iphone/ipad as controller, make it easy to support this functionality in games - API for social liking and following, Apple'own social networking build into iOS 5 and Lion - Apple Messages/Chat, telco independent sms?
gaiusparx··on [dead]
Unlikely as they just released iTunes 10.1 last week. I don't see them pushing another iTunes client release within 2 weeks.
gaiusparx··on The real reason behind the fast version incrementing of Chrome
> bumping the version so we look hot, fresh, and new to our new friends

You will look old when hit version 10.

gaiusparx··on The Instapaper Default.png dilemma
iPhone User Interface Guideline recommends design a launch image that is identical to the first screen of app, and avoid a splash/about screen and branding elements.

gaiusparx··on Facebook Slaps Google: “Openness Doesn’t Mean Being Open When It’s Convenient”
To make peace, maybe Google should buy Facebook. Or is it the other way round?
gaiusparx··on Lawsuit: Apple turned iPhone 3Gs into "iBricks" to boost iPhone 4
Just curious what kind of damages is Ms Wofford is able to get from such lawsuit if she wins? an iPhone 4 or millions? The lawyer costs more than an iPhone 4 right?
gaiusparx··on Disneyland with the Death Penalty
Singapore is no longer a Disneyland as there are now two casinos, one is by Sands.
