gaiusparx··on Today is World Backup Day
I use some of this advice: http://sanziro.com/2011/01/practical-guide-for-data-backup-o...
gaiusparx··on WWDC sold out in ten hours.
I hope Apple will repeat the same event at a venue in Asia Pacific to cater for the other half of the world. Maybe at Sydney, Shanghai, HongKong or Singapore.
gaiusparx··on Apple announces WWDC: June 6-10, preview of OS X & iOS
Discount will never happen as the seats are booked solid very quickly. It is price that high partly due to high demand. If it is priced at $500, all the seats will be taken within minutes. I hope Apple will follow last WWDC by releasing the session videos free into iTunes U after the event.
gaiusparx··on Erlang.org's new website look
Congratulation! Better look. Under Links->Erlang applications and projects, please consider to include Erlang apps such as Riak, RabbitMQ, CouchDB, ejabberd, Mochiweb, Webmachine and Zotonic.
gaiusparx··on Ios, Android, WP7 - who cares?
People have been driving for web interface to rule them all for more than 10 years now. It will never happen in our life time. Those asking for web interface are mainly driving from tech management point of view, one development and interface for all devices and platforms. But consumers don't care and that's why the past few years we see the rise of native mobile interfaces. I see a future where native interface continues to rule, where the web is more the backend glues and data that network all together. Web interface might take a back seat when new generations user interface becomes standard. Touch has just become the standard, imagine a future with kinect like or advanced voice interface. Native interface on purpose build interface devices will have the opportunity to progress and advance the way we interface with the net and computer.
gaiusparx··on Google to Launch Major New Social Network Called Circles, Possibly Today
Sounds promising with the ability to separate family with friends. And Google Circles is better name than Google Me! Let's hope its viable alternative to FB.
gaiusparx··on Which iPad 2 to buy?
I wonder if the author actually own a first generation iPad. 16GB is enough if you have only one screenful of apps and games. 16GB is definitely not enough if you ever play games such as Infinity Blade (850M), Fifa 11 (1.2G), Real Racing 2 etc. And even GarageBand is over 400M. How about your mp3? movie files and ebooks? 32GB is more adequate.

And iPad 3 will be March 2012. It is too soon. iPad 2 might not even complete its worldwide launch by fall. The Fall rumour most likely is a 6 inch iPod touch launching in September iPod event.

gaiusparx··on Facebook bans Adsense in all applications, driving Google out of Facebook.com
Facebook will then sing it big together with Bing, which might work towards Bing's advantage. I can see in a future Bing and Facebook eating more and more into Google's advertising dollar. Which can only be good as in competition is good.
gaiusparx··on Steve Jobs' reality distortion takes its toll on truth
I'm not sure why an article to rant about a common marketing practice? Earnings call bashing Android, Google IO attacks Apple, so on and on. Is Steve reaching the status of a saint and not allow to bash?
gaiusparx··on Breakup Notifier Shut Down By Facebook
You need a Facebook App Breakup Notifier app.
gaiusparx··on An Open Letter to Apple on the Readability App rejection
Apple's side: Imagine most popular newspapers and magazines sites use Google One Pass to collect subscriptions fees via website, and offer free iOS app to consume the content. Apple collects nothing. I'm not totally with Apple but they have their points.
gaiusparx··on Chinese: Simplified, Traditional, Mandarin or Cantonese (The Simple Answer)
Forgotten to mention, Simplified is a simplified version of Traditional, so words can be translated directly one to one. Simplified just makes the Traditional word easier and simpler to write. When you translate to either one, you basically already target both.
gaiusparx··on Chinese: Simplified, Traditional, Mandarin or Cantonese (The Simple Answer)
I think the article is not a good summary. For translation work for written products, web, apps etc you need to do both Simplified and Traditional. Traditional is used in Taiwan and Hong Kong, with the rest of the world follow China's standard use of Simplified.

For spoken language, Mandarin is the standard, the official one. The rest of spoken languages such as Cantonese, Hokkien etc are dialects depending on your province in China and community.

If it is the first time you are learning about Chinese languages, learn Mandarin and Simplified/Tradition written language.

gaiusparx··on Poor Man's Erlang IRC Client
You might want to post to erlang-questions mailing list for comments. http://www.erlang.org/faq.html

Thanks for posting. It's great to see more and more people into erlang.

gaiusparx··on Some thoughts on Emacs and Vim
Why I choose Emacs http://eatingair.com/post/2829859704/why-i-choose-emacs-over...
gaiusparx··on The Next Six Months
My prediction:

* Apple will keep April as the refresh month for iPad. Putting iPad in the same iPod event will steal thunder and is no good. And component supplies is tighter for iPad thus it takes few months to meet the demand and September is too tight to the holidays season. When iPad 2 is launched in April, the rest of the world will get it by Jun-Aug which ensure Apple can manufacture enough to meet year end holiday demand.

* There will be no iOS 5 this year. At June WWDC, Lion will be the focus and Apple will give sneak peak of iOS 5 at the event, with beta available in early 2012, ship in June 2012. Aple needs to get its developers ready and it takes time. iOS 5 will share the code base of Lion and will ship after Lion. iOS 5 will include user interface elements changes. I think Apple is keeping two years release cycle for major OS release.

* There will be iOS 4.4/4.5 this year for: iPhone 5, NFC capability, AppleTV 3, App Store for AppleTV and App/Games on AppleTV.

gaiusparx··on AppVita - Collection of great webapps
Site is similar to http://greatwebapps.com/ which is up for sale.
gaiusparx··on The Rise And Fall of Languages in 2010
Alternative opinion: http://langpop.com/
gaiusparx··on Briss Trims PDFs so They Fit Better, Are Easier to Read on Your Ereader
PDF is ill fitted to be the format for mobile devices due to its format-for-print purpose with no text-overflow. Its time epub and mobi takes over.
gaiusparx··on Power user replacements for OS X default apps
Just realized I'm not a power user if I use Safari. Damn Apple.
gaiusparx··on I've run out of programming languages to study
>> HTML, SQL, C, Java, Objective-C, Prolog, Common Lisp, CLOS, J, Scheme, Ocaml, Haskell, Agda, Oz, Reversible programming, Quantum algorithms to name a few.

You miss out the rising stars of programming languages: Erlang and Clojure.

gaiusparx··on Ask HN: Can Hacker News be considered a social network?
HN News lacks two features that are predominant in social network site: follow people and like postings. I would not call HN News social networking. I'm hoping HN News can add like/favorite feature so that I can bookmarked posts/discussion right within HN News.
gaiusparx··on Google "not happy" with slow Android app sales
Sounds like an excuse for their lame marketplace which paid apps are not available in many countries. They do not make it easy for developers of paid apps. Why are they not happy? They are cornering app developers into free app+ advertising model (eg AngryBirds) and they should be very happy with the fat AdMob dollars.
gaiusparx··on Introducing Amazon Simple Email Service
It is also now simpler to create competitive alternative to mailchimp as you can just focus on the user experience and features rather than delivery. Great opportunity for startups.
gaiusparx··on Show HN: PilarHQ, The Posterous of Customer Support
Posterous is really not too well known outside of tech circle. Even for people who know and use it, more will think of it as a blog rather than "email to blog". To understand your product, people need to learn what is Posterous first. Its best to avoid such association in marketing.
gaiusparx··on Does Google do "research"?
Isn't what Google practicing a kind of applied research? Where MS Research is doing basic research which advances the science.
gaiusparx··on Google already knows its search sucks (and is working to fix it)
Maybe it means most people will give up instead of trying to click through too many pages of results. Its might be more effective to go to specific sites sometimes, example Wikipedia for general info, imdb for movies, stackoverflow for programming topics, amazon.com for product review.
gaiusparx··on Google Removing H.264 Support in Chrome
Google as always wants us to use their beta software. This thread has generated much debates. I'm always suspicious when big corporation touts ideology as their cause. Don't fall into the pray. Just asked the question "Where is the money?" and you can guess the real reason for their move. Google seems to think that they have the clouts to influence all area of humanity, in this case the audio/visual entertainment industry that includes set top boxes, chip and hardware makers etc. They are fighter all wars (MS Office, iPhone, Bing, Facebook) by spreading themselves thinly. I believe these few years will see the start of decline of Google as a company.
gaiusparx··on Who's Afraid of the Verizon iPhone?
The effect is a larger percentage of Android users will switch to iPhone compared with the other round. Android OS should start to innovate and be different, rather than look like a shanzhai version of iOS. But I have no faith in Google phone UI design, they should have bought webOS and be done with.
gaiusparx··on I Don't Like Google Mobile
Thanks for highlighting. I will be switching to Bing on my iPhone.
