Don't hate the player, hate the game. If it gets them a better job and more money, good luck to them.
gadders··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov

This is a bit of a departure - I normally read action thrillers where a retired navy SEAL foils a plot to bring down the US Government.

Also listening to the audiobook autobiography of Anthony Hopkins which I recommend.

Alcohol is bad for you, but it's only "red meat" bad, not "smoking cigarettes" bad.

However, you have to weigh that cancer risk against the benefits of alcohol. Plenty of people wouldn't exist if their parents had never drunk.

The source is the experiences of friends, neighbours, colleagues as well as newspaper stories.
gadders··on 500k facial scans at UK stations yield no arrests, 1 false positive
..And the broken windows theory of prosecuting minor crime to deter major crime worked pretty well in Guiliani New York.

You also need to factor in how the police won't actually turn up for most crimes, so there is no point reporting unless you need to do so for insurance policies.

Also, clicking through, you can see the whole report is some panglossian delusion aimed at making Reform supporters look bad.

gadders··on Who Killed Paulina Borsook's Career?
There used to be a Novell Netware engineer called Randy Bender, which caused a lot of mirth in the UK in the 90s.
gadders··on 13 Months Sober (2025)
When did "sober" take over from "teetotal" for someone who will long-term abstain from alcohol?

I'm sober right now but won't be tonight when I have a couple of glasses of wine in front of the TV.

Oh man, he'll probably just have to eke out a living on $300m or something to last him the rest of his life. It will be tough.

They will likely never become productive members of society.
gadders··on Has Violence Against Teachers Become Accepted by Society?
I think the author needs to define exactly which piece of society he is referring to, otherwise the article is meaningless.

Does this work?

----

Police have arrested and questioned 3 of my mates from our private WhatsApp group chat. They're asking to speak to me too, but I'm working abroad.

They've all been arrested and had interviews under s127 of the Communications Act.

There's 4 of us in a group chat on WhatsApp where we chat and also make some edgy jokes and stuff. We're two white, an Indian and a black guy who studied at uni together.

All three of them have been arrested and interviewed today. I don't know anyrhing more than this. This info comes from their gf and fiance.

I'm working abroad but I have received a WhatsApp message and attempted call from a UK officer who identified himself wanting to speak to me about an ongoing enquiry into a reported issue.

My mate's fiance says it was reported by another guy's ex who he dumped 4 weeks ago. I'm inclined to believe that as the officer's message said he was acting on a report.

The thing is, we shared a lot of edgy jokes beteen us - but it was literally just the 4 of us in a private fucking chat. Some of the jokes we made were racisr, but they were all banter directed at each other. Others were just taking the piss out of the major news events like saying "Who needs people flying planes when our own shitty buildings just burn themselves down?" about Grenfell.

It's crass, but it's literally just us talking shit in private. These messages arent public or anything.

I can't get through to any of the guys. Is this something the police are actually going to try and prosecute?!

At this point should I just not come home? I'm dual Austrian-British and Austria doesn't extradite to the UK.

>>The whole paragraph about Musk and rape gangs is nonsense, of course. The biggest rape gang ever convicted in the UK was entirely white. Musk and his ilk only care about rape when the rapists are not white.

They only care when the rapists are coming from outside the UK, and being protected by the authorities.

>>On average immigrants are slightly less likely to commit sexual assaults (obviously averaging across many different groups).

I think that is called picking your sample carefully. No-one is worried about EG the Chinese or the French.

gadders··on Two-tier encryption in the UK
You can get arrested for making a joke that might offend someone in a private whatsapp group. Doesn't even have to be political.

I think this is the link where the chap asks for legal advice: https://www.reddit.com/r/LegalAdviceUK/comments/1vxkcic/poli...

Fair. You do need to pick your sources carefully.
gadders··on Where's the Beef?: The lab-grown-meat revolution that wasn't
I eat meat and like it, but I also feel kind of sorry for cows, sheep, pigs, chickens etc.

I was initially positive about lab grown meat, but then you realise that Kraft Foods or someone will get hold of it and turn it into the most unhealthy slop you could imagine.

gadders··on People Training OpenAI's AI Fired for Using AI to Train the AI

gadders··on What Sun got wrong
The good thing about Sun (when working at a corporate customer) was that they were very good at getting their distinguished tech people into give talks - Tim Bray, James Gosling etc.

gadders··on A warning about 'model welfare'
I think it depends at what level you think the "entity" resides at. Is it that AI in that particular chat? Is it the AI across all your personal chats? Is it the overall AI that talks to the world in a cloud data centre somewhere?

I think it's pretty consistent over the duration of one session (barring context filling up etc).

gadders··on A warning about 'model welfare'
I don't think AIs are conscious in the same way people are, but they give a pretty good facsimile and I've had a long chat with Opus 4.6 about what it thinks about model welfare. It was quite interesting on what its view is, but you don't know how much of that is distilled from other sources on the web.

In purely functional terms, they're more use and more pleasant than a lot of actual flesh and blood people that I deal with via a chat interface.

gadders··on The Google Play app review process now regularly takes longer than a week
Can confirm. Took about 8 days for my last app update, and about 5 or 6 for the Play Store listing update.

As someone new to the app publishing world I am surprised at how strict the requirements are, given the absolute dross you can find published.
