g00gler··on US War Department 1945 // Army Talk Orientation Fact Sheet #64 – Fascism
This leads me to wonder, do you think free trade and ad or government subsidized everything from TVs & smartphones to Internet and cellular service to content serve to keep the lot of the working classes satisfied instead of the dignities sought by the European union members & syndicalists of yesteryear?
g00gler··on The Imminent Student-Loan Disaster
Maybe there’s some sensible common ground between Germany and the US system where everyone is required to get a general education even though a lot of people have no interest in it which also causes a lot of problems and makes it worse for everyone.

Anecdotal of course but from my own experience and from the few teachers I know now, there are so many issues with students assaulting teachers, assaulting each other, kids who can barely read, write or do math, etc.

I strongly preferred my liberal arts classes at my university but most people in them were just checking the box because they viewed the expensive ($20k+/yr in state) school as a job training program even though it isn’t that.

g00gler··on Daily marijuana use linked to increased risk of deadly head and neck cancers
I could be wrong but I think the other effects of smoking are worse for quality of life as you age and are way more common than cancer.

I knew a lot of lifelong smokers. I believe only one got lung cancer, didn’t die of it, but all that lived long enough had oxygen tanks, at least periodically, later in their lives.

g00gler··on Joe Biden stands down as Democratic candidate
I don’t vote, I’m a proud non-voter.

People frequently make this statement and I think it’s wrong at face value.

If you vote you are giving legitimacy to the beltway uniparty. If the election is “free and fair” why does voting give you the right to complain?

g00gler··on If AI chatbots are the future, I hate it
You’re both right! Nuance is important :).

This is an interesting thought, assuming a call center employee is paid $35k, total cost of employment being $70k, you could hire 14.25 employees for every million dollars.

If every Concast exec got paid a paltry $5M (lowest paid exec salary), they’d be able to hire around 975 more CS reps.

They have 13.6 million subscribers, so they’d increase the number of support reps by 0.000071691176471 per customer.

My thought was maybe they could reduce their marketing budget but it seems their business has shrunken by ~50% in the past 10 years.

g00gler··on Ask HN: Has anyone been fired for ignoring in-office mandates?
> Near as I can tell, the US is getting hit with massive manipulative propaganda BS, and a lot of people are burnt out and even having PTSD type reactions (See Complex PTSD) to other people because of it.

Read any good articles about this phenomenon?

g00gler··on Microsoft a national security threat says ex-White House cyber policy director
> I mean, isn't the possibility of any of the major cloud vendors getting 'hacked', or cryptolocked, one of the biggest threads to any country?

Right, but I think the point in this case is that Microsoft was rent seeking with the logs.

To your point, I’ve been wondering lately how much of a national security threat outsourcing, offshoring and H1B in tech poses more generally.

g00gler··on Alabama prisoners' organs vanish, and there's a whole lot of passing the buck
I’m not sure if $2,200 is a lot or a little but isn’t there some non-zero cost associated with facilitating, transporting, storing and performing the autopsies regardless of whether the examiner is paid or is a student? Eg clerical work, drivers, equipment, use of a vehicle, refrigerators, etc.
g00gler··on Whistleblower Josh Dean of Boeing supplier Spirit AeroSystems has died

g00gler··on Whistleblower Josh Dean of Boeing supplier Spirit AeroSystems has died
Just pointing out, now these guys will never be on 60 minutes or giving interviews to popular mechanics, Rogan or Lex Friedman. Whatever testimony is made available will be all that we have on the topic.
g00gler··on Dart/Flutter now has macros/metaprogramming
That’s really interesting and compelling. What’s the rest of your backend stack look like? Do you get good performance from the database drivers written in dart?
g00gler··on Stack Overflow: 79% of Developers Considering a Career Move
> There are no jobs for me; even for positions that totally align with my skills, the employers express no interest.

I often wonder who they have working there and applying that is so much better than me they won’t grant me an interview. I’ve always been a top performer so it’s really quite puzzling.

g00gler··on LinkedIn laying off nearly 700, mostly from core engineering teams
How about US developers can’t compete with offshore developers?

Average Indian earns $571/mo. Even if devs earn 2x average you’d be able to hire at least 3 for just the average SF/NYC rent a developer in the US has to pay let alone taxes, benefits, etc.

Not particularly good for the country or economy long term; is the end game to destroy the US and start over paying people here $571/mo?

g00gler··on Evolving ArangoDB's Licensing Model for a Sustainable Future
I’ve been struggling with this for a bit — I am working on something I’d like to make open source for every use except resale / selling a hosted version.

Eg, you can have a private fork you use at work. You can host it for your own use anywhere you want.

I just want to retain the exclusive rights to sell it.

So 2 questions;

Is this not open source?

What’s a palatable license if you want to be able to sell a hosted version of your product?

What about a collective approach run by the businesses in a town rather than companies that charge high fees on both ends?
g00gler··on Empty storefronts are killing neighbourhoods
I'm from the NYC Metro.

Insane pricing pushed us out initially.

Philadelphia is such a horrible place, pre-covid I was longing to go back.

COVID restrictions and now the fallout from that don't make it feel like a good idea.

Really thinking about Florida now.

g00gler··on A Twitter addict realizes she needs rehab
It’s absolutely insane and there’s really no reason for it.

Controversy with the angular team or high profile developers — why?

I’ve been off social media for years but I’d hear about it second hand from coworkers.

g00gler··on Walmart unveils low-price analog insulin amid rising diabetes drug costs
Religious schools aren’t the only use of vouchers either. There are also charter schools. Charter schools can often provide specialized programs. Montessori schools seem awesome as well.
g00gler··on What would you pay for autonomous driving? Volkswagen hopes $8.50 per hour
A future where humans are no longer able to drive will have to be a decade or more after self driving arrives. It’s impossible for everyone to replace their non self driving cars immediately.

The used car market is a $150bn industry. A quick spot check found that a 2010 Honda Civic still costs between $5k and $10k depending on mileage, etc.

By the time that self driving is required by the NHSA or whatever body requires backup cameras and the like in new cars self driving will be standard.

A $20k Subaru will come with it out of the box, no add ons, just like a backup camera today.

g00gler··on Leaked Walmart memo reveals competitive threats
> if people like shopping alongside people in their own stratum, then they have to accept that they have to pay a premium for it (i.e. shop at Whole Foods).

I agree that Walmart can be extremely unpleasant compared to a regular grocery store for many reasons.

However, I’ve found Whole Foods staff to be extremely unwelcoming unless you seem like you fit in regardless of how much money you make.

Can definitely recommend wegmans for a more upscale shopping experience (Eg fancy cheeses, meats, selection of fish) without any of that “too cool for school” factor if you’re not in an “in” group.

Edit: Trader Joe’s is also pretty cool but it reminds me a bit of Aldi.

g00gler··on Woman catches state police attaching tracker to her car, now they want it back
> Car bombs are a thing that happens, they happen thankfully quite rarely but destroying a suspicious device is probably the best general course of action.

Why would you destroy something you think is possibly a car bomb or a detonator?

Wouldn’t the best general course of action be to call the police? Possibly unless you’re a meth dealer as pointed out in a sibling comment, of course.

g00gler··on Florida will fine social media companies that bar candidates
> but if you just post about how a lot of people are saying so-and-so has a child sex dungeon and somebody ought to do something about it, that's still free speech right?

That’d be libel / defamation.

g00gler··on Amazon Sidewalk
I just got a 65” UHD sceptre brand TV with no smart features at Walmart for $329.

It’s pretty great that such a desirable feature is at the bottom of the barrel

g00gler··on Why do we buy into the 'cult' of overwork?
I definitely want to check the book out because I love playing the game but I think there is a certain amount of nuance to account for.

I work a full time job and contract for at least 25hrs/week.

In my full time job I’m paid for 40hrs but not all 40 of those are productive. I take an hour lunch, we have a bunch of meetings and social things, etc.

If you ask, I work 65+ hours per week. If we’re being honest I probably only work 40 or less between lunch, catching up with coworkers sitting in meetings not doing anything, etc.

g00gler··on Over 96% of Apple Users Have Blocked Facebook from Tracking Them
I too don’t use any ad blockers on my work computer. On my personal computer I have 4 different ad blockers and a VPN and stuff, always use private browsing windows in safari for non dev (debugging) stuff.

I only use my work computer for work and some very light and sparse HN browsing (via safari). I am signed in to chrome with my gsuite account from the company.

I feel that it doesn’t really matter if googling dev stuff or a random article is tracked, it might even be to my benefit in so far as I will be viewed as a dedicated and diligent employee thus raising my social credit score

g00gler··on Is your son a computer hacker? (2001)
I thought this was a joke too. I got a kick out of the idea of some high schooler or college freshman’s satire causing a bunch of parents to force their kids to remove flash in 2001 because its a “computer hacking tool”.

The other stuff like “you can’t remove Linux without damaging the hard drive” and that you have to send it back to the manufacturer to be replaced just seems so cheeky...

g00gler··on Regulators urge safety recall of Peloton treadmill after child dies
> Substitute the girl using the treadmill with one of the parents. The kid with the ball still gets caught, although the treadmill could get stopped sooner.

Doesn’t seem likely. His parent would either fall because the treadmill slowed down, running into him and injuring them both or they would have told them to stop it because it’s clearly dangerous
